This rəshut, or introductory piyyuṭ, is recited in the Italian rite before Nishmat Kol Ḥai on (the first day) of Rosh haShanah. It was written by the fourteenth-century payṭan R. Yoav ben Yeḥiel of Rome. Also included is a rhyming acrostic translation.

Before my Sovereign I bend and bow; let me call “Great One!” before Their face! An upright judge is my God, and how They teach the sinners to find their place![1] Psalms 25:8 Before my Sovereign… |

Judgement Day this day is called as is the rule from Jacob’s God! On an awesome throne They sit over all, to set to straight the bent and flawed! And in the brazier the fire will scald to burn each brother engaged in fraud![2] Jeremiah 9:3 So you[3] The soul who sleep in me for now, regret and strike your thigh, abased, upon the urge’s shrines, stomp, plough, with toil it will be displaced! Before my Sovereign… |

On Sovereign blasting do arise, at shofar’s trumpets hear the sound! And break your urge in broken cries, subdue it that it may be downed! The pompous foreskinned heart abscise; trust God in whom salvation is found. Return, o Shulamite, to Them somehow, for They are patient and full of grace, They free your soul from shadowed clough,[4] Psalms 103:4 though lacking form in concrete space! Before my Sovereign… |

Asking to the book, God said: “Where is the surveyor, where the scribe?” To the righteous who straightly tread, My Love, like henna to describe. While fire on heretics is fed, the cruel a bitter brew imbibe. If You from half my crimes endow, the blessed Rock skips the first case. My righteous scale They do allow, and set upon the path my pace. Before my Sovereign… |

Bear this in mind: for God inquire from Judgement Day to that of Amends. Between them, let Their face inspire, That on the Tenth nothing incends. Wholeheartedly be Their sanctifier, For They will save you from bad ends. You too, my soul, to God avow, Before Them bend the knee and brace; They repay your goodness; now, Arise and shine, your light makes haste![5] Isaiah 60:1 Before my Sovereign… |
