ִתְּפִלָּתֵינוּ: סִדּוּר לְכׇל הַשָּׁנָה Tefilaténu: Siddur l’Khol haShanah (1932) a/k/a סִדּוּר שִׁילֹֹה is an everyday (kol-bo) nusaḥ Ashkenaz siddur by Ẓevi Scharfstein (1884-1972). The siddur has been reprinted many times over the last century and is ubiquitous in Hebrew Day Schools in the United States as a child’s first siddur. Unlike any others to our knowledge, it contains line numbers — a pedagogical feature for classroom use. That is contains no accompanying translation may be considered a feature, rather than a problem, for educators who intend their students to become more familiar with the source liturgy than any one possible translation.

The United Synagogue of America (now knows as the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism) compiled this Hebrew-English maḥzor for the three regalim (pilgrimage festivals: Pesaḥ, Shavuot, and Sukkot with Shmini Atseret.) Rabbi Dr. Louis Ginzburg was among the editors and writers who helped to compile the maḥzor.

📖 Mediæval Hebrew Minstrelsy: Songs for the Bride Queen’s Feast, by Herbert Loewe (1926)

Mediæval Hebrew Minstrelsy: Songs for the Bride Queen’s Feast (1926), an anthology of Sabbath table songs with rhymed English translations by the compiler, Herbert Loewe as well as others identified in his “Introduction.” The sixteen zemirot included have commentaries based on those provided by Dr. Leo Hirschfeld in his בזמרות נריע לו Die häuslichen Sabbathgesänge für Freitag⸗Abend, Sabbath⸗Tag und Sabbath⸗Ausgang (1898). Musical notation for the zemirot melodies were prepared, and a chapter on the music was written, by Rose L. Henriques. There are also delightful illustrations throughout by Beatrice Hirschfeld. Chief Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz provided the foreword.

Jewish Science and Health: Textbook of Jewish Science (1925) presents the philosophy and practice of Rabbi Morris Lichtenstein’s “Jewish Science movement” (an uncoordinated response to the then popular Christian Science movement), which he also referred to as “Applied Judaism.” Rabbi Lichtenstein emphasized the efficacy of visualization in the practice of prayer, and lacking that, the use of affirmations.

This is a collection of forty prayers and twelve short essays/addresses in English by Rabbi Abraham Cronbach, Prayers of the Jewish Advance (1924). The work contains two opening prayers and one closing prayer (i.e., the “Prayers of the Jewish Advance”), prayers for ten days on the festival calendar including the Sabbath, a full confirmation service with seven prayers, and twenty miscellaneous prayers. The full program and notes to the Confirmation Service append the work.

📖 סדר תפלה בקצרה | La Tefila du Soldat, an abridged bilingual Hebrew-French prayerbook for Jewish soldiers compiled by Rabbi Maurice Liber (Consistoire central israelíte de France 1914/1939)

La Tefila du Soldat is an abridged bilingual Hebrew-French prayerbook for French-Jewish soldiers prepared in 1939 by Rabbi Maurice Liber, the former interim Chief Rabbi of France under Rabbi Israël Lévi (from 1934-1939). In addition to abridged liturgy, the prayerbook also contains a curated selection of teḥinot in vernacular French, and psalms in French translation. Rabbi Isaie Schwartz, appointed chief rabbi in 1939, wrote the introductory letter to Jewish soldiers at the start of the French section of the siddur. In it, he notes the prayerbook is, essential, a copy of one offered to French-Jewish soldiers by the Consistoire central israelíte de France during World War Ⅰ.
