	I pledge allegiance to the Earth, one planet indivisible, and to the universe in which she lives, one system under God with freedom and fulfillment for the highest life and consciousness of all.

This earth pledge by Maryann Shores was included in her published address of the first plenary session of Humanity’s Quest for Unity: a United Nations… colloquium in honour of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “proceedings of a colloquium held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, in conjunction with the opening of the 38th meeting of the [UN] General Assembly [26 Sepetember 1983]” (ed. by Leo Zonneveld, 1985), pp. 78-84. The pledge appears on page 78 of “A Positive Approach to Acceptable Peace: the Right Use of Human Energy.” Shores was a United Church of Christ peace activist and longtime student of the visionary Catholic Jesuit theologian, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955). The colloquium was organized by the University for Peace, and presided by Dr. Rodrigo Carazo, President of Council of the University of Peace. The Univerist for Peace was created by the United Nations General Assemby on 5 December 1980 with its stated goal being “to furnish the necessary conditions for the achievement of world peace through research, education, dissemination and free inquiry.”

Maryann Shores

Maryann Shores (1922-2012), born in in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, was a longtime student of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and produced a variety of papers and poetry on Teilhardian thought. She was a contributor to the International Teilhard Compendium, a member of the Nuclear Freeze Education Committee, and a member of the United Church of Christ Peace Task Force, Minnesota.
