Be praised, YHVH our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by thy commandments and ordered us to light the Sabbath lamp. |
Je te remercie, ô Seigneur, de m’avoir appelée, moi, humble fille d’Israël, à accomplir le pieux devoir d’allumer la lampe du sabbat, symbole de la lumière éternelle. |
I thank you, O Lord, for having called me, the humble daughter of Israel, to fulfill the pious duty of lighting the Sabbath lamp, the symbol of eternal light. |

Lord, when, on the first day of creation, you formed heaven and earth, it was Light that first came to your voice to illuminate the work of your divine and almighty will! |

What would your magnificent creation be if darkness surrounded it with an impenetrable veil! |
Mais ce n’est pas seulement aux yeux du corps que tu fis briller la lumière; tu réservais un flambeau plus majestueux, un feu plus divin, pour éclairer l’esprit de ton peuple Israël, les descendants des saints patriarches. En faveur de la piété de leurs pères, tu leur donnas, au pied du Sinaï, la céleste lumière de l’éternelle vérite. Que serait l’humanité sans ce rayon divin! Car, ainsi qu’il est écrit: «Ta loi est le flambeau, et ta doctrine la lumière du monde.»[1] Proverbs 6:22. |
But it is not only in the eyes of the body that you made the light shine; you reserved a more majestic torch, a more divine fire, to enlighten the spirit of your people Israel, the descendants of the holy patriarchs. For the sake of the piety of their fathers, you gave them the heavenly light of eternal truth at the foot of Sinai. What would mankind be without this divine ray! For as it is written, “Thy law is the torch, and thy doctrine is the light of the world.”[2] Proverbs 6:22. |

You have chosen Israel to become the prophet of the peoples, the depositary of your law, of that ineffable light, the clarity of which must one day spread over the whole earth and enlighten all nations, so that all men may recognize and proclaim that you alone, God of our fathers, are the unique source of all light and truth. |

We, the children of Israel, give you thanks, Lord, that you have given us this holy mission, for which our forefathers sacrificed so many times the sacrifice of their goods, their blood and their lives. Through misfortunes and persecutions, they have preserved and passed on to their ancestors this sacred repository, this heavenly light, which will guide all the peoples of the world towards you, like the pillar of fire that showed our ancestors the way to the Promised Land. |
O Père miséricordieux, fais que mon âme s’élève de plus en plus vers ce foyer de sagesse, d’amour et de miséricorde. Éclaire, Seigueur, ton peuple Israël, qu’il croisse et grandisse dans la connaissance et la pratique de ta loi sacrée. Éclaire, ô notre Père, tous les hommes, afin qu’ils tournent tous leurs regards vers ta lumière, source de joie et de salut. O merciful Father, make my soul rise more and more to this home of wisdom, love and mercy. Enlighten, O Righteous One, your people Israel, that they may grow and increase in the knowledge and practice of your sacred law. Enlighten, O our Father, all men, that they may all turn their eyes to your light, the source of joy and salvation. Let the righteous of all nations rejoice in Your law and sanctify Your holy name.
