Prayer in the Wake of the Flood by Rabbi Shai Held

Ruler of Creation, Master of the world:
Have mercy on all those who are suffering from the raging waters and the storming waves.
Have compassion on Your creatures –
Look, O Lord, and see their distress;
Listen, God, and hear their cries.

Strengthen the hands of those who would bring relief,
comfort the mourners,
Heal, please, the wounded.

Grant us wisdom and discernment to know our obligations,
and open our hearts
so that we may extend our hands to the devastated.
Bless us so that we may walk in Your ways,
“compassionate ones, children of compassionate ones.”

Grant us the will and the wisdom
to prevent further disaster and death;
Prevent plague from descending upon Your earth,
and fulfill Your words,
“Never again shall there be another flood to destroy the earth.” Amen. So may it be your will.

A Prayer in Response to Hurricane Sandy

    By Rabbi Ari Lucas

Dear God of All Space and Time,

You commanded that we dwell in sukkot to understand the fragility of our homes.

We ask that You spread Your sukkat shalom – your sheltering peace over those affected by the storm.

We read in Your Torah about the storm you brought in the time of Noah – a corrective for an earth that had become saturated with anger

We ask that You remain true to Your covenant and restore order to nature.

We call you Mashiv ha-ruah u’Morid hagashem – the One who causes the wind to blow and the rain to fall.

We ask that do so livrakhah v’lo li’klalah – for a blessing, not for a curse.

Strengthen the hands of those who seek to do Your will on this earth. Give them courage to heal the wounded and bring relief to those who are in need.

In this time of uncertainty, we ask for Your blessing, protection, and our perpetual prayer for peace for us and all those who are feeling vulnerable at this time.

    Amen.
