Eḥad Mi Yodéa is a counting-song that is a beloved part of Seders the world over. It is mostly written in Hebrew, counting up to 13, but there are versions that can be found in many different languages. This translation into Esperanto was developed by the renowned Esperantist Erin Piateski, who made a translation of the entire Haggadah into Esperanto.

Esperanto as a language has a long Jewish history. Developed by the proudly Jewish L.L, Zamenhof, its utopian vision of a world of free cultural interchange has always been popular among Jews. In fact, the phonology of Esperanto bears many similarities to Yiddish. Thus, Isaac Gantwerk Mayer has developed a system of writing Esperanto in a largely Yiddish-based Hebrew script (PDF | ODT), into which this poem has been transcribed.

This is the translation of Ḥad Gadya into Esperanto by Erin Piateski with a Hebraicization schema for Esperanto by Isaac Gantwerk Mayer. Piateski’s translation first appeared in her כוכב ירוק הגדה של פסח | Verda Stelo Hagado de Pesaĥo (2010).

The counting-song, “Eḥad Mi Yode’ah” appears for the first time in the Prague Haggadah (1526) in Hebrew and Yiddish, and was transcribed and translated into English by Aharon Varady.

Isaac Gantwerk Mayer (transcription & naqdanut)

From a family of musicians, Isaac Gantwerk Mayer believes that creative art is one of the most powerful ways to get in touch with the divine. He composes music and poetry in Hebrew and English. (He also translates and authors his own original works.) Isaac runs a Jewish music transcription service, which will transcribe and set any Jewish music in any language, recorded or written. Erin Piateski (translation)

Erin Piateski is a patent examiner who holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a master's degree from MIT, both in mechanical engineering. Piateski learned Esperanto in 1995 and when she is not working on Esperanto projects, her hobbies include reading science fiction, listening to radio dramas, and international cooking.
