Arranged and translated by Yosef Naḥmuli, סדר תפלות֑֭דפשמ֖ Καθημεριναι Προσευχαι (“Daily Prayers,” 1885), is a Greek-Hebrew siddur for weekdays and festivals, nusaḥ sefaradi (minhag Corfu). Besides being the first Greek translation of this siddur, this translation offers, we believe, the first rabbinic Jewish translation of texts from the Hebrew Bible in Greek (otherwise only available via the Septuagint).

Making digital images of these works available is the first step in our process of making the entire prayerbook, both Hebrew liturgy and Greek translation, machine-readable (copy-pastable and searchable). We are grateful to the Klau Library of Hebrew Union College of making this Public Domain work available to us for digitization from their copy on microfilm.

Κατὰ τὴν χαρμόσυνον ἡμέραν τῶν γενεθλίων τῆς Ὑμετέρας Ὑψηλότητος, καθ’ ἣν ὁ Παντοδύναμος ἐξεπλήρου τὰς εὐχὰς τόσον ἑκατομμυρίων ψυχῶν, ἐτελειοποιεῖτο ἡ ἐκτύπωσις πονηματίου μου ἐπιγραφομένου Ἑβδομὰς τῶν παίδων, ὅπερ σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις περιεῖχε σύντομον ἱστορίαν τοῦ Ἑλληνικοῦ ἔθνους μέχρι τῶν αἰσίων Γάμων τῶν Σεπτῶν Βασιλέων καὶ Ὑμῶν Γονέων.	On the joyous day of Your Highness’s birthday, on which the Almighty fulfilled the prayers of so many millions of souls, the printing of my work entitled The Seven Days of the Children was completed, which, along with the others, contained a brief history of the Greek nation up to the auspicious Wedding of the Holy Kings and Your Parents.
Τὸ σπουδαῖον διὰ τὸν Ἑλληνισμὸν τοῦτο συμβὰν, κατεχώρισα, ὡς εἰκὸς, ἐν τῷ πονηματίῳ μου ἐκείνῳ, ὅπερ καὶ ἀφιέρωσα τῇ Ὑμετέρᾳ Ὑψηλότητι, προηγουμένης ἀδείας τῶν Σεπτῶν Βασιλέων, οἵτινες, καί τοι εὐτελεστάτου τοῦ ἔργου μου, οὐχ ἧττον εὐμενῶς ἀπεδέχθησαν αὐτὸ, ἀποβλέποντες εἰς τὸ ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐμπνεόμενον αἴσθημα τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ ἀφοσιώσεως πρός τε τὴν πατρίδα καὶ τὴν Βασιλικὴν Οἰκογένειαν.	This event, which was of great significance for Hellenism, I have, as is fitting, in that treatise of mine, which I also dedicated to Your Highness, with the prior permission of the Most Holy Kings, who, despite the humble nature of my work, accepted it no less graciously, recognizing the sentiment of love and devotion inspired by it toward both the homeland and the Royal Family.
Ἀκολουθῶν δὲ νὰ καταγίνωμαι ὅπως, κατὰ τὰς ἀσθενεῖς μου δυνάμεις, διαδίδω μεταξὺ τῶν ὁμοθρήσκων μου τὴν γνῶσιν τῆς ἡδυφώνου τῶν Ἑλλήνων γλώσσης, τοῦ κυριωτέρου τούτου στοιχείου τῆς Ἐθνότητος, ἐπεχείρισα τὴν ἑλληνικὴν μετάφρασιν τῶν Ἰσραηλιτικῶν Καθημερινῶν Προσευχῶν, ἃς καὶ ἐξετύπωσα μετὰ τοῦ ἑβραϊκοῦ κειμένου.	I therefore strive, to the best of my feeble abilities, spread among my fellow believers the knowledge of the melodious Greek language, this most essential element of our national identity, I undertook the Greek translation of the Israelite Daily Prayers, which I also published alongside the Hebrew text.
Τὸ πόνημα τοῦτο εἰς Ὑμᾶς, Ὑψηλότατε, ὅστις θείᾳ συνάρσει, μετὰ τὴν πολυχρόνιον καὶ ἔνδοξον Βασιλείαν τοῦ Σ. Ὑμῶν Πατρὸς καὶ δημοφιλοῦς Βασιλέως ἡμῶν ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΥ τοῦ Α΄, ὀφείλετε νὰ ἀναβῆτε τὸν Ἑλληνικὸν Θρόνον, εἰς Ὑμᾶς, λαβὼν τὴν Ἀνωτέραν ἄδειαν, ἀνατίθημι, ἐπανορθόνων οὕτω κατά τι τὸ εὐτελὲς τοῦ πρώτου Ὑμῖν ἀφιερωθέντος πονηματίου μου.	This work is dedicated to You, Your Highness, who, by divine providence, following the long and glorious reign of Your Your Father and our beloved King GEORGE Ⅰ, you are now called upon to ascend the Greek Throne; having having received the highest permission, I hereby dedicate this to you, thereby somewhat making amends for the mediocrity of my first work dedicated to you.
Ἱκετεύω ἑπομένως τὴν Ὑμετέραν Υψηλότητα, ἵνα εὐδοκήσῃ ν’ ἀποδεχθῇ αὐτὸ εὐμενῶς.	I therefore implore Your Highness to graciously accept this.

Yosef Naḥmuli

Yosef (Giuseppe) Naḥmuli (also, Nachmuli, Nakamuli; 1821-1886) was a journalist, educator, and lawyer. A leading figure of the Sepharadi community of Corfu, Greece, he was a member of the committee of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. He published several books for teaching languages (Greek, Italian and French) to young Sephardim and in 1861 founded the bilingual newspaper, Israelite Chronica / Cronaca Israelite in Greek and Italian, which was published until 1863.

Aharon N. Varady (digital imaging and document preparation)

Aharon Varady, founding director of the Open Siddur Project, is a copyright researcher and amateur book scanner. He prepares digital images and new digital editions of prayer books and related works in the Public Domain in order to make their constituent parts (prayers, translations, annotations, etc.) publicly accessible for collaborative transcription by project volunteers.
