„Gott spricht: Es werde Licht!” (Bereshit 1, 3.)	God said, “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3)
Herr und Schöpfer der Welt! Eine neue Woche hat begonnen! Ihr erster Tag rufet mir vor die Seele jenen großen ersten Tag der Weltschöpfung, da Alles war wüst und öde, und unendliche Finsterniß ruhete über dem schauervollen Abgrund des Nichts. Da sprachst du – und aus dem Schooße grauenhaften Dunkels rang sich hervor das freudvolle, strahlende Licht; dieses erste Bedingniß alles Lebens und Seins.	Sovereign and Creator of the World, a new week has begun. This first day of the week evokes the spirit of the great first day of creation, When all was in chaos and bleak, when endless darkness rested over the awesome abyss. All at once you spoke — and out of the terrifying lap of darkness, a joyful, brilliant light emerged, the first cause and condition of all life and being.

Day after day your almighty “becoming” resounded anew through the chambers of creation. Each day the circle of your creations expanded further. New energies, new forms passed before the Light of Existence until they emerged into the world as manifest beings, imprinted with your exalted glory and majesty, reflections of your all-encompassing wisdom and goodness. Then the day of heavenly rest sealed the week so rich with creation, and you blessed it and hallowed it for rest and celebration for all time.
Mein Gott, wohl nicht zu viel und zu schwer war es deiner Allmacht, die ganze Schöpfung an einem Tage, durch einen einzigen Ruf, einen einzigen Hauch erstehen zu lassen, allein du wolltest uns die große Lehre geben, daß jeder Tag der Woche dem Schaffen und Wirken bestimmt sei, darum der Mensch keinen Tag dahin gehen lassen dürfe in trägem, nutzlosem Müßiggange, und der Tag, den wir nicht durch Thätigkeit und Betriebsamkeit bezeichnen, ein verlorner für uns sei, ausgestrichen aus dem Buche unseres Lebens.	My God, it would not have been too difficult nor too much for you to accomplish the entire work of creation in a single day, through a single, solitary word, through a single, solitary breath. Yet you wanted to impart to us the great teaching that every day of the week was ordained for work and for labor, that a person shall let no day pass in useless activity or idleness; for the day that we do not make noteworthy through useful action and work is a day forever lost to us, stricken from the book of our lives.
Gib, o Gott, daß es mir gelinge, dieser Bestimmung getreu zu leben und alle meine Tage durch eine weise Thätigkeit auszufüllen. Ich schaue hinauf, mein Gott und Herr, zu dem schönen, wundervollen Himmel, den du über die Erde gewölbt, aus dessen heiterer Bläue du uns so freundlich anblickst, aus dessen umwölkten Höhen, Allvater, du zu uns redest, in der ernsten furchtbaren Sprache des Donners und des Blitzes, ich schaue hinauf, und mein Blick hanget mit Ehrfurcht an diesen Höhen, die du so reich mit Wundern hast geschmückt und ausgestattet. Ach, wie arm wären wir, so du in deiner Huld uns diesen Anblick nicht gewährt hättest. Was wäre uns die Erde, wie traurig, wie öde, wie freudlos, so wir den Himmel nicht über uns hätten! I gaze up at the vast expanse of blue — at the clouded heights from which you speak in the solemn, commanding language of thunder and lightning. I look up and my gaze rests with awe on these heavens that you have clothed so gloriously in wonder. Oh, how poor we would have been if you hadn’t, in your grace, granted us this view! What would the earth have been for us how sad, how barren, how joyless, If you hadn’t given us the sky? We cast our dearest hopes into the heavens; our spirits yearn toward its heights. Our gaze turns toward it in times of joy and sorrow, on good days and on bad. From the heavens we draw joy and strength into our hearts. Yes, O Holy One, your throne lies at the pinnacle of heaven. Your seat rests in the distant heights beyond all heights; yet, for all that, you are never far from your earthly children. Your justice and your compassion reign over the whole world, yet you carry the smallest of your creations close to your heart. You guide them with a faithful parental hand.

„Gott sprach: Ein Meer von Blumen, Blüthen, Sprossen, Sei übers Erden-Antlitz ausgegossen!” (Bereshit 1, 11.)	And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation: Seed-bearing plants, fruit trees of every kind That bear fruit with seed in it.” (Genesis 1:11)
Ewiger Gott und Vater! Tiefe unnennbare Rührung ergreift mein Gemüth, wenn sich mein Blick in deine reiche, gesegnete Schöpfung verliert. Wie vieles Schöne, Herrliche, Wundervolle tritt uns darin entgegen, in dem all deine Huld und Treue, all deine unbegrenzte Vaterliebe so sichtbar sich ausspricht. Was könnte nur immer das verlangende Menschenherz sich wünschen, das deine reiche und schöne Schöpfung ihm nicht in Hülle und Fülle darbietet! Was den Körper nährt und kräftigt, was das Herz erquickt und erfreuet, was den Geist adelt und erhebt, hast du für ihn hervorgerufen. All that strengthens and nurtures the body, all that quickens and buoys the heart, All that ennobles and elevates the spirit — you have spoken all this into being for us. You let your holy word spread over the earth, and the ground sprouted countless seeds and seedlings, oceans of grain and fruit-bearing trees, flowers of myriad colors and healing herbs. You sent forth bubbling springs, blustering storms, seas too vast for human vision.

Der du thronest im ewigen Lichte, dich preiset meine Zunge, zu dir erhebt sich mein Herz in Demuth und Vertrauen. Das Auge sieht dich nicht, der Verstand erfaßt dich nicht, aber das Herz ahnet dich, und die Seele erkennet dich im hellen Licht und Spiegel deiner Wunder, die täglich neu an ihr vorüberziehen. Am vierten Schöpfungstage hat deine schaffende Allmacht sich geoffenbart im Strahlenglanz der Himmelslichter, die auf dein Wort und Geheiß hoch im Raume ihren Gang angetreten. Wie groß sind deine Werke, Herr. Ein Tag verkündet dem andern deine Wunder, ein Tag erzählt dem andern deine Huld und Liebe für deine Geschöpfe.	How great are your works, O God! One day proclaims your wonders to the other. One day tells the other of your grace and love for all your creatures.
Am fünften Tage der Woche hat dein Schöpfungswille alles Lebensbegabte auf Erden ins Dasein gerufen. Wie viel, wie zahllos sind deine Geschöpfe, die diesen Erdball bewohnen, wie verschieden ihr Wesen, ihre Gestalt, ihre Triebe und Bedürfnisse – und über alle wachet dein Vaterauge, und für alle sorget deine Vaterhuld. Was in den Wüsten und Einöden lebt, oder in den üppigen, fruchtreichen Thälern sich aufhält, was hoch in den Lüften seinen Flug hat, und was tief im Meeresboden sich bewegt, sie Alle sind von dir bedacht und versorgt. They exist in so many different forms, qualities, natures, and ways, yet your parental eye watches over them all. Your parental concern hovers over each kind — over those that live in the dry, barren wilderness, over those that live in rich, green valleys, over those that soar through the air, over those that dwell in the depths of the sea — you watch over them and are mindful of them all. They call to you in the language of their need, and you hear them. You fulfill the need of each one. How then can you not rest your gaze on me, to whom you have given so much and before whom you have displayed such bountiful signs of your grace and love?

Green, hopeful leaves make up its roof. The walls are covered with ornaments and decoration. The table is set with inviting, lovely treats. Within it we experience a bounty of delights as we gaze out on pleasant vistas of the natural world. Yet often the sky grows dark, and in the midst of our joyous feast, in the midst of our celebrations, a cold shower of misfortune rains down on our heads. Heavy drops of bitter sorrow and pain descend on us. The raw north wind blows through the fresh, cheerful walls of our sukkah, and the partitions and poles of our luck and good fortune shake and shudder in the storm. One festive flower after the next falls ragged beneath our feet. One life ornament after another gets lost in the tumult. Deep pain runs through our souls, and we feel as if we’ve been delivered to the unfairness of fate. Then our only comfort is in remembering that all of life is fleeting,^[2] A reference to Qohelet (Ecclesiastes), traditionally read on the Shabbat of Sukkot like the festival of Sukkot. Soon our earthly hut will break apart, our earthly husk fall away, and our souls will return to their eternal dwelling places. We will leave all our earthly joys behind, those joys we so often take for granted. They will remain behind, along with all our earthly needs, all our cares, sorrows, and worries. All that will accompany us are our deeds and gifts — all the labors of love we have practiced, all we have offered and done for good and noble purpose, all the tears that thankful hearts have cried on our behalf — these will be the garlands of gems that decorate our heavenly dwelling places, ornaments that never spoil and never pass away. There our hopes will ripen into glorious fruition, our merits blossom into crowns, and all our suffering transform into endless joy.

In the subtitle in the printed editions of Stunden Der Andacht, this prayer is identified as a prayer for the last days of the festival of Sukkot (Shemini Atseret). Shemini Atseret is properly identified as a separate-yet-connected-to-Sukkot festival, ostensibly occurring the day after Sukkot. However, due to the celebration of a two day yontef in the Diaspora, the last day of Sukkot is extended to two days and the otherwise seven day festival of Sukkot is observed for eight days. It is this last day of the Diasporan Sukkot which overlaps with the first day of Diasporan Shemini Atseret. (The second day of Diasporan Shemini Atseret, and the very last day of all the festivals observed in the autumn month of Tishrei, is celebrated as the rabbinic Jewish festival of Simḥat Torah.)

Dieser Monat, der Schlußstein des verlebten Jahres, ist voll Ernst und hoher Bedeutung für uns: denn in diesen letzten Tagen des scheidenden Jahres soll sich unsere Seele vorbereiten auf den großen Tag, wo du, mein Gott, mit uns ins Gericht gehst, du, der Allerheiligste, mit uns gebrechlichen sündigen Menschen, du, vor dem selbst die Bewohner des Himmels nicht genug rein erscheinen, und wie erst wir mit dem schwachen schwankenden Menschenherzen, das so oft von den Lockungen und Verführungen der Erde gefangen wird, in das durch Auge und Ohr die Sünde einzieht und immer heimischer darin wird, und das so oft bald bewußt und bald unbewußt vor dir sich vergehet und deine heiligen Gebote verletzt. This is the prayer for the month of Elul included by Fanny Schmiedl Neuda in her collection of teḥinot in vernacular German. Fanny Neuda likely either composed or translated this teḥinah into German (from Yiddish) while performing in the capacity of firzogerin (precentress) of the weibershul (women’s gallery) in her husband’s synagogue in Loštice, Bohemia. The English translation provided here was lightly adapted from Rabbi Moritz Mayer’s 1866 translation.

Wir feiern heute ein hohes Freudenfest, das heilige Fest des Glaubens und der Gotteslehre. Mit Freude und Liebe horchen wir den letzten Worten, womit die heilige Thora sich an uns wendet; mit Freude und Liebe begrüßen wir sie, die sich heute von Neuem uns erschließt. Sie ist es, die uns so reich an Gottesfreuden, die uns so wahrhaft glücklich macht. It is the tree of life, whose fruits nourish the eternal spirit and rejoice the pious soul. It is the banner around which all the pious gather and beneath which all true believers join hands in holy covenant. It is the standard on which they swear to perform all that is good, holy, and for the honor of God and the glorification of their tradition. It is the cup from which we drink peace and tranquility for the afflicted soul, renewed hope and sweet faith for the drooping spirit, heavenly comfort and a healing balm for the lacerated heart. It is the sun that illumines the earth’s dark valleys. It is the light that cheers the gloomy huts of misery and misfortune and makes them shine with pure joy in God.

Rabbi Moritz Mayer (L. Frank 1866) was the first to offer an English translation of this prayer. While many prayers offered in his 1866 edition of Hours of Devotion (published by L. Frank) deviate considerably from Neuda’s German, his translation of this prayer remains close to the source.

Herr des Lebens, der du ordnest der Zeiten Lauf und Gang, du hast sie eingetheilt in kleine und große Abschnitte, in Jahre, Monate und Tage. Durch den Wechsel dieser Perioden werden wir inne, wie im raschen Flug die Zeit unaufhaltsam dahinrauscht, und uns mit jedem Flügelschlage dem Endziele alles irdischen Seins, der Ewigkeit näher bringt, und wie sie, die flüchtige Zeit, ist sie einmal dahingezogen, niemals wieder zurückkehrt, und all unser Wünschen und Sehnen nach ihrer Wiederkehr ein vergebliches ist. This is the Prayer for the Shabbat preceding the New Moon (Shabbat Mevorkhim) included by Fanny Schmiedl Neuda in her collection of teḥinot in vernacular German, Stunden der Andacht (1855). Fanny Neuda likely either composed or translated/adapted this teḥinah into German (from Yiddish) while performing in the capacity of firzogerin (precentress) of the weibershul (women’s gallery) in her husband’s synagogue in Loštice, Bohemia.

The translation from German into English provided here was made by Dr. Julia Watts Belser, adapted from how it appears in Hours of Devotion: Fanny Neuda’s Book of Prayers for Jewish Women (ed. Dinah Berland, Schocken 2007) where it was set in a poetic, line-by-line style. We’ve set Dr. Watts Belser’s translation opposite the German source, following Fanny Neuda’s original layout.

“Yedid Nefesh” is a piyyut first published in the Sefer Haḥaredim (1588) of Rabbi Elazar Moshe Azikri (1533-1600). The authorship of the piyyut is not completely certain. A version of the piyyut “with noteworthy text, spelling and pointing” may be found on folio 146 (verso) of Samuel b. David b. Solomon’s Commentary On the Book of Numbers (ca. 1437 CE).^[1] Find Stefan C. Reif’s The Hebrew Manuscripts at Cambridge University Libraries: A Description and Introduction Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1997, page 93. Reif attributes Yedid Nefesh to Azkiri. Presumably, the text must have been added to the 15th century manuscript sometime after the publication of Sefer Haḥaredim. It would be very nice to see a digitized image of this manuscript page from the CUL collection! Yedid Nefesh also appears in Moscow – Russian State Library, Ms. Guenzburg 320 as the last of “a polyglot of at least 24 different items written in different stages” (find Dr. Ezra Chwat, גילוי מילתא בעלמא Giluy Milta B’alma). Yedid Nefesh appears there under the following headline: ד’ בתים של שם בן ד’ ב”ה ששמענו מפי קדוש מכבוד החכם השלם מהר”ר גדליה בן לגאון המושלם המקובל [הא]לקי כמהר”ר משה קורדוברו זצק”ל”. Ezra Chwat: “This doesn’t necessarily qualify that Gedalia Cordovero (1562–1625, son of Moshe Cordovero, ReMaK), is the author. To be precise, it attributes to him the oral transmission.” Meir Benayahu in Yosef Behiri, 1991, p.544, “asserts that this witness must have heard the poem from Gedalia Cordevero after his descent [from Safed] to Italy in 1583. This would be a full five years before Ḥaredim was written (and 17 years before [it was] published). Having been transmitted orally for some time might explain some of the variants. In any case Gedalia Cordevero and Elazar Azkari are likely to have been well acquainted.” The piyyut has appeared with a number of variations in various siddurim.
