Kind Father! Your Holy Torah tells us that our mother Raḥel was jealous of her sister Leah because she had children and she, Raḥel, had none. You gave Raḥel the inspiration to give her maidservant, Bilha, to her husband, Ya’akov, in order that she could raise the children of Bilha as her own. In the merit that she brought up her husband’s children whom he had from another woman, Raḥel was answered with having her own children.
With this you showed us how great is the merit to bring up stepchildren and to treat them kindly. This merit is much greater than that of bringing up your own children, because the attachment that you have for your own children is natural; all animals have it. The hen raises her own chicks, but she has no instinct to care for strange chicks, so she pecks at the stranger and chases it away.
Raising stepchildren is a holy task. It shows a higher human feeling, one that is higher than that of any other living creature. The stepmother is likened to the ministering angels and that is why her reward is so great. Therefore you repay her with two great gifts. To Raḥel you gave two righteous children, Yosef the Righteous who sustained the Tribes in Mitsrayim, and Binyamin the Righteous in whose portion was built the Bais HaMikdash in Erets Yisra’el. She had nachas, joy, without boundary in this world and in the eternal world.
So, Kindhearted Father, purify my heart from all bad traits, especially anger and hatred, and plant in me good-heartedness and nobility. If my lot is to be that of a stepmother, at least let me be one of the good stepmothers that are a blessing to the world. Let me treat my stepchildren as my own children. Let me merit to see from them and my own children much nachas, joy. Amen.
