Please, let my soul be precious in your eyes, YHVH my elo’ah and elo’ah of my fathers. Let your compassion prevail over your attribute of justice. Let your heart be stirred with compassion for my soul is so poor and miserable. My soul is so hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, a soul embittered, trapped in chains of wretchedness and iron, in tens of thousands of nets and traps, like birds trapped in a snare.[5] An allusion to the gilgul hanefesh, the transmigrated soul. Merciful One! Merciful One who sees the shame of the humiliated, please look and see “the tears of the oppressed”[6] Ecclesiastes 4:1 partial who scream out, weep, cry and sigh, “and on the side of their oppressors there is power, and they have no comforter.”[7] Ecclesiastes 4:1 partial How they weep, and their tears are on their cheeks. Truly compassionate One: don’t hide your face from their cry and don’t shut your ear to their scream, and don’t close your eyes to their tears! |

Please, YHVH, save my soul from all bodily cravings and evil traits. Great Compassionate One, help and save with your genuine compassion my crushed soul and give her power and strength from you, YHVH, my elo’ah and elo’ah of my fathers, so that she’ll be able to conquer the body. Let my soul overcome my body, let my form hold sway over my substance, until I totally subdue and break the physicality of my body so as to reveal the radiance of my soul and holy form and draw upon myself the tselem Elohim, the likeness in which I was patterned.[15] Cf. Genesis 1:27 Grant me the light of holy intellect — wisdom, understanding and knowledge — and help me rid myself of every kind of materialistic folly and gross physicality. Bring me from gloom to radiance, from darkness to great light, from the folly and darkness of gross physicality to the radiant wisdom of the holy soul. |

Give me my portion in your Torah. Let me learn and meditate on your Torah and devote myself to your service day and night. Put it into my heart to be wise and understanding, to hear, learn and teach, observe, practice and fulfil all the words of your Torah with love. Illumine my eyes in your Torah and attach my heart to your mitsvot. |
וְתַפְרִישֵׁנִי וְתַבְדִּילֵנִי מִן הַתּוֹעִים בְּחָכְמוֹת חִיצוֹנִיּוֹת וְתָגֵן בַּעֲדִי וּבְעַד זַרְעִי תָמִיד, וּבְעַד כׇּל עַמְּךָ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁלֹּא נַעֲסֹק לְעוֹלָם בְּשׁוּם חָכְמָה חִיצוֹנָה כְלָל וְלֹא נָשִׂים עַיִן וְלֹא נִלְמַד בְּשׁוּם סֵפֶר מִסִּפְרֵי הַחֲקִירוֹת כְּלָל, הֵן בְּסִפְרֵי חֲקִירוֹת שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל, הֵן בְּסִפְרֵי חֲקִירוֹת שֶׁל הָעֲכּוּ״ם וְתַעֲזֹר לָנוּ שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּנֵס בְּדַעְתֵּנוּ וּמַחֲשַׁבְתֵּנוּ שׁוּם חֲקִירָה מֵחֲקִירוֹתֵיהֶם, וְלֹא שׁוּם סְבָרָה וְדֵעָה מִסְּבָרוֹתֵיהֶם וְדֵעוֹתֵיהֶם הַזָּרוֹת וְהַמָּרוֹת, הַצָּדִים בְּרִשְׁתָּם נְפָשׁוֹת יְקָרוֹת. |
Keep me well away from those who have strayed into the realm of extraneous wisdom. Protect me, my children and descendants and all the house of Yisra’el from pursuing such ideas. Let us never involve ourselves with any extraneous wisdom at all, nor gaze at women nor ever study any books of philosophical inquiry at all, whether a philosophical work written by a Yisra’el (Jew) or those written by non-Jews. Help not to let enter our thoughts any of these philosopher’s philosophies. Don’t let any of their strange and bitter ideas or arguments enter our minds and thoughts — such ideas have the power to trap precious souls in their net. |
אֲשֶׁר בֶּאֱמֶת כׇּל חָכְמוֹתֵיהֶם הַחִיצוֹנִיּוֹת הֵם רַק כְּסִילוּת וְסִכְלוּת וּשְׁטוּת וָהֶבֶל גָּמוּר בֶּאֱמֶת וְנִמְשָׁכִים רַק מִכְּסִילוּת וְחֶשְׁכַת חָמְרִיּוּת הַגּוּף, וּמִתַּאֲוֹתֵיהֶם וּמִדּוֹתֵיהֶם הָרָעוֹת אֲשֶׁר מֵחֲמַת תֹּקֶף הִתְגַּבְּרוּת תַּאֲוֹת גּוּפָם וְחָמְרָם הֶעָב וְהַמְגֻשָּׁם וְהַמְזהָם וְהַמְשֻׁקָּץ מְאֹד מְאֹד בְּתַכְלִית הַזֻהֲמָה וְהַטִּנּוּף וְהַמִּאוּס, מִשָּׁם נִתְעַכֵּר וְנִתְקַלְקֵל וְנִשְׁחַת דַּעְתָּם וְלִבָּם הֶעָרֵל, עַד שֶׁנִּתְעוּ וְנָבוֹכוּ מִדֵּעָה לְדֵעָה וּמִסְּבָרָא לִסְבָרָא, עַד שֶׁבָּאוּ לִידֵי טָעוּת וּשְׁטוּת חָכְמוֹתֵיהֶם הַחִיצוֹנִיּוֹת. |
The truth is that all their ideas are sheer folly, stupidity, nonsense and emptiness. They are rooted in the folly and darkness of the physicality of their bodies and their evil desires and traits. They’ve been so overcome by bodily cravings and the filth and corruption of gross materialism that their minds and uncircumcized hearts have been totally ruined. They’ve gone astray from one idea to the next, with one argument after another, ending up with the false and foolish theories they espouse. |
רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם רַחֵם עָלֵינוּ וְעַל זַרְעֵנוּ וְעַל פְּלֵטָתֵנוּ, אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁאַרְנוּ כַּתֹּרֶן בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר בְּאֵין עוֹזֵר וְסוֹמֵךְ, וְאֵין מִי שֶׁיַּעֲמֹד בַּעֲדֵנוּ הַצֵּל הַצֵּל |
Master of the Cosmos, have pity on us and on our children and our remnant. We’re left like a solitary mast on top of a mountain with no one to help and support us. We have no one to stand up for us. Save us! Save us! |
וְהוֹשִׁיעָה וּמַלֵּט אוֹתָנוּ וְאֶת זַרְעֵינוּ בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים מִכׇּל מִינֵי חָכְמוֹת חִיצוֹנִיּוֹת שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה לָנוּ שׁוּם חֵלֶק וְעֵסֶק בָּהֶם וְתִהְיֶה יָדֵנוּ וְשִׂכְלֵנוּ וְלִבֵּנוּ מְסֻלֶּקֶת מֵהֶם כִּי לֹא בְאֵלֶּה חֶלְקֵנוּ, וְלֹא בְאֵלֶּה גּוֹרָלֵנוּ כִּי אֲנַחְנוּ מִזֶּרַע אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב, מַאֲמִינִים בְּנֵי מַאֲמִינִים וַאֲנַחְנוּ זָכִינוּ לַעֲמֹד עַל הַר סִינַי וּלְקַבֵּל תּוֹרָתְךָ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה עַל יְדֵי משֶׁה נְבִיאֲךָ נֶאֱמַן בֵּיתֶךָ עָזְרֵנוּ שֶׁיִּהְיֶה חֶלְקֵנוּ בְּתוֹרָתְךָ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה תָמִיד, ”תּוֹרַת ה׳ תְּמִימָה מְשִׁיבַת נָפֶשׁ עֵדוּת ה׳ נֶאֱמָנָה מַחְכִּימַת פֶּתִי“ (תהלים יט:ח) |
Great Compassionate One, rescue us and our children from all outside wisdom. Don’t let us involve ourselves in them in any way. Keep our hands, minds and hearts away from them. This is not where our heritage lies. For we are the descendants of Avraham, Yitsḥak and Yaakov, believers and children of believers. We had the privilege of standing at Mount Sinai to receive your holy Torah through Moshe, your faithful prophet. Let us always have our share in your holy Torah. “The Torah of YHVH is perfect restoring the soul; the testimony of YHVH is faithful, making wise the simple.”[16] Psalms 19:8 |

Have mercy on us. Stir up your compassion for your children, the flock you have pastured. Guard us at this time of trouble on the threshold of Moshiaḥ. Save and redeem our souls and the souls of our sons and daughters. Let us never pursue ideas that are contrary to the Torah. Give us the strength to crush, break, destroy and uproot all heretics and atheists from the world. “Let them be blotted out from the book of life and let them not be written with Tsaddikim.”[17] Psalms 69:29 Let the name and memory of all who engage in atheistic speculation be blotted out from the world. Let YHVH cut off the man who pursues such speculation and follows their ways, calling and answering. “Let his children be orphans and his wife a widow.”[18] Psalms 109:9 “Let his posterity be cut off. In the generation following, let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered by YHVH, and don’t let the sin of his mother be blotted out. Let them be before YHVH continually and let him cut off their memory from the earth.”[19] Psalms 109:13-15 Let their arguments and theories vanish from the world. Don’t let them enter people’s hearts or be mentioned by name any more. |

Have mercy on your people Yisra’el. Raise up, elevate, exalt, reveal and radiate the wisdom of the holy Torah throughout the world. Let us all come back to your Torah and your service in truth, faith, holiness and purity. Let us constantly yearn to deepen our faith just as you desire. Grant that we should come to know you truly even in this world, and honor your great Name at all times. This was your purpose in creating all the worlds — that your creatures should come to know you, as it is written, “Everything that is called in my Name, I created it, formed it and made it for my glory.”[20] Isaiah 43:7 Have mercy on us and save us. For your sake and for the honor of your holy Torah, act to give the wisdom of the holy Torah victory over philosophical speculation, over atheistic ideologies. Let them all vanish from the world. None of them can stand up against even a single letter of your holy, pure, perfect Torah, both the written and the orally-transmitted Torah. Let everyone return to your Torah and genuinely serve and fear you with all their hearts and souls. |

Please, Merciful YHVH full of compassion, take pity on my crushed soul and help me strengthen and fortify my soul at all times. Give me the courage and determination to assert my holy, goodly soul against my body and its traits and cravings, until I succeed in totally cleansing my soul of all manner of materialistic traits and desires. Let me purify and sanctify my soul and body with all manner of purification and sanctification so as to release my soul from all the evil traits and cravings deriving from the four physical elements that make up the body. |

Great Compassionate One, lift me from the level of a behemah (domesticated animal) to the level of Adam (a human being). Bring me from the dominion of the body to that of the soul, from substance to form, from darkness to light, from folly to wisdom, from alien views and opinions to the wisdom of the holy Torah, from forgetfulness to memory. Grant me a strong memory and help me always remember very well everything that relates to your Torah and your service. Help me remember everything I learn in holy books and everything I’ve heard or am going to hear from the mouths of my teachers and friends all the touching holy words to fear YHVH and to devote oneself to them and their Torah. Through the power of holy memory let me remember everything clearly at all times from now and for ever. Don’t let me forget a single word of what I have learned. |
וְאֶזְכֶּה לִזְכֹּר תָּמִיד הֵיטֵב הֵיטֵב אֶת אַחֲרִיתִי וְסוֹפִי וְלָשׂוּם לִבִּי הֵיטֵב עַל מָה אֲתִינָא לְהַאי עָלְמָא שְׁפָלָה, וּמַה יִּהְיֶה בְּסוֹפִי וְאַחֲרִיתִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר יָבֹא קִצִּי וְלֹא אֶשְׁכַּח זֹאת כׇּל יְמֵי חַיַּי, וְאֶזְכֶּה לִזְכֹּר זֹאת הֵיטֵב בְּכׇל יוֹם וָיוֹם, כִּי כׇל יָמֵינוּ וּשְׁנוֹתֵינוּ הֵם הֶבֶל, כַּחֲלוֹם יָעוּף, וּכְצֵל עוֹבֵר, כְּעָנָן כׇּלָה, וּכְרוּחַ נוֹשָׁבֶת, וּכְאָבָק פּוֹרֵחַ וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהִמָּלֵט מִן הַמִּיתָה בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן, ”וְאֵין מִשְׁלַחַת בַּמִּלְחָמָה“ (קהלת ח:ח) וּמַה נַּחְשׁב עַל ה׳, וּמַה נַּעֲשֶׂה לְיוֹם פְּקֻדָּה ”זָכוֹר תִּזְכּר וְתָשׁוֹחַ עָלַי נַפְשִׁי“ (איכה ג:כ) ”זְכוֹר אַל תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת אֲשֶׁר הִקְצַפְתָּ אֶת ה׳ אֱלֹהֶיךָ“ (דברים ט:ז) מִנְּעוּרֶיךָ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי אֵין שִׁכְחָה לִפְנֵי כִסֵּא כְבוֹדוֹ, וְאֵין נֶעְלָם מִנֶּגֶד עֵינָיו עָזְרֵנִי וְהוֹשִׁיעֵנִי לִזְכֹּר אֶת כׇּל זֹאת תָּמִיד, בְּאֹפֶן שֶׁאֶזְכֶּה לְרַחֵם עָלַי מֵעַתָּה לְמַלֵּט נַפְשִׁי מִנִּי שָׁחַת, וּלְהָכִין צֵדָה לְדַרְכִּי אֹרְחָא רַחִיקָא וַאֲפִלּוּ זַוְדִּין קַלִּילָא לֵית לָן |
Let me also constantly remember very well what my ultimate destiny is. Let me keep my attention fixed on the purpose of my coming into this lowly world, and where I am destined to go when I reach the end of my life. Don’t let me ever forget this all the days of my life. Let me well remember every single day, that all our days and years are ephemeral, like a fleeting dream, a passing shadow, a cloud melting into nothingness, a puff of wind, a cloud of dust. There is absolutely no way to escape death. “And there is no discharge in war.”[21] Ecclesiastes 8:8 What will we think about YHVH and what will we do on the Day of Judgment? “My soul remembers and is bowed down within me.”[22] Lamentations 3:20 “Remember, do not forget how you angered YHVH your elo’ah“[23] Deuteronomy 9:7 from your youngest days until today, for there is no forgetfulness before the throne of his kavod, and nothing is hidden from before his eyes. Help me remember this always so that I’ll have pity on myself from now on and save my soul from destruction by preparing what I’ll need on my journey on that long road where we don’t have even the scantiest provisions. |
וְעָזְרֵנִי בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים שֶׁאֶזְכֶּה לִשְׁכֹּחַ אֶת כׇּל מִינֵי מַחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת מַחֲשָׁבוֹת חִיצוֹנִיּוֹת וְחָכְמוֹת חִיצוֹנִיּוֹת וְכׇל מִינֵי הִרְהוּרִים רָעִים וְעַקְמִימִיּוּת שֶׁבַּלֵּב שֶׁנִּדְבְּקוּ בְּלִבִּי וּבְדַעְתִּי בַּעֲווֹנוֹתַי הָרַבִּים וְכׇל מִינֵי מַחֲשָׁבוֹת הַמְבַלְבְּלִים מֵעֲבוֹדָתֶךָ הָאֲמִתִּיּוֹת, כֻּלָּם אֶזְכֶּה בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים לְהַעֲבִירָם מִדַּעְתִּי וְלִבִּי לְגַמְרֵי, וּלְשָׁכְחָם לְגַמְרֵי מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם וּמֵעַתָּה אֶזְכֶּה לִזְכֹּר אוֹתְךָ תָמִיד בְּכׇל עֵת בְּשִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵיתִי וּבְלֶכְתִּי בַדֶּרֶךְ בְּשָׁכְבִי וּבְקוּמִי וּלְדַבֵּק מַחֲשַׁבְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ תָמִיד, וּלְתוֹרָתְךָ וְלַעֲבוֹדָתְךָ בֶּאֱמֶת בְּיִרְאָה וְאַהֲבָה בִּקְדֻשָּׁה וּבְטָהֳרָה גְדוֹלָה, בֶּאֱמֶת וּבֶאֱמוּנָה שְׁלֵמָה וְאֶזְכֶּה שֶׁיִּתְדַּבֵּק לִבִּי וּמַחֲשַׁבְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ וּלְתוֹרָתְךָ וּלְמִצְוֺתֶיךָ בֶּאֱמֶת, בִּדְבֵקוּת גָּדוֹל וּבְהִתְקַשְּׁרוּת אַמִּיץ וְחָזָק מְאֹד עַד שֶׁאֶזְכֶּה לִזְכֹּר הֵיטֵב אֶת כׇּל דִּבְרֵי תוֹרָתְךָ וַעֲבוֹדָתְךָ תָמִיד לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד וְלֹא אֶשְׁכַּח שׁוּם דָּבָר מִדִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה וַעֲבוֹדָה לְעוֹלָם רַק אֶזְכֶּה לְזָכְרָם תָּמִיד בְּעָלְמָא דֵין וּבְעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי. |
Great Compassionate One, help me forget all the strange thoughts and ideas — extraneous ideas and extraneous wisdom, all the different evil mutterings and twisted thoughts that cling to my heart and mind as a result of my many sins. and all the different thoughts that distract me from serving you properly. Great Compassionate One, totally remove all of them from my mind and heart so that I completely forget them from now on and for ever. From now on let me remember you constantly at every moment — when I sit in my house and go on the way, when I lie down and when I rise up. At all times let me attach my thoughts to you, your Torah and your devotion in awe and love, holiness and purity, in truth and perfect faith. Let my thoughts and feelings be genuinely attached to you, and to your Torah and commandments truly, with a great attachment. With a strong and mighty bond, let me clearly remember all the words of your Torah and your devotion always and for ever. Let me never forget a single word of Torah and devotion. Let me remember them at all times — in this world and in the world to come. |

May it be your will YHVH our elo’ah and elo’ah of our fathers, elo’ah of Avraham, Yitsḥak and Yaakov, elo’ah of all the true Tsaddikim in earlier and later times, elo’ah of all your holy people of Yisra’el, our Father, loving Father, who knows all the hidden secrets of the heart: have pity on me and grant me knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Teach me and send me true guidance at all times, and help me understand the right way to conduct myself regarding voluntary fasts. Should I fast or not? Let me know the real truth so that I’ll be able to follow the true path exactly the way you desire. My feelings are so divided as to what I should do. I’m therefore throwing myself upon you alone. To you alone I surrender my body, my nefesh, ru’aḥ, and neshamah. Do whatever you want with me, and I will act according to your will. |
וְתַעַזְרֵנִי שֶׁלֹּא אֲבַלְבֵּל דַּעְתִּי הַרְבֵּה בְּעִנְיָן זֶה, רַק אֶזְכֶּה תָמִיד לְעֵצָה שְׁלֵמָה מְהֵרָה וְתַשְׁפִּיעַ לִי עֵצָה טוֹבָה מֵאִתְּךָ כִּרְצוֹנְךָ הַטּוֹב בֶּאֱמֶת וְאֶזְכֶּה לֵידַע וּלְהָבִין אֵיךְ לְהִתְנַהֵג בְּעִנְיָן הַתַּעֲנִיּוֹת וְאֵיךְ לְהִתְנַהֵג בְּכׇל הַדְּבָרִים שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם בְּאֹפֶן שֶׁאֶזְכֶּה לָסוּר מֵרָע וּלְהַכְנִיעַ הַגּוּף וְהַחֹמֶר לְגַבֵּי הַנֶּפֶשׁ וְהַצּוּרָה וְלַעֲסֹק בְּתוֹרָתְךָ וּבַעֲבוֹדָתְךָ תָמִיד בֶּאֱמֶת כִּרְצוֹנְךָ הַטּוֹב מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם ”הַשְׁמִיעֵנִי בַבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ כִּי בְךָ בָטָחְתִּי הוֹדִיעֵנִי דֶּרֶךְ זוּ אֵלֵךְ כִּי אֵלֶיךָ נָשָׂאתִי נַפְשִׁי“. (תהלים קמג:ח) |
Don’t let me confuse myself excessively about this whole subject. Let me always have a clear idea as to what I should do, and send me sound guidance as to what you truly want. Give me to understand how I should conduct myself both as regards fasting and everything else in the world, so that I’ll be able to turn from evil and subordinate my physical body to my soul and form. Let me genuinely devote myself to Torah and devotion at all times, in just the way you want, from now and for ever. “Let me hear your lovingkindness in the morning, for in you I trust. Help me understand this path I’m following, for I’ve lifted my soul to you.”[24] Psalms 143:8 |
וּבְכֵן יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶיךָ ה׳ אֱלֹהַי וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתַי שֶׁתַּעַזְרֵנִי לִתֵּן צְדָקָה הַרְבֵּה לַעֲנִיִּים הֲגוּנִים הַרְבֵּה וְתַחְמֹל עָלַי בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ וּבַחֲסָדֶיךָ הַגְּדוֹלִים וְהָעֲצוּמִים, וְתַעַזְרֵנִי לִתֵּן צְדָקָה הַרְבֵּה לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, לִתְמךְ וּלְסַיֵּעַ בְּסִיּוּעַ שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ מַמָּשׁ לַעֲנִיִּים הֲגוּנִים הַדָּרִים בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶזְכֶּה לְהִכׇּלֵל עַל יְדֵי זֶה בַּאֲוִירָא דְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, בָּאֲוִיר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בְּהָאֲוִיר וְהַהֶבֶל שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ חֵטְא וְנִזְכֶּה עַל יְדֵי זֶה לְהַמְתִּיק וּלְבַטֵּל כׇּל מִינֵי דִּינִים מֵעָלֵינוּ וּמֵעַל כׇּל עַמְּךָ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל וְנִזְכֶּה תָמִיד לִדְחוֹת וּלְבַטֵּל הַדִּין וְהַחֹשֶׁךְ וְהַסִּכְלוּת וְכׇל מִינֵי חָכְמוֹת חִיצוֹנִיּוֹת מִן הָעוֹלָם וְתַעַזְרֵנוּ לְהַגְבִּיר וּלְהַעֲלוֹת וּלְנַשֵּׂא הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה וְהַתּוֹרָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה וְתָאִיר עָלֵינוּ אוֹר הַחָכְמָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה, וְתַמְשִׁיךְ עָלֵינוּ חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים מֵאִתְּךָ תָמִיד וְנִזְכֶּה לְזִכָּרוֹן דִּקְדֻשָּׁה, וְתַשְׁפִּיעַ עָלֵינוּ מֵאִתְּךָ שֶׁפַע טוֹבָה וּבְרָכָה, חַיִּים חֵן וָחֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים וְשָׁלוֹם וְכׇל טוֹב וּבְרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים תִּזְכֹּר לָנוּ אֶת בְּרִית אֲבוֹתֵינוּ אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקב וּתְקַיֵּם לָנוּ מִקְרָא שֶׁכָּתוּב. ”וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקֹב וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי יִצְחָק, וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי אַבְרָהָם אֶזְכּר וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכּר“. And may it be your will, YHVH, my elo’ah and elo’ah of my fathers, that you help me give plenty of tsedakah to many genuinely deserving people. Great Compassionate One, have mercy on me and help me give plenty of tsedakah to causes in Erets Yisra’el. Let me give real help and support to deserving people in Erets Yisra’el so that I may become included in the holy air of Erets Yisra’el, in the holy air in the atmosphere and the breath that is untainted by sin. Help me thereby sweeten and remove all harsh judgments against myself and the entire house of your people Yisra’el. Let us always have the power to banish harsh judgments, darkness, folly and all ideas that go against the Torah. Help us strengthen and elevate our holy souls and the holy Torah. Shine on us with the light of holy wisdom, and always send us love and kindness. Grant us holy memory, and send us blessings of goodness, life, grace and kindness, love, peace and everything good. Great Compassionate One, remember your covenant with our fathers, Avraham, Yitsḥak and Yaakov, and fulfil the verse, “I will remember my covenant with Yaakov and also my covenant with Yitsḥak and also my covenant with Avraham will I remember, and I will remember the Land.”[25] Leviticus 26:42 |
וְתַעַזְרֵנוּ שֶׁנִּזְכֶּה לְגַדֵּל וּלְהַעֲלוֹת נַפְשֵׁנוּ לְפָנֶיךָ וְנִזְכֶּה לְקַדֵּשׁ וּלְקַשֵּׁט נַפְשֵׁנוּ בְּאֹפֶן שֶׁתּוּכַל נַפְשֵׁנוּ לַעֲלוֹת לְהַשְּׁכִינָה בִּבְחִינַת מַיִּין נוּקְבִּין וְתִתְפָּאֵר הַשְּׁכִינָה לְפָנֶיךָ עִם נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ, ”חֲזִי בַּמֶּה בְּרָא קָאֲתִינָא לְגַבָּךְ“ (זוהר ויקרא דף יג א) וְנִזְכֶּה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נַעֲשֶׂה יִחוּד קֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ עַל יְדֵי נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ שֶׁיַּעֲלוּ לְטוֹבָה לְפָנֶיךָ לְרֵיחַ נִיחוֹחַ אִשֶּׁה לַה׳. |
Help us cultivate our souls and lift them up to you. Let us sanctify and beautify our souls so that they will rise up to the Shekhinah as “female waters,” and the Shekhinah will take pride in our souls before you and say, “See with what a child I come before you.”[26] Zohar Leviticus, page 13 Let us bring about the unification of the blessed Holy One and the Shekhinah by means of our souls ascending to you for good like a fragrant savor, a fire-offering to YHVH.[27] After Exodus 29:25 |

Let me always eat in holiness and purity, especially when eating things derived from living beings. Let me sanctify myself to the utmost degree at mealtimes, and help me elevate the soul contained in the living being from the level of a living creature to that of a speaking human being by means of the blessing I make over my food. Let me recite all the blessings with the greatest fervor and concentration for the sake of your great Name. |
וְתִשְׁמְרֵנוּ וְתַצִּילֵנוּ בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים מִמַּאֲכׇלוֹת אֲסוּרוֹת וְלֹא יָבֹא לְתוֹךְ פִּינוּ שׁוּם דָּבָר הָאָסוּר לָנוּ וְלֹא נִכָּשֵׁל לְעוֹלָם בִּנְבֵלוֹת וּטְרֵפוֹת, אֲפִלּוּ בְּשׁוֹגֵג וּבְאנֶס וְתַצִּיל אוֹתָנוּ בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ מִשּׁוֹחֲטִים שֶׁאֵינָם הֲגוּנִים וְתַפְרִישׁ אוֹתָנוּ וְתַבְדִּיל אוֹתָנוּ מִכׇּל מִינֵי נְבֵלוֹת וּטְרֵפוֹת דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא וּדְרַבָּנָן וְתַזְמִין לָנוּ בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ תָּמִיד שׁוֹחֲטִים הֲגוּנִים וּכְשֵׁרִים וְתִהְיֶה עִמָּהֶם תָּמִיד וְתִשְׁמר אוֹתָם וְאוֹתָנוּ שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּשְׁלוּ עַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל יָדָם לְעוֹלָם בִּנְבֵלוֹת וּטְרֵפוֹת חַס וְשָׁלוֹם |
Great Compassionate One, guard and protect me from forbidden foods. Let nothing that is forbidden ever enter my mouth. Don’t let me ever eat an unkosher carcass and torn apart creature, even inadvertently. Have mercy on us and save us from dishonest shoḥtim. Keep me well away from any kind of unkosher carcass and torn apart creature, whether prohibited by the written Torah or through a rabbinic enactment. Always send us reliable shoḥtim and be with them and guard them constantly so as to protect your people Yisra’el from stumbling for ever through eating an unkosher carcass and torn apart creature, Hashem forbid. |
וְתַעֲזֹר לְהַשּׁוֹחֲטִים שֶׁיְּכַוְּנוּ תָמִיד הֵיטֵב בְּבִרְכַּת הַשְּׁחִיטָה, בְּאֹפֶן שֶׁיִּזְכּוּ לְהַעֲלוֹת הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַמְלֻבָּשׁ בְּהָחַי, מֵחַי לִמְדַבֵּר עַד שֶׁיַּעֲלוּ כׇּל הַנְּפָשׁוֹת הָעֲשׁוּקוֹת הַמְגֻּלְגָּלִים בְּחַיּוֹת וְעוֹפוֹת וּבְהֵמוֹת אֶל הַשְּׁכִינָה וְיִהְיֶה נַעֲשֵׂה יִחוּד קֻדְּשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ עַל יָדָם וְנִזְכֶּה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נִמְשָׁךְ עַל יְדֵי זֶה עָלֵינוּ שֶׁפַע טוֹבָה וּבְרָכָה וְרַחֲמִים וְחַיִּים וְשָׁלוֹם וְנִזְכֶּה לְפַרְנָסָה טוֹבָה בְּכָבוֹד בְּלִי שׁוּם יְגִיעָה וְטִרְחָא וְטִרְדָּא כְּלָל |
Always help the shoḥtim concentrate carefully on the blessing over sheḥitah so as to elevate the soul contained in the animal from the level of a living creature to that of a speaking human being, until all the souls trapped and incarnated in animals, birds, and beasts rise up to the Shekhinah, and through this may we cause the blessed Holy One to be united with the Shekhinah and bring us an abundant flow of goodness, blessing, love, life and peace, ensuring us a good and honorable livelihood without our having to exert ourselves excessively. |
אָבִינוּ שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם גּוֹמֵל לַחַיָּבִים טוֹבוֹת, גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים, אַתָּה יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁאֵין בָּנוּ כֹחַ לִשְׁמר עַצְמֵנוּ מִשּׁוֹחֲטִים שֶׁאֵינָם הֲגוּנִים הַמְּצוּיִים עַכְשָׁו הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד וְאֵין מִי שֶׁיַּעֲמד בַּעֲדֵנוּ וְיִשְׁתַּדֵּל בְּתִקּוּן נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ, וְיַצִּיל אוֹתָנוּ מִפְּגַם הַשּׁוֹחֲטִים שֶׁאֵינָם הֲגוּנִים הַגּוֹרְמִים מַה שֶׁגּוֹרְמִים, רַחֲמָנָא לִצְּלָן. |
Father in Heaven, who bestows goodness even on the guilty: bestow your lovingkind goodness. You know we are powerless to guard ourselves against unreliable shoḥtim. There are so many of them today, and we have no one to stand up for us and purify our souls and save us from the damage caused by dishonest shoḥtim. that cause whatever [damage] they cause, may the Merciful One save us! |

Master of the Cosmos, have mercy on us for your Name’s sake, for the sake of your mighty Shekhinah, for the sake of our fathers, Avraham, Yitsḥak and Yaakov, and for the sake of all the true Tsaddikim. Help, save and redeem us from evil and dishonest shoḥtim. Don’t let forbidden meat ever enter our mouths. For “You can do everything, and no purpose can be withheld from you.”[28] Job 42:2 Everything is in your hands, and even now, in this generation, you have the power to protect us from unkosher meat and dishonest shoḥtim. Have pity on us for your sake if not for ours. Great Compassionate One, send us good, respectable teachers for our children. Let them carry out their work faithfully and teach our children the maximum that is truly good for them. Let all those involved in teaching children be honest and upright so as not to spoil the schoolchildren’s holy breath, which is untainted by sin. Let their breath rise up and appear before you and find favor. Hear their words, and remember the covenant with our ancestors. Sweeten and remove all harsh judgments and decrees against the house of Yisra’el decreed against the whole people of Yisra’el, or against individuals. Sweeten all the decrees against us — those that have already been sealed and those that have not — in the merit of the innocent breath of the schoolchildren. |

Great Compassionate One, sanctify us with your supreme holiness and bring us back to you in perfect repentance with all our hearts and souls. Help us make amends for all the harm we’ve done and fortify our souls until we overcome our bodies and make them totally subordinate to our souls. Let us give plenty of tsedakah to causes in Erets Yisra’el until we become suffused with the holy air of Erets Yisra’el, which is untainted by sin. until it is so for entirety of the House of Yisra’el that their breath is as untainted by sin as the air of Erets Yisra’el is pure as the breath of the mouths of schoolchildren. Help the shoḥtim come to such a level of sanctity and purity that their breath will also be untainted by sin, so that they will be able to elevate the souls incarnated in animals and lift them up to their holy root through the breath of the blessing they make over sheḥitah. For you know the pitiful state of the souls that are incarnated in animals. Please have mercy on them and on us. For your sake help us elevate all those souls to their supreme holy root. |

Merciful One full of compassion, who has mercy on the poor and hears the cry of the needy: have mercy on us and on our souls, which are oppressed like birds trapped in a snare, as is revealed to you, since you know all secrets. Help me save my soul from destruction. For you know the great preciousness and splendor of my soul at her supreme root. You also know how I’ve spoiled and corrupted my poor soul. You know the tragic state of my soul, weary, crushed and torn apart between lions’ teeth. They’ve opened their mouths at us, saying, “We’ve devoured.”[33] Cf. Lamentations 2:16 I’ve been crying out to you for so long, but there’s no one to save me, because I’m the one who’s been cruel to my own soul. But you can save my soul through the power of your mercy. You have the power to turn my heart to good and direct it to you. Grant me holy wisdom and understanding, power, strength and guidance so that I’ll always be able to put my soul in control over my body until I totally subdue the body and its cravings and elevate my soul to your supreme holiness in perfect truth and faith. |

Father, compassionate Father, have pity on the kavod of the holy Torah you’ve given us. You know the amazing beauty of the precious Torah hidden within us. From now on help us genuinely purify and sanctify ourselves so that we’ll be able to bring out and reveal the Torah that is concealed within us. Save us from insults and embarrassment. Don’t let us ever be ashamed or stumble. Give us holy kavod, and let us receive the Kavod in great holiness only for the sake of your Name, and not to make use of the Kavod for ourselves at all in order to serve you truly and sincerely with no ulterior motives. Help us restore and elevate the Kavod to its root. And with the holy Kavod you will lovingly bestow on us, help us reveal the wealth of original Torah teachings that are concealed within our souls. Be with us at all times, and don’t let us say anything that is not according to your will. Be with our mouths when we speak and with our hands when it’s time for us to act. |

Reb Noson’s Liqutei Tefillot I:37 was first translated to English and published by Avraham Greenbaum in The Fiftieth Gate Volume 2: Prayers 21-40 (Breslov Research Insitute 1992). Greenbaum is a far better translator than I, but his style sometimes abridges the text and in some case omits important phrases. I have attempted to correct passages omitted from his translation by first setting down the entire text opposite his translation, adding all citation references, and making additional changes. Lacunae still remain, so please if you can, help to make a more complete translation of this prayer.
This prayer is tagged with our “problematic prayers” tag since it contains curses that we believe should be contextualized within the anti-Enlightenment and reactionary currents of 19th century Jewry. Amidst these anxieties is an admonishment on gazing at women which may be misapplied, we believe, to the repression of women visible in the public sphere. We share this prayer for historical interest and the possibility of revision through adaptive reuse.
