Was kann ich an diesem großen und furchtbaren Gerichtstage zu meiner Vertheidigung vorbringen? Bei der Stimme des Schofer erbebt das Herz in mir und meine Seele geräth in Schrecken.	Almighty Creator, just King and Judge, who judges all your creatures with truth and justice! What can I bring forward in my defense on this great and terrible day of judgment? At the voice of the shofar, my heart trembles within me and my soul is terrified.
Großer, barmherziger Vater! Mit gebeugtem und zerknirschtem Gemüthe trete ich vor dich und bete reuevoll um Erbarmen und Verzeihung aller meiner Sünden, die ich vorsätzlich oder aus Irrthum begangen habe, in Gedanken, Worten oder Thaten. Verzeihe, o allverzeihender König! Verzeihe mir und richte mein kummervolles Herz wieder auf. Wehe dem Menschen und seiner sündigen Seele, wenn du nach der Strenge des Gerichts richten wolltest. Aber, du bist ja erbarmend allen, die dich mit wahrer Reue anrufen. Mein Gott! dein Wort ist mein Trost: „Ein gebrochenes, zerstoßenes Gemüth verschmähest du nicht” (Psalm 51, 19). Laß mich nicht unerhört von hier gehen! Möge dir mein Gebet wohlgefällig sein, mögen meine Thränen gleich einem Trankopfer auf deinem Altare gütig aufgenommen werden. Vernichte, was Böses über uns verhängt ist, und verzeichne uns in das Buch des Lebens, zur Rettung und Trost, zur Freude und Wonne. Amen.	Great, merciful Father! But you are merciful to all who call upon you with true repentance. My God, your word is my comfort: “You do not spurn a broken and crushed spirit” (Psalms 51:19). Do not let me leave here unheard! May my prayer be pleasing to you, may my tears be graciously received like a libation on your altar. Destroy that which is evil against us, and inscribe us in the book of life, for salvation and consolation, for joy and gladness. Amen.

“Am Neujahrstage vor dem Schofer blasen” was translated/adapted by Yehoshua Heshil Miro and published in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaicher Religion. It first appears in the 1829 edition, תחנות Teḥinot ein Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauenzimmer mosaicher Religion as teḥinah №34 on pp. 43-44. In the 1835 edition, it appears as teḥinah №32 on pp. 48-49. In the 1842 edition, it appears as teḥinah №34 on pp. 51-52.

Andreas Rusterholz is a professor of Theology (New Testament and Hermeneutics) at Kwansei Gakuin University School of Humanities Department of Literature and Linguistics. He translated (together with Takako Noguchi, 1943-2017) Jüdische Religion by Günter Stemberger (Beck 1995) into Japanese: Yudayakyo - Rekishi, Shinko, Bunka [Judaism: History, Faith, Culture], Kyobunkwan 2015.

Yehoshua Heshil Miro

Yehoshua Heshil ben Rabbi Binyamin Miro (fl. first-half 19th c.) was a writer and Jewish educator in Prussia, an early advocate and teacher of Jewish girls. He worked as a professor at a private school, and a teacher at the Königliche Wilhelms-Schule (and possibly also the Industrial School for Israelite Girls), in then Prussian Breslau. We know very little else about Miro aside from his publication of a popular anthology of teḥinot for German speaking women first published in 1829. If you know more about Miro, please contact us.
