עַל כֵּן יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ בְּשָׁכְבֵנוּ וּבְקוּמֵנוּ נָשִׂיחַ בְּחֻקֶּיךָ, וְנִשְׂמַח בְּדִבְרֵי תוֹרָתֶךָ וּבְמִצְוֺתֶיךָ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד. כִּי הֵם חַיֵינוּ וְאֹרֶךְ יָמֵינוּ וּבָהֶם נֶהְגֶּה יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה. וְאַהֲבַתְךָ אַל תָּסִיר מִמֶּנּוּ לְעוֹלָמִים,	YHVH our elo’ah – when we lie down and when we rise up, we will meditate on your laws and rejoice in your Torah and Mitsvot forever. For they are our life and the length of our days; day and night we will reflect on them. Do not let your love ever depart from us!
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יהוה, אוֹהֵב עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃	Blessed are you, YHVH, who loves His people Yisrael.

This translation of the second evening blessing before the recitation of the Shema can be found in HaAvodah SheBaLev – the Service of the Heart (Kehilat Kol HaNeshama, Jerusalem, 2007). “Adonai” is used as a circumlocution for the Tetragrammaton in the English translation. I have replaced ‘Adonai’ with ‘YHVH,’ and ‘our God’ with ‘our elo’ah.’ –Aharon Varady.

Shaul Vardi (translation)

Shaul Vardi is a freelance translator and editor living in Jerusalem and active in the Reform community Kol HaNeshama (KKH). Among other liturgical projects, Shaul devised the transliteration methods used in KKH’s bilingual Siddur and in the bilingual accompaniment to the new Israeli Reform Siddur Tefilat Ha-Adam. He also composed the first Hebrew-language “mi she-berakh” for LGBTQI+ Pride Shabbat.

Levi Weiman-Kelman (translation)

Levi Weiman-Kelman is the founding rabbi of Congregation Kol Haneshama, a Reform community in Jerusalem devoted to prayer, study and social action. He is a founding member of Rabbis for Human Rights and teaches at the Hebrew Union College.

The work before us is included in the collection of Micrography of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and on their website they explain that it was created in 1824 by Baruch Ben Shmaria from Brisk, Lithuania or from Hamburg, for Aaron, son of Abraham, and for his wife, Reina-daughter of Joseph Kobrin, whose names, as well as the name of Baruch son of Shmaria, surround the three flowers that appear in the central circle, and the date appears in the chronogram, the numerical value of the words Ahavat Olam (Eternal Love).
