Friede sei mit dir, meine Tante, die einst mein Ruhm, mein Schutz war. Du unser Fleisch und Bein, du die uns stets so freudig unterstützt hast. Unterlasse nicht für uns zu Gott zu bitten, daß er die Ehre unseres Hauses und des Hauses unserer Familie beschütze, und in Frieden und Redlichkeit erhalte, und uns ehrenvoll unsern Unterhalt verleihe.	Peace be with you, my aunt, who was once my glory, my protection. You our flesh and bone, you who always supported us so joyfully. Do not omit to pray to God for us, that he may protect the honor of our house and the house of our family, and keep it in peace and honesty, and honorably grant us our sustenance.
Er rette uns vor Noth und Drangsal, vor allen Bedrängnissen, vor allen Strafgerichten, die die Bewohner der Welt heimzusuchen pflegen.	May He save us from trouble and distress, from all afflictions, and from all the judgments that afflict the inhabitants of the world.
O daß wir der Welt einst bei unserem Tode, einen Segen in wohlerzogenen Kindern hinterlassen mögen! Mögen sie stets so leben, daß sie den Besten, den Edelsten und Weisesten ihrer Zeit genug thun mögen. Möchten wir stets so leben können, daß unsere Eltern sich nicht unserer und wir uns nicht unserer Kinder schämen dürfen in dieser und in jener Welt.	O that we may leave the world a blessing in well-behaved children at our death! May they always live in such a way that they may do enough for the best, the noblest and wisest of their time. May we always live in such a way that our parents may not be ashamed of us and we may not be ashamed of our children in this world and in the next.
Gott möge uns gnädigst Lebensunterhalt verleihen, daß wir einen tadellosen Lebenswandel führen können, daß wir des Lebensunterhalts wegen nicht sündigen dürfen, um nicht beschämt zu werden in diesem Leben, und daß unsere frommen Vorfahren sich unserer in jenem Leben nicht schämen dürfen.	May God graciously grant us sustenance, that we may lead a blameless life, that we may not sin for the sake of sustenance, lest we be ashamed in this life, and that our pious ancestors may not be ashamed of us in this life.

“Am Grabe einer Tante” was translated/adapted by Yehoshua Heshil Miro and published in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaischer Religion. It first appears in the 1835 edition as teḥinah №126 on pp. 239-240.

Andreas Rusterholz is a professor of Theology (New Testament and Hermeneutics) at Kwansei Gakuin University School of Humanities Department of Literature and Linguistics. He translated (together with Takako Noguchi, 1943-2017) Jüdische Religion by Günter Stemberger (Beck 1995) into Japanese: Yudayakyo - Rekishi, Shinko, Bunka [Judaism: History, Faith, Culture], Kyobunkwan 2015.

Aharon N. Varady (translation)

Yehoshua Heshil Miro

Yehoshua Heshil ben Rabbi Binyamin Miro (fl. first-half 19th c.) was a writer and Jewish educator in Prussia, an early advocate and teacher of Jewish girls. He worked as a professor at a private school, and a teacher at the Königliche Wilhelms-Schule (and possibly also the Industrial School for Israelite Girls), in then Prussian Breslau. We know very little else about Miro aside from his publication of a popular anthology of teḥinot for German speaking women first published in 1829. If you know more about Miro, please contact us.
