Rabbi Samuel D. Soskin (1905–1970) born in Cleveland, Ohio, was a civil rights activist and Reform movement rabbi in the United States. He attended Western Reserve University and the University of Cincinnati before graduating from Hebrew Union College in 1932. In 1936, he took the pulpit at Congregation Beth El (Fort Worth, Texas) where he also served on many local community and religious groups. Besides his congregational work, he served as director of the Fort Worth Opera Guild and a chaplain and counselor at the United States Public Health Service Hospital. Soskin warned the community about the menace abroad and likened the Nazis’ early restrictions against Jews to Jim Crow laws in the southern United States. He was also among the founders in 1943 of Fort Worth’s Planned Parenthood chapter. During World War Ⅱ he was a chaplain in the Navy and one of his tours of duty was at the Manhattan Beach Coast Guard Station. He was later assigned to the South Pacific. In 1949, to came to Temple Beth Emeth (Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York). He served as national chair of CCAR’s Commission of Justice and Peace in the 1960s and led a group of rabbis who joined the Freedom March in Birmingham, Alabama. He also was a member of the social justice committee of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. He contributed to many religious publications and was the first editor of Social Action in Review, a publication of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
