Aharon Varady, commentary Shmueli Gonzales) When lighting the candles for Shabbat the candles should be lit, the eyes covered and then following blessing is said. Aharon Varady, instraction, Shmueli Gonzales) The following is recited upon returning home from the synagogue in preparation for the evening meal. When Shabbat falls coincides with a festival or Chol HaMoed the following hymns are recited quietly, one begins to recite out load again with “יּוֹם הַשִּשִּי” of the Kiddush. Jacobs, instructions by Shmueli Gonzales. Alternate translations by Aharon Varady) Kiddush should preferably be made on wine, but if it is not available one may make Kiddush on bread. If not saying Kiddush on wine or grape juice, one may say over bread (where one would otherwise say the blessing for wine): הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ:‏ Bless you YHVH Eloheinu, Cosmic Majesty, who delivers bread from the Earth. This occurrence is not to be confused with the blessing over the bread before the meal which follows the Kiddush on wine. One should take the Kiddush cup with their right hand and pass it to the left hand; they should then with their left hand lower the cup into the flat and open palm of their right hand; one should then close their fingers faced upwards to hug the base of the cup. The cup should be held approximately 9 inches above the table while the entire Kiddush is recited. Those listening should respond “אָמֵן" to the blessings. Handwashing (trans. Aharon Varady, instraction, Shmueli Gonzales) All people present should wash their hands in the ritual manner; after washing one should abstain from any unnecessary talking until after the eating of the bread. (This is the author of the מודה אני, recited upon awaking in the morning.) The reason being, so there will be דברי תורה at the table, The מנהג is to say שיר המעלות and then the two פסוקים, תהלת, ואנחנו (some stop here), הודו לד' (and some say כל הנשמה) and מי ימלל. These פסוקים are discussed in the ספרי מקובלים, according to the אריז"ל. There is a question if שיר המעלות should be said during the סדר. It is not included in any of the old הגדות (maybe because in the past, it was not said on שבת). At the סדר since the whole הגדה is said - there is no need to add שיר המעלות. As a result, two different מנהגים evolved - 1) everyone said (sang) ברכת המזון together (no אמן is therefore required), or 2) one recites ברכת המזון aloud and everyone follows along silently (although people are particular to finish the ברכה before the leader to answer אמן to his ברכה, no such insistence for the הרחמןs exists). One is required to say all the הרחמןs which are printed, (both on שבת and on weekdays).
