Master of all worlds, Lord of all creations, Bless us in all of our plantings and please favor our prayers for establishing peace, goodness, and blessing over the face of the earth, and privilege us all, together across the planet to plant trees in the soil of Israel; to witness the blossoming of fruit trees and to delight in their produce.[1] Cf. the Blessing over Flowering Fruit Trees in the Spring, Birkat haIlanot Blessed are you who hears prayer. Amen, may it be your will. |
This is the prayer for planting trees by the late chief rabbi of Haifa, Eliyahu Yosef She’ar Yashuv Cohen zt”l (1927-2016). The text of the prayer here is adapted from the text provided in 2017 by the Union of Synagogues & Communities in Israel (איחוד בתי הכנסת והקהילות בישראל). We are uncertain whether the prayer may have been written prior to 2012 for “virtual” tree plantings sponsored by the JNF (קק״ל), ostensibly so that Diaspora Jewish communities could take part in tree planting ceremonies in Erets Yisrael. As far as we are aware, this is the first time the prayer has been translated into English.
