מִי שֶׁבֵּירַךְ אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב
מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן
וְדָוִד וּשְׁלֹמֹה׃
הוּא יְבָרֵךְ אֶת כׇּל־הַקְּהִלּוֹת הַקְּדוֹשׁוֹת וְהַטְּהוֹרוֹת,
גְּדוֹלִים וּקְטַנִּים
הֵם וּבְנֵיהֶם
וּנְשֵׁיהֶם וְתַלְמִידֵיהֶם
וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁר לָהֶם׃

May the One who blessed our ancestors,
Avraham, Yitsḥaq, and Yaaqov,
Mosheh and Aharon,
David and Shlomo;
bless all the holy and pure congregations,
both great and small;
they, their children,
wives, disciples,
and all belonging to them.

מַלְכָּא דְעָֽלְמָא הוּא יְבָרֵךְ יַתְהוֹן
וִיזַכֶּה יַתְהוֹן
וְיִשְּׁמַע בְּקָל צְלֽוֹתְהוֹן
וִיקַיֵּם בָּהֶם מִקְרָא שֶׁכָּתוּב
יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵכֶם
יֹסֵף עֲלֵיכֶם כָּכֶם אֶלֶף פְּעָמִים
וִיבָרֵךְ אֶתְכֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לָכֶם (דברים א:יא)
(בשרת ימי תשובה אומרים:
וְיִכְתְּבֵם בְּסֵפֶר חַיִּים טוֹבִים)
וְכֵן יְהִי רָצוֹן
וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן׃

May the supreme King of the universe, bless them
and purify them;
and hearken to the voice of their supplication:
so that he may fulfil in them, what is written,
[that] “YHVH, eloah of your ancestors
make you a thousand times as many more as you are,
and bless you as he has promised you.” (Deuteronomy 1:11)

And may Hashem write them in the book of life.)

This is the mi sheberakh prayer, the Brakhah la’Qehilot, (Blessing for All the Jewish Congregations [worldwide]) as found in Seder haTefilot: The Order of the Daily Prayers in Hebrew and English According to the Custom of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews (1789, 2nd ed. 1810) p. 130v-131r. I have re-Hebraized names, replaced archaisms, and made other minor edits to the translation. –Aharon Varady

David Levi (translation)

David Levi, (1742-1801), a self-taught English Jew, provided both Jews and Christians with basic materials about Judaism in English. Since the English Jewish community of the time knew little or no Hebrew, Levi translated the Sefaradi and Ashkenazi prayer books, and produced expositions and translations of much Jewish lore about ritual and practice. His texts were used by Jewish and Christian writers well into the 19th century.

This is an artist's impression of supernova 1993J, an exploding star in the galaxy M81 whose light reached us 21 years ago. The supernova originated in a double-star system where one member was a massive star that exploded after siphoning most of its hydrogen envelope to its companion star. After two decades, astronomers have at last identified the blue helium-burning companion star, seen at the center of the expanding nebula of debris from the supernova. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope identified the ultraviolet glow of the surviving companion embedded in the fading glow of the supernova.
