Allmächtiger Vater der Natur! Am heutigen, am sechsten deiner Schöpfungstage, stand das Weltall vollendet da; aber noch fehlte das Wesen, für welches alles dieses gemacht zu sein scheint, und das ausgezeichnet und begabt vor allen erschaffenen Wesen dich, den Schöpfer, erkennen und anbeten soll. Und da ward dein mächtiges Wort: Wir wollen einen Menschen schaffen in unserm Ebenbilde in Aehnlichkeit mit uns. |
Almighty Father of Nature! Today, on the sixth day of your creation, the universe stood completed; but still the being was missing, for which all this seems to have been made, and which shall recognize and worship you, the creator, excellently and giftedly before all created beings. You have adorned mankind, the crown of your creation, with understanding, reason and freedom of will. Admittedly, our body is formed by dust and will be dissolved into dust again. But we are not completely perishable, there is something in us that rises far above the dust, that rises far above everything earthly and visible, that rises up to God. Our spirit works according to completely different laws than our and any other body. Man can cast his eyes back to the past, see out into the future, and connect both with the present. Yes, we bear the image of God on us and are capable of an ever-increasing perfection. |

This life cannot be my whole, my only destiny, it can only be the first, the lowest stage of my human existence; here on earth I am to make and prepare myself for greater things; and the more faithfully I fulfill my destiny on earth, the higher stages of happiness I may hope to ascend in a better life. Let me always be mindful of this truth, All-Good One, let this knowledge always live in my spirit; then the struggle of life will not make me despondent. Then, realizing that I am only a pilgrim on earth, I will not be carried away by the joys and sorrows in the colorful changes of life. Then I will not be overconfident in joy, not despondent in suffering. In the awareness that I have lived and worked according to your law, the recognition of the world shall not make me proud, its disregard, its indifference or its hostility shall not bring me down, I will always regard this life as a day of preparation for the great, holy, heavenly Sabath, the rest of which beckons us one day after tiring work days. “Am sechsten Tage der Woche” was included by Yehoshua Heshil Miro in his anthology of teḥinot, בית יעקב (Beit Yaaqov) Allgemeines Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauen mosaischer Religion. It first appears in the 1829 edition, תחנות Teḥinot ein Gebetbuch für gebildete Frauenzimmer mosaischer Religion as teḥinah №10 on pp. 13-14. In the 1835 and 1842 editions, it also appears as teḥinah №10 on pp. 15-16. In a note to “Gebet am Tage der Gedächtnißfeier verstorbener Eltern, an deren Grabe zu sprechen” published in the 1835 edition, Miro records that Isaak Plessner sent this prayer to him, and from this we infer that its authorship may also be attributed to him.
