עַל הַנִּסִּים וְעַל הַפֻּרְקָן וְעַל הַגְּבוּרוֹת וְעַל הַתְּשׁוּעוֹת וְעַל הַנִּפְלָאוֹת שֶׁעָשִׂיתָ לָנוּ וְלַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם וּבַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה	For the miracles and the relief and the mighty acts and the redemption and the wonders you did for us and our ancestors in those days and in this time
בימי אבותינו הקדמונים גלינו מארצינו וחרבה ארצינו בראשונה ובשניה. בימי בית המקדש השני קרב הקץ באותו יום קשה שבו נפרצו חומות עיר קודשינו, ויתר על אלפיים שנה צמנו ובכינו בו ביום בזכרינו מר גורלנו	In the days of our ancestors, we were exiled from our land and our land was ruined, once and then again. In the days of the Second Temple, as the end was approaching, on that difficult day when the walls of our holy city were breached, And for more than two thousand years, we fasted and cried on that day, remembering our fate.
והנה בדורינו לעמך ישראל פניך הארת וזכינו אנו נדחי ישראל להתכנס מכל ארצות תבל לארץ חמדה נחלתך לעבוד את אדמתה, לבנותה מחרבותיה ולהקימה משממתה. אף לירושלים עיר קודשינו שבנו ובנינו אותה לתפראתך	And now, in our generation, you shined your light on your people, Yisra’el And we have merited having the dispersed of Yisra’el gathered from around the world to the beloved land of your inheritance to work its soil, to rebuild it from its ruins and to establish it from its desolation. We even returned to Yerushalayim our holy city and rebuilt its glory.
מצווארינו פירקנו את עול הגויים וזכינו להקים את מדינת ישראל ראשית צמיחת גאולתינו היינו כחולמים, פינו מלא שירה ורינה – הנה אמת נכון הדבר הפכת יגון לשמחה, והתקיים בנו הנאמר על ידי זכריה נביאך ”כֹּה־אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת צוֹם הָרְבִיעִי וְצוֹם הַחֲמִישִׁי וְצוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וְצוֹם הָעֲשִׂירִי יִהְיֶה לְבֵית־יְהוּדָה לְשָׂשׂוֹן וּלְשִׂמְחָה וּלְמֹעֲדִים טוֹבִים וְהָאֱמֶת וְהַשָּׁלוֹם אֱהָבוּ׃“ (זכריה ח:יט)	We threw the yoke of the Gentile nations off our necks and we were privileged to establish the State of Israel, the beginning of our growing redemption. We were as dreamers, with mouths full of poetry and singing– indeed, our grief has truly been turned into joy, in fulfillment of the words spoken by Zekharyah your prophet: “Thus said YHVH Tsevaöt: ‘The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of fifth month, and the fast of the seventh month, and the fast of the tenth month, will become for the House of Yehudah, gladness and joy — festive times! and Truth and Peace you shall love.’”^[1] Zechariah 8:19.
אבינו שבשמים צור ישראל וגואלו, עזר נא לכל קצוות עמך להבין ולהכיר את הנס הגדול ולידע שכבר לא עת אבל הוא אלא עת שמחה והודיה לשמך הגדול	Our Father in Heaven, Rock of Yisra’el and its redeemer, Please help all the factions of your people understand and recognize the great miracle and know that this is no longer a time of mourning but rather a time of joy and of giving thanks to your Great Name.

Ḥanan Schlesinger

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger lives in Alon Shvut, Israel, and is one of the founders of Roots/Shorashim שורשים/Judur جذور, The Palestinian Israeli Grassroots Initiative for Understanding, Nonviolence and Transformation. Currently he serves as its Director of International Relations. He also is the founder of the American Friends of Roots, a multi-faith organization dedicated to supporting the work of Roots/Shorashim/Judur. Rav Hanan frequently speaks in the United States together with one of his Palestinian partner about the amazing work that Roots/Shorashim/Judur is doing in Judea/Palestine. Prior to the founding of Roots, Rav Hanan spent his whole career teaching Jewish studies in various seminaries, colleges and frameworks in the Jerusalem area, among them the Pardes Institute, Beit Midrash Elul, Nishmat and Yeshivat Bat Ayin. He also spent two years as part of the Judaic Fellows Program in Boca Raton Florida and over ten years in Dallas Texas, first as Rosh Kollel of the Community Kollel and later as founder and Executive Director and Community Rabbinic Scholar for the Jewish Studies Initiative of North Texas. He and his Israeli–born wife Ayala have four grown children and ten grandchildren.

Shoshana Michael Zucker (translation)

Shoshana Michael Zucker was first fascinated by the boundaries and history of Jewish liturgy as a teenager in NFTY in the early 1970s, the waning days of the Union Prayer Book. Since then, she has moved to Israel, raised a family and launched them into adulthood, while praying from varied siddurim with countless notes in the margin and extra notes stuck between the pages. A translator and editor by profession, she would rather study and teach Torah.
