May the One who creates all of existence from nothingness;
whom the ear cannot grasp nor the eye perceive;
sublime and beyond all sight;
whose kavod fills the universe;
Rock, whose work is righteous and perfect;
who enlightens the eyes of those who hope in Them —
Bring them out of deadly darkness into bright light
and grant Their grace and justice to those who recognize Them.
Puisse Le Dieu tout-puissant, qui crée l’existant du néant;
Que l’ouïe ne peut saisir ni la vue apercevoir;
Sublime, et qui échappe à tout regard;
Dont la gloire emplit l’univers;
Roc, dont l’œuvre est droite et parfaite;
Formidable in praise, author of wonders,
They bring prisoners out of dungeons.
They reveal secrets deeper than the ocean,
and brings back those who are isolated, whose location no one knows.
They free prisoners from their chains
And gently lead the rest of Their flock.
Keep in your wineskin the tears of the oppressed,
chained with irons and shackles,
held captive and locked up in detention centers,
plunged into darkness, deprived of sun and moon,
starved, thirsty, tortured, tormented;
Their oppressors relentlessly inflict pain, distress, and torment upon them.
Affamés, assoiffés, torturés, tourmentés;
El great, powerful, and awesome,
You who answer those who call upon you in times of distress,
hear the prayer and groaning of the captives of your people, the house of Yisrael.
Open heaven to their prayer and receive their cry favorably.
Ouvre le ciel à leur prière et accueille favorablement leur cri;
Remove their yoke and break their chains.
May the wounded be set free as doves fly out of their crevices!
Shatter the doors of their prison.
For the covenant sealed with blood, free the captives from the abyss.
Have mercy on the captives of your people, taken as spoil.
Announce to the prisoners their release.
Strengthen once again those whose hope has been stolen.
They were faithful to your commandments—their place is in your dwelling.
Aie pitié des captifs de Ton peuple, pris en butin;
Annonce aux prisonniers leur libération.
Fortifie de nouveau ceux dont a été ravie l’espérance;
Among them and with them,
may you free, untie, save, and deliver —
[recite Name of Captive(s)] with all the captives of your people, the house of Yisrael.
El, Av ha-Raḥaman,
King in whom we place our trust,
Bring them out of their prison
and free them from their captivity.
Ô Dieu, Père miséricordieux,
Roi en qui nous plaçons notre confiance,
Fais-les sortir de leur geôle
et libère-les de leur captivité.
Save them and deliver them from all distress, affliction, and suffering —
men and women, children, young and old, all together —
For you are their Rock, their Deliverer, and their Redeemer.
May they give thanks to Hashem for Their goodness and the wonders They do for humanity.

May the One who blessed Avraham, Yitsḥaq, and Yaaqov,
and all the righteous of the world,
May the One who answered Yosef in prison,
and who answered Yonah in the belly of the fish,
and who brought Ḥananiah, Mishael, and Azaryah out of the fiery furnace,
and Daniel out of the lions’ den,
bring out and deliver [recite Name of Captive(s)]
with all the captives of Their people Yisrael.

This prayer for captives, containing a piyyut followed by meaningful verses and a mi sheberakh, was transcribed by Dr. Yehoshua Granat (יהושע גרנט) from a manuscript produced in late medieval France, Ms. Barginsky 206 (fol. 67b) in the Braginsky Collection in Zurich, Switzerland, under the title “יש מקומות שנהגו לבקש רחמים על האסור בבית האסורים כדרך הזה” (“There are places where it was customary to ask for mercy for the imprisoned in this way”). This transcription was published online in an article on Haaretz, “שמע נא לתפילת אסירי עמך” on 4 March 2025. (A full copy of the article as published in print is available from Dr. Granat’s academia.edu account.) We are extremely grateful to Dr. Granat for sharing the verses omitted in the Haaretz article linked above. Dr. Granat notes that he intends a fuller study of the prayer, complete with annotation, to be published at a future date.

The English translation I have made here relies partially on the French translation made by Ephraïm Kahn, published along side the Hebrew in a slightly later article by Dr. Granat, “פיוט תחינה בלתי מוכר להצלת שבויים מכלאם | Piyyout de supplication inconnu pour la délivrance des captifs de leur geôle” on 7 April 2025. Many thanks to Shoshana Michael Zucker for informing us of the article in Haaretz. –Aharon Varady
