C’est pour l’homme seul que ta Providence semble faire un partage inégal de tes faveurs: aux uns tu donnes la richesse et l’abondance, aux autres la pauvreté et la misère; à celui-là un travail facile et productif, à celui-ci un labeur pénible et ingrat; mais qui oserait douter de ta justice et de ta sagesse, ô notre Père! It is for man alone that your Providence seems to make an unequal apportionment of your favours: To some you give wealth and abundance, to others poverty and misery; to this one you give easy and productive work, to this one hard and ungrateful toil; but who would dare to doubt your justice and wisdom, O our Father! Are we not all your children? Is it not up to you alone to give according to your divine foresight? You alone, Lord, know what is useful or harmful to each one, and I surrender myself to your love, for you open your hand and kindly nourish all your creatures (Psalms 145:16). |
Soumis et résigné, je recevrai avec une reconnaissance filiale ce que ta main paternelle daignera m’accorder; je ne désire que ce que demandait le sage de la Sainte-Écriture: «Ne me donne ni la pauvreté ni la richesse, donne-moi seulement ce qui est nécessaire pour vivre» (Prov. 30, 8). Mais, si je dois vivre dans la pauvreté, permets, ô mon Père, que le travail de mes mains suffise à mon existence et à celle de ma famille; que je gagne honnêtement mon pain quotidien et ne sois pas soumis à la cruelle épreuve de recourir aux dons des hommes. Submissive and resigned, I will receive with filial gratitude what your paternal hand deigns to grant me; I desire only what the sage of Hallowed Scripture asked of me: “Give me neither poverty nor riches, give me only what is necessary to live” (Proverbs 30:8). But if I must live in poverty, allow me, O Father, that the work of my hands may be sufficient for my existence and that of my family; that I may earn my daily bread honestly and not be subjected to the cruel trial of having recourse to the gifts of men. Banish from my heart all feelings of bitterness and envy towards those who are richer than I am; may the contentment and peace of my conscience be my wealth, for “it is better to possess little with justice than great goods with iniquity” (Proverbs 16:8). May my trust in you be my strength and consolation, and may I have the happiness of being able to help those of my brothers who are less content than I am. |
