Father in heaven, who dwells invisibly and benevolently in the spheres of light, who sets the princes of the earth on their thrones and bestows upon them the crown of power and authority, so that the king may reign in accordance with your law, and princes and sovereigns may govern the children of your earth according to your statutes and ordinances — hear us as we lift up our voices to you in prayer from our humble hearts. Like pious, grateful, and faithful children for the welfare of their careful, tender father, we devoutly fold our hands and pray before you, Most High, for the salvation of our pious, devoted and all-loving father of the country, whom you have given us as monarch in your infinite grace, who bases his throne on justice and righteousness, to whom insight, wisdom and the fear of God shine as pearls in his glorious crown, and to whom kindness of heart, nobleness and love of mankind serve as the guiding stars of his pious rule. |
O wahre, schütze, segne und erhebe ihn, Allvater! Segne und erhebe stets mehr den Glanz seiner Herrscherwürde, seines Ruhmes und seiner Majestät! Gib langes ungefährdetes Leben ihm, Herr! Auf daß er ernte die Früchte seiner reichen Tugendsaat und genieße seiner frommen Thaten Lohn. Auf daß sein gerechtes, liebevolles Herrscherwalten noch lange heilbringend uns erquicke, „wie Regen auf abgemähtes Land, wie segenreiche Wässerung den lechzenden Boden erfrischet, und Unschuld und Gerechtigkeit in seinen Tagen blühen, und endloser Friede seine Völkerschaften beglücke.“ (Ps. 72, 6-17) Laß ihn deiner Gottesmacht sich erfreuen und frohlocken deines Heiles, Herr, auf daß er beuge den Trotz und die Willkür, die Böswilligkeit, die Entartung und die Widersetzlichkeit. „Gib ihm, was sein Herz verlangt, und die Regung seiner Sehnsucht versage ihm nicht.“ (Ps. 21, 2) Laß den Gottvertrauenden festbestehen für und für, und nimmer ihn wanken, Allerhöchster, durch deine Huld. Lasse ihn immerfort prangen als strahlendes Vorbild der Tugend und Gerechtigkeit auf dem Throne seiner Väter, auf daß die beglückten Völker ihn preisen, und sein Nachruhm der Sonne gleich in die Nachwelt strahle. |
O truly, protect, bless and exalt him, All-Father! Bless and raise ever more the splendor of his rulership, his glory and his majesty! Give him a long and safe life, Lord! That he may reap the fruits of his rich seed of virtue and enjoy the reward of his pious deeds. That his righteous, loving rule may long continue to refresh us with salvation, “as rain upon the mown land, as blessed watering refreshes the thirsty ground, and innocence and righteousness flourish in his days, and endless peace make his peoples happy.”[2] Cf. Let him rejoice in your God-power, and exult in your salvation, O Lord, that he may subdue defiance and willfulness, malice, degeneracy, and rebelliousness. “Give him what his heart desires, and the stirring of his desire fail him not.” (Psalms 21:2) Let him who trusts in God stand firm for ever and ever, and never let him waver, Most High, through your grace. Let him always shine as a shining example of virtue and righteousness on the throne of his fathers, so that the delighted peoples may praise him, and his posthumous fame may shine like the sun into posterity. |

“Gebet für den Landesfürsten” was written by Max Emanuel Stern and published in his anthology of teḥinot Die fromme Zionstochter: Andachtsbuch für Israels Frauen und Mädchen… (1841), pp. 32-35. In its 1846 printing, the prayer is found on pp. 34-36.
