Gebet für eine schwangere Frau.

Prayer for a pregnant woman.

Möge es dein Ville sein, mein Gott und Gott meiner Voreltern, die Schwangerschaft der Frau (meiner Tochter, Schwester, oder Freundinn) zu erleichtern. Erhalte ihr ihre Kräfte, stärke sie körperlich und geistig. Bewahre sie vor bösen Zufällen, die ihr oder dem Kinde, welches sie unter ihrem Herzen trägt, schädlich sein können. Stärke ihr Gemüth, daß sie der schweren Stnnde ihrer Niederkunft mit frohem Herzen entgegen gehe. Erleichtre ihr ihre Niederkunft und laß sie eines gesunden Kindes genesen, daß sie der süßen Mutterfreuden in vollem Maaße und ungetrübt sich erfreue. Möge ein glückliches Schicksal über ihr Kind walten, daß es zur Freude seiner Eltern und Angehörigen, sich selbt zum Heil, dir o Gott zum Preis, und der Religionsgenossenschaft der es angehört, zur Ehre lebe, wachse und gedeihe, du hilfst allen die dich in Wahrheit anrufen, du wirst auch mein Gebet erhören, Quell der Gnade und des Erbarmes. Amen.

May it be your will, my God and God of my forefathers, to facilitate the pregnancy of the woman (my daughter, sister, or friend). Preserve her strength, strengthen her physically and spiritually. Protect her from evil accidents that can be harmful to her or to the child she is carrying under her heart. Strengthen her mind so that she may approach the difficult hour of her birth with a joyful heart. Make her birth easier and let her recover from a healthy child, so that she may enjoy the sweet joys of motherhood to the fullest and unclouded. May a happy destiny rule over her child, so that it may live, grow and prosper for the joy of its parents and relatives, for its own salvation, for the glory of you, O God, and for the honor of the religious community to which it belongs, you help all who call upon you in truth, you will also hear my prayer, source of grace and mercy. Amen.

“Gebet für eine schwangere Frau” was translated/adapted by Yehoshua Heshil Miro and published in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaischer Religion. It first appears in the 1829 edition, תחנות Teḥinot ein Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauenzimmer mosaischer Religion as teḥinah №57 on pp. 83-84. In the 1835 edition, it appears as teḥinah №59 on p. 106. In the 1842 edition, it appears as teḥinah №62 on pp. 111.

Andreas Rusterholz (transcription)

Andreas Rusterholz is a professor of Theology (New Testament and Hermeneutics) at Kwansei Gakuin University School of Humanities Department of Literature and Linguistics. He translated (together with Takako Noguchi, 1943-2017) Jüdische Religion by Günter Stemberger (Beck 1995) into Japanese: Yudayakyo - Rekishi, Shinko, Bunka [Judaism: History, Faith, Culture], Kyobunkwan 2015.

Aharon N. Varady (translation)

Yehoshua Heshil Miro

Yehoshua Heshil ben Rabbi Binyamin Miro (fl. first-half 19th c.) was a writer and Jewish educator in Prussia, an early advocate and teacher of Jewish girls. He worked as a professor at a private school, and a teacher at the Königliche Wilhelms-Schule (and possibly also the Industrial School for Israelite Girls), in then Prussian Breslau. We know very little else about Miro aside from his publication of a popular anthology of teḥinot for German speaking women first published in 1829. If you know more about Miro, please contact us.
