📖 The Children’s Psalm-Book, by Julia M. Cohen (1907)

This is Julia M. Cohen’s The children’s Psalm-book, a selection of Psalms with explanatory comments, together with a prayer-book for home use in Jewish families (1907). The compilation contains a pedagogical essay providing parents guidance for reading the psalms, as well as her translations and commentary on the selected psalms. The prayer-book includes posthumously published translations of Yigdal and Adon Olam by Cohen’s father, Jacob Waley (1818-1873), co-founder of the United Synagogue.

The Children’s Service for Use in Religious Schools (1902) is Rabbi J. Leonard Levy’s prayerbook compiled for the religious school at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, a Reform movement synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The siddur is comprised of four children’s services and twenty supplemental services for special days on the calendar. A hymnal comprises a third section. This is the second revised edition of the prayerbook, printed in 1904, containing additional services and hymns.

Meditation of the Heart: A Book of Private Devotion for Young and Old (1900) is a collection of teḥinot in English, selected, arranged, and written by Annie Josephine Levi. The introduction was written by the Rabbi Gustav Gottheil. We know very little else about Levi save that she contributed short stories, poems, and essays to periodicals and was active from 1895-1905. 📖 בזמרות נריע לו | Die häuslichen Sabbathgesänge für Freitag⸗Abend, Sabbath⸗Tag und Sabbath⸗Ausgang, by Dr. Leo Jehudah Hirschfeld (1898)

Birkonim (bentschers) with table songs sung on the Sabbath with accompanying translations are now commonplace, but they not always were. The first major collection with accompanying translations was Dr. Leo Hirschfeld’s בזמרות נריע לו Die häuslichen Sabbathgesänge für Freitag⸗Abend, Sabbath⸗Tag und Sabbath⸗Ausgang (1898), an anthology of Sabbath table songs organized according to their traditional feast (Sabbath night, day, and Sabbath afternoon) in the Ashkenazi tradition.

Alice Lucas’s The Jewish Year: A Collection of Devotional Poems for Sabbaths and Holidays throughout the Year (1898) is a collection of 75 adapted English translations of piyyutim (including 12 original works by Lucas) intended “for devotion,” i.e., prayer. The collection expanded on an earlier publication of Lucas, Songs of Zion (1894). This work contains all but three of the works published in Songs of Zion.

Prayers for Jewish Working Girls (1895) is a collection of prayers in vernacular English by Lilian Helen Montagu (1873-1963). The prayerbook was dedicated to the members of the West Central Girls’ Club, founded in 1893 by Lilian and co-led by her and her sister Marian Montagu.

Alice Lucas’s Songs of Zion by Hebrew Singers of Mediæval Times (1894) is a collection of twenty-five adapted English translations, mainly of piyyutim, all intended “for devotion,” i.e., prayer. The collection was expanded upon in a follow-up publication of Lucas, The Jewish Year (1898).

📖 סדר תפלות כל השנה (אשכנז)‏ | The Authorised Daily Prayer Book of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire, translated and arranged by Rabbi Simeon Singer (1890)

Before the Koren-Sacks Siddur (2009), there was the Authorised Daily Prayer Book first published in 1890 and used by Jews throughout the British Empire, while there was a British Empire. It was originally published under the authorization of Great Britain’s first Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler with a Hebrew liturgy based on Isaac Seligman Baer’s Seder Avodat Yisroel (1868). The translation by Rabbi Simeon Singer (1846-1906) was the most extensive English translation of the Siddur ever published, and for this reason most editions are simply referred colloquially as The Singer Siddur. The Standard Prayer Book, published by Bloch in 1915, was an American reprint of The Authorized Daily Prayer Book.
