„Wer ein Weib gefunden, hat Gutes gefunden
und Zufriedenheit erlangt vom Ewigen.“ (Spr. 18, 22.)
“He who finds a wife has found happiness
And has won the favor of YHVH.” (Proverbs 18:22.)
God, my God, from the depths of my motherly heart I call upon you on the day of joy. Full of thanksgiving and praise, my prayer to you rises for all the good things you have given me, for all the gifts of grace and love with which you adorn my path of life.
Thou hast spoken it in thy wisdom, that the man should leave his father and mother, and join his wife, and live for her, and walk with her in the way which thou hast appointed for him to walk on earth. Thanks to you, Almighty, the day has come which my mother’s heart has long longed for, the significant day on which my son will make the covenant of marriage with the wife of his heart, whom he has chosen as his life companion. Thank you, Lord, above all, that you have preserved him for me, that you have always surrounded him and surrounded him with the blessings of your grace and love, and have not let him perish in the thousand dangers of life. May you also be with him in all his ways, help him in all his undertakings. May you, who are the source of all blessings and all love, bless the covenant of love which he enters into today before your holy face, that he may find in it the blessing he hopes for from him, a wife who always does good to him and never causes him pain, a companion who perseveres with him in all the destinies and destinies of life, that harmony and contentment may always dwell between them, and that no cloud may cloud the sky of their marital happiness.
Amen.
All Father, there is only one thing I pray to you in this joyous hour. Grant, who holds man’s heart in your hand and guides it like a stream of water, that even if my child leaves his parental home, the love of a child will never leave his heart, grant that it may strike out at us with constant fidelity and intimacy, that the devotion to the companion of his future in him may not make his feelings cold for those who gave birth to him and raised him; that he may also remain our joy and delight, and always keep in the soul the love and reverence for which you promise a long life on earth, and your full reward from God in the hereafter. Amen.

“Gebet einer Mutter am Hochzeitstage ihres Sohnes” by Fanny Neuda from her Stunden der Andacht (1855). The prayer was first translated into English by Rabbi Moritz Mayer in his Hours of Devotion (1866). It does not appear in Dinah Berland’s 2007 edited translation of Stunden der Andacht. The English translation appearing here is entirely new. –Aharon Varady
