Amarér b-Vèkhi — a seliḥah for 17 Tammuz by Menaḥem ben Makhir (German translation by an unknown translator)

Amarer b-Vekhi (“Lass bitterlich mich weinen ob des Unglücks”), a seliḥah by Menaḥem ben Makhir (German translation by B.L. Monasch)

A German translation of Amarer b-Vekhi, the second seliḥa in the Polin rite for the seventeenth of Tammuz. Published by B. L. Monasch, a prominent Jewish printer in Krotoschin (modern-day Krotoszyn, Greater Poland), in 1845. First transcribed from the Fraktur and orthographically modernized in 2025 for a European Academy for Jewish Liturgy retreat. Thank you to the great David Schapiro for his extensive help in the process!

Mit Goldgehängen und reichem Geschmeide ward von seiner Hand ich geschmückt;
und wie ein ruderloses Schiff dem Sturme Preis gegeben;
und ihre Augenlust, des Gesetzes Rolle, ward von dem Tyrannen Postumus den Flammen Preis gegeben;
darob erhebt sie weinend ihre Stimme.

  • We strongly advise against printing sacred texts and art containing divine names as these copies must be regarded with reverence, complicating their casual treatment and disposal.
  • If you must dispose of a printed sacred text (one containing Divine Names), please locate the closest genizah (often established by a synagogue) and contact its custodians for further instructions. We also recommend using Morah Yehudis Fishman's Prayer for Adding a Work to the Genizah.
Support this work:    The Open Siddur Project is a volunteer-driven, non-profit, non-commercial, non-denominational, non-prescriptive, gratis & libre Open Access archive of contemplative praxes, liturgical readings, and Jewish prayer literature (historic and contemporary, familiar and obscure) composed in every era, region, and language Jews have ever prayed.
