Ḥad Gadya has a place in Seder tables throughout the Jewish world, and in many communities it was read in translation. Probably not this one, but who knows? While there’s no known community of Jews who spoke Gothic or any other East Germanic language, there certainly were Jews who came into contact with it, such as the communities of Crimea (where variants of Gothic continued to be spoken until the 18th century). In any case this translation of Ḥad Gadya follows the grammar of Wulfila’s 4th-century Gothic translations. Also included is a description of a method for writing the Gothic language in Hebrew script. If your computer doesn’t have access to the Gothic Unicode block, I would recommend George Douros’s “Analecta,” offered as part of his free-to-use Unicode Fonts for Ancient Scripts package.

This is the translation of Ḥad Gadya into Gothic with a Hebraicization schema by Isaac Gantwerk Mayer for the Ulfian script alphabet. A technical note: unlike other Unicode addressed scripts, we had some difficulty with the Gothic text. We were not able to directly save the Gothic text through our WordPress backend. So in order to display it here, we first had to convert the Unicode text to Hexadecimal NCRs. For any future digital archivist (or site administrator), we hope this note will help to explain an issue that has long since been resolved.

The earliest known appearance of “Ḥad Gadya,” by an unknown author, can be found, handwritten, in the Prague Haggadah (1526). The Aramaic has been vocalized according to the Prague Haggadah (1590). Besides the transcription of the Aramaic with its vocalization, I have also added a translation adapted from Eve Levavi Feinstein’s Passover Haggadah translation. –Aharon N. Varady

From a family of musicians, Isaac Gantwerk Mayer believes that creative art is one of the most powerful ways to get in touch with the divine. He composes music and poetry in Hebrew and English. (He also authors his own original works and transcribes Hebrew and Aramaic text, adding niqqud and t'amim as needed.)
