הַנּוֹתֵן תְּשׁוּעָה לַמְּלָכִים וּמֶמְשָׁלָה לַנְּסִיכִים [מַלְכוּתְךָ וּמֶמְשֶׁלְתְּךָ כָּל־עוֹלָמִים] הַפּוֹצֶה אֶת דָּוִד עַבְדּוֹ מֵחֶרֶב רָעָה הַנּוֹתֵן בַּיַם דֶרֶךְ וּבְמַיִם עַזִּים נְתִיבָה	He that sends deliverance to Kings, and gives Dominion to Princes, whose Kingdom and Dominion is everlasting; He that delivered David his servant from the perilous sword,^[1] Find 1 Chronicles 21:15. And he who made a way through the Red Sea,^[2] i.e., for the Israelites through the Sea of Reeds. and paths through the River Jordan:^[3] again, for the Israelites, through the River Jordan.
הוּא יְבָרֵךְ וְיִשְׁמוֹר וְיַעֲזוֹר וִיגַדֵּל וִינַשֵּׂא לְמַֽעְלָה לְמַֽעְלָה לַאֲדוֹנֵנוּ	He himself bless, preserve, assist, make great, and more and more exalt our Gracious Lord CHARLES the II. King and Protector of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland,
הַמֶּלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְלָכִים בְּרַחֲמָיו יִשְׁמְרֶהוּ וִיחַיֵיהוּ וּמִכָּל צָרָה וָנֶזֶק יַצִילֵהוּ׃	the King of kings by his Merciful Benevolence preserve, vivify, and deliver him from all trouble and danger.
מֶֽלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְלָכִים יָרִוּם וְיַגְבִּיהַ כּוֹכַב מַעֲרַכְתָּוֹ וְיַאֲרִיךְ יָמִים עַל מַמְלָכְתּוֹ׃	The King of kings, increase and heighten the Star of his Constellation, to prolong his days over his glorious Kingdom.
מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְלָכִים יִתֵּן בְּלבּוֹ וּבְּלֵב כָּל יוֹעֲצַיו וְשָׂרָיו רַחֲמָנוּת לַעֲשׂוֹת טוֹבָה עִמָּנוּ וְעִם כָּל יִשְּׂרָאֵל אַחֵינוּ אָמֵן׃	The King of kings put it into his heart, and into the hearts of his Nobles and Princes, to use benign clemency towards Us, and to the Israel of God, our brethren under his Dominion: Amen.

Rabbi Jacob Judah Leon’s Prayer for King Charles II, from his 1675 booklet, A relation of the most memorable thinges in the Tabernacle and the Temple, was the first Jewish prayer in English for an English king (Mocatta Library, University College London). In presenting this transcription, I have reconstructed the Hebrew source from which the English translation was derived, and I have replaced archaic with contemporary spelling. –Aharon Varady

Rabbi Jacob Jehudah Leão (translation)

Jacob Judah Leaõ, or Leon, (Templo) was born 1603 in Buarcos, Portugal, and died in 1675 in Holland. He was a Dutch ḥakham, teacher, rabbi, translator of the Psalms, draughtsman, and expert on heraldry, of Spanish-Portuguese descent. He became famous for his models of the Tabernacle of Moses and the Temple of Solomon, which received Royal Patronage and approval and which were widely exhibited for many years in Europe and Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries.
