This is Rabbi Benjamin Szold’s הגיון לב (Hegyon Lev, “Meditation of the Heart”) Israelitisches Gebetbuch für die häusliche Andacht, “second completely revised edition” by Rabbi Marcus Jastrow (1875). This work was subsequently translated into English by Benjamin Szold’s daughter, Henrietta Szold, and her manuscript used as the draft for the Jewish Ministers’ Association’s Jewish Home Prayer-Book (1887), the latter with additions by Rabbi Frederick de Sola Mendes and Rabbi Gustav Gottheil. The first edition of this prayerbook was published in 1867. The name Hegyon lev is a reference to Psalms 19:15.

Das vorliegende Büchlein in seiner jetzigen Gestalt schließt sich in Tendenz und Anlage der von Herrn Dr. H. Hochheimer und dem Unterzeichneten in Gemeinschaft mit dem Verfasser revidirten, zweiten Auflage des Dr. B. Szold’schen Gebetbuches für die öffentliche Andacht (Abodat Israel) an, und ist eine Ergänzung desselben, insofern es alles enthält, was die Haus- und Privatandacht in den verschiedenen Lagen des Lebens erfordern mag.	The present booklet in its present form follows in tendency and arrangement the second edition of Dr. B. Szold’s Prayer Book for Public Devotion (Abodat Israel), revised by Dr. H. Hochheimer and the undersigned in cooperation with the author, and is a supplement to it, insofar as it contains everything that home and private devotion may require in the various situations of life.
Das auf den ersten Seiten gegebene Tägliche Morgengebet ist für Frauen und erwachsene Kinder bestimmt und für solche Männer, denen die Muße für das, in dem Hauptgebetbuche, Seite 529 bis 564, enthaltene ausführliche Morgengebet gebricht.	The Daily Morning Prayer given on the first pages is intended for women and adult children and for those men who lack the leisure for the detailed Morning Prayer contained in the main prayer book, pages 529 to 564.
In der deutschen Bearbeitung der hebräischen Gebete konnte hier dem Grundsatze ber Wiedergabe des Inhaltes und Geistes ohne Rücksicht auf das hebräische Wort noch mehr Rücksicht geschenkt werden, als in dem Gebetbuche für die öffentliche Andacht.	In the German adaptation of the Hebrew prayers, the principle of rendering the content and spirit without regard to the Hebrew word could be given even more consideration than in the prayer book for public devotion.
In der Hagadah für Pessach ist der hebräische Theil auf ein Minimum reducirt worden, während die deutsche Betrachtung sich im Gedankengange der alten Hagadah wesentli anschließt.	In the Haggadah for Pesaḥ, the Hebrew part has been reduced to a minimum, while the German consideration essentially follows the thought process of the old Hagadah.
Wie in der ersten Auflage, sind auch in dieser die schönsten Sprüche aus Pirke-Abot (Sprüche der Väter) aufgenommen worden, da „diese nicht minder als die für die Andacht bestimmten Gebete anregend und belebend auf den religiösen Sinn im Gemüthe des Israeliten einwirken.“	As in the first edition, the most beautiful sayings from Pirqei Avot (Sayings of the Fathers) have also been included in this one, since “these have a stimulating and invigorating effect on the religious sense in the mind of the Israelite no less than the prayers intended for devotion.”
Der Anhang enthält Gebetstücke für kleine Kinder, sowohl für die tägliche Morgen- und Abendandacht als auch für religiöse und häusliche Festtage. In Bezug auf die Kinderandacht kann der Unterzeichnete nicht umhin, aus dem Vorworte seines Freundes, des Herrn Dr. B. Szold, zur ersten Auflage dieses Büchleins die folgenden schönen Worte anzuführen: „Das Gebet ift der Morgenthau, der die Blumenknospe der kindlichen Seele dem Lichtstrahle der Religion erschließt, in vem sie sich in ihrem schönsten Schmucke entfaltet.”	The appendix contains prayer pieces for young children, both for daily morning and evening devotions and for religious and domestic feast days. With regard to the children’s devotions, the undersigned cannot but quote the following beautiful words from the preface of his friend, Dr. B. Szold, to the first edition of this booklet: “Prayer is the morning dew which opens the flower bud of the child’s soul to the ray of light of religion, in which it unfolds in its most beautiful adornment.

Marcus Jastrow

Marcus Jastrow (June 5, 1829, Rogoźno – October 13, 1903) was a Polish-born American Talmudic scholar, most famously known for his authorship of the popular and comprehensive A Dictionary of the Targumim, Talmud Babli, Talmud Yerushalmi and Midrashic Literature. He was also a progressive, early reformist rabbi in America. Along with Benjamin Szold and Frederick de Sola Mendes, Marcus Jastrow was characterized by Jewish historian Jacob Rader Marcus as being on the right-wing of early American Reform. His translation of Rabbi Benjamin Szold's prayerbook into English offered a more traditional alternative to the Minhag America prayerbook of Isaac M. Wise. He opposed the 1885 Pittsburgh Platform, but consented for an organ to be installed in his Rodeph Shalom synagogue in Philadelphia.

Benjamin Szold

Benjamin Szold (November 15, 1829 in Nemeskürt, Nyitra County, Kingdom of Hungary, (today Slovakia) – July 31, 1902 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia) was an American rabbi and scholar. Szold studied under Rabbis Jacob Fischer of Shalgaw, Wolf Kollin of Werbau, and Benjamin Wolf at the Pressburg Yeshiva, and received the rabbinical authorization from Judah Assod of Bur and Simon Sidon of Tyrnau. In 1848, he studied in Vienna, but when the revolution of that year broke out he went to Pressburg. From 1849 to 1855 he tutored in private families in Hungary, and in the latter year entered the University of Breslau, where he remained until 1858. While a student he officiated during the holy days at Brieg, Silesia (1857), and at Stockholm, Sweden (1858). In 1859, he accepted a call from the Temple Oheb Shalom (Baltimore, Maryland) in whose service he remained until his death, first as rabbi and later (after 1892) as rabbi emeritus. Under his guidance it grew rapidly, and, actuated by his example, it became widely known for its strict observance of Shabbat. Before Szold's arrival the congregation had adopted for use in its Shabbat service the Minhag America, (which was the new prayer-book written by Isaac Meyer Wise, a Reform rabbi) on the great fall holy days it reverted to the Minhag Ashkenaz; after much discussion with his congregation Szold introduced a new prayer-book, Abodat Yisrael, which closely followed traditional lines.
