Exhausted in strength and with swaying knees, we stand before you with bowed heads. O may you avert your gaze from our sinful activities, and never again withdraw your kindness and gentleness from us! We know and feel that by fasting we are not making any sacrifice to you, and that it is not pleasing to you if we chastise ourselves; but let it be a sign of humility, O Lord, that we have childishly bowed our proud minds; let it be a test of the improvement of our will that we strive as hard as we can to withdraw from the sensual, and for our sole aim to seek your direction. — |
Darum laß es dir gefallen, herr, dich nimmer unserem Flehen zu entziehen, Erhdrung uns zu schenken, so wir beten. Sei nahe uns, so wir laut empor rufen, und laß deine Milde walten, Tröstung uns zu spenden. Laß uns stets erstarken an Tugend, Frömmigkeit und Gottesfurcht, daß immer würdiger wir deiner Liebe werden, und väterlich du uns erhörest, noch bevor wir rufen. “Gebet an einem Fasttage der Gesammtheit. תַּעֲנִית צִבּוּר” was written by Max Emanuel Stern and published in his anthology of teḥinot, Die fromme Zionstochter: Andachtsbuch für Israels Frauen und Mädchen… (1841). In the 1841 printing, it appears on pp. 37-39. In the 1846 edition, it appears on pp. 39-40.
