El, merciful and compassionate,[1] Cf. Exodus 34:6, Psalms 86:15 helper in times of trouble, very near.[2] Cf. Psalms 46:2 When we suffer you are readily found. We come now to bless and sanctify the month of Adar. You did wonders for your holy people through Mordekhai the Yehudi and Esther the Queen in this month when the wicked Haman arose to destroy, to slay, and to exterminate both old and young in your nation, Yisra’el, the seed of Avraham. In your great mercy you only frightened but did not punish them. You sealed the edict with the seal of lime,[3] i.e., clay (טיט), easily broken, in contrast with a seal of blood which is irrevocable. Cf. Esther Rabbah 7.13, Esther Rabbah 9.4 and when the Jews repented you sent saviors, Mordekhai the Yehudi and Esther the Queen, that they nullified the edict. The wicked Haman and his children were hanged. So too, Master of the Cosmos, hear our pleas in the merit of Mordekhai and Esther. Bless this month for us for good, and place in the heart of the king and of their advisors the desire to always deal kindly with us, through your mercy. (May Haman’s students have Haman’s downfall. Amen.) |
To the best of my ability, this is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָה לְשַׁבָּת מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חוֺדֶשׁ אַדָר (“Tkhine for Shabbat Mevorkhim Rosh Ḥodesh Adar [II]”) which appeared in תחנות מקרא קודש (Teḥinot Miqra Ḳodesh, Widow and Brothers Romm, Vilna 1877) before its adaptation in Shas Tkhine Ḥadashe, the source from which this translation was made. English translation adapted slightly from Techinas: A Voice from the Heart “As Only A Woman Can Pray” by Rivka Zakutinsky (Aura Press, 1992). –A.N. Varady
