Gott! so wie sich die Sonne über den Horizont erhebt, und mit ihren alles belebenden Strahlen nach und nach, von einem Ende der Erde zum andern, Licht und Wärme verbreitet, so wird alles, was ist und was lebt, rege und freuet sich seines Seins und Lebens; so erwachen auch Tausende meiner Mitmenschen zu mannigfaltigen Geschäften und Verrichtungen und alle nähern sich um einige Schritte dem Ziele, das du ihnen vorgesetzt hast. |
God, just as the sun rises above the horizon and gradually spreads light and warmth from one end of the earth to the other with its invigorating rays, so everything that is and that lives becomes active and rejoices in its being and life; so also thousands of my neighbors awaken to manifold business and activities and all of them come a few steps closer to the goal that you have set before them. |
Wie mannigfach sind die Geschäfte, die Absichten und die Bestrebungen der Menschen vom Palast bis zur Hütte! Jeder nimmt am Morgen den Faden seiner Gedanken da wieder auf, wo er ihn gestern, vom Schlafe überwältigt, fallen ließ. Jeder Mensch setzt seinen Gang fort durch Wüsten oder Blumengefilde, zwischen Dornen oder Rosen. How manifold are the affairs, the intentions and the aspirations of the people from the palace to the hut! Everybody takes up the thread of his thoughts in the morning, where he let it fall yesterday, overwhelmed by sleep. Every man continues his walk through deserts or flowery fields, between thorns or roses. Everything seems to stop, hinder, push back each other in their occupation, in their efforts; everything seems to be contradiction and confusion, but everything happens under your supervision and guidance, and thus everything becomes order and harmony, everything an infallible means to achieve and promote your highest intentions. How different is not the state in which my earthly brothers and sisters are now awakening to life! How different the degree of their education, their knowledge, their virtue and happiness. Here is light and truth, there darkness and error; here virtue and freedom, there vice and bondage; here delight and joy, there misery and wretchedness. |
Gott, du siehst, du kennst sie alle deine Menschen, du liebst sie alle, sie sind deine Geschöpfe, deine Kinder, alle von dir zur Glückseligkeit bestimmt. God, you see, you know all your people, you love them all, they are your creatures, your children, all destined by you for bliss. In all the entanglements of life, through all the destinies and encounters, men must become early or late, here or there, what creatures of your supreme wisdom and goodness, what children of the loving Father can and should be and become. But your thoughts are not our thoughts and your ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). We are surrounded by darkness, and before you everything lies in its brightest splendor. You encompass the whole immensity of time and space. And this should calm and comfort me when I cannot explain the condition and fate of my neighbors and cannot always look at them with serene joy. |

“Morgen⸗ und Abendgebet” was translated/adapted by Yehoshua Heshil Miro and published in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaischer Religion. It first appears in the 1829 edition, תחנות Teḥinot ein Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauenzimmer mosaischer Religion as teḥinah №65 on pp. 93-95. In the 1835 edition, it appears as teḥinah №67 on pp. 116-118. In the 1842 edition, it appears as teḥinah №70 on pp. 121-123.
