Am Sonntag
On Sunday
„Gott spricht: Es werde Licht!” (Bereshit 1, 3.)
God said, “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3)
Sovereign and Creator of the World, a new week has begun. This first day of the week evokes the spirit of the great first day of creation, When all was in chaos and bleak, when endless darkness rested over the awesome abyss. All at once you spoke — and out of the terrifying lap of darkness, a joyful, brilliant light emerged, the first cause and condition of all life and being.
Day after day your almighty “becoming” resounded anew through the chambers of creation. Each day the circle of your creations expanded further. New energies, new forms passed before the Light of Existence until they emerged into the world as manifest beings, imprinted with your exalted glory and majesty, reflections of your all-encompassing wisdom and goodness. Then the day of heavenly rest sealed the week so rich with creation, and you blessed it and hallowed it for rest and celebration for all time.
My God, it would not have been too difficult nor too much for you to accomplish the entire work of creation in a single day, through a single, solitary word, through a single, solitary breath. Yet you wanted to impart to us the great teaching that every day of the week was ordained for work and for labor, that a person shall let no day pass in useless activity or idleness; for the day that we do not make noteworthy through useful action and work is a day forever lost to us, stricken from the book of our lives.
Grant, O God, that I might live true to this conviction, that I might fill my days with wise activity. May you, God of strength, stand by me. May you, source of all wisdom, enlighten me through your understanding and insight, so in everything I undertake, I keep a good and worthy goal before my eyes and always find the right means to accomplish it.
Verleihe, o Gott, meinem Körper Gesundheit und Kraft, meinem Gemüthe Geduld und Ausdauer für all die Aufgaben und Anforderungen meines Standes und Berufes, daß ich niemals ermüde und ermatte in dem, was Pflicht und Gewissen von mir fordern. Laß leuchten meinem Geiste das Licht der Erkenntniß und des Glaubens, daß er nimmer von dem düstern Schleier der Sünde verhüllt und umdunkelt werde, und daß die Irrlichter der Leidenschaften meine Vernunft niemals irre führen;
O God, lend strength and good health to my body. Lend patience and endurance to my spirit so I can manage all the tasks and expectations of my position and my calling, that I never tire or become weary as I approach the place where duty and conscience lead. Let my spirit shine with the light of awareness and faith. Let it never be cloaked and shadowed by corruption’s dull shroud, nor let the false lights of material possessions lead me astray.
Amen.
And when I come to the end of my life’s week, when I stand at the threshold that leads to eternal rest and gaze back at my fulfilled labor and work, let the joyful awareness that “it was good” be worthy of my mortal conviction and of your divine grace. Amen.

This is the prayer for Sunday, a paraliturgical teḥinah opposite the Shir shel Yom (Psalm of the Day) for Sunday, included by Fanny Schmiedl Neuda in her collection of teḥinot in vernacular German. Fanny Neuda likely either composed or translated this teḥinah into German (from Yiddish) while performing in the capacity of firzogerin (precentress) of the weibershul (women’s gallery) in her husband’s synagogue in Loštice, Bohemia. The English translation here was made by Julia Watts-Beller, and first published in Hours of Devotion (ed. Dinah Berland, Schocken Press, 2007).

Transcription of Stunden der Andacht (second edition, 1858) was begun by Aharon Varady and and proofreading completed on German Wikisource. We invite the community to contribute an Open Content licensed translation of Neuda’s work. If you would like to, please contact us or include your translation below in the comments.
