“Our fathers in the land of the exile… suffered and learned lessons from their suffering. They appealed to God in fasting, prayers, and prostration, to warn the people not to stray from the Haymanot [the laws and basic principles of belief among Beta Israel], to listen to the warnings of the Torah because of the destruction of Jerusalem. Sigd is an Amharic word meaning “prostration” or “worship” and is the commonly used name for a holiday celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish Beta Israel community on the 29th of the Hebrew month of Marḥeshvan. This date is exactly 50 days after Yom Kippur, usually falling out in late October or November, and according to Ethiopian Jewish tradition is also the date that God first revealed himself to Moses.[1] Jewish Virtual Library, “Ethiopian Jewry: Sigd Holiday“
Sigd is a unique holiday. Originally only celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish Beta Esrael community, it has gotten more traction recently. One could describe the key concept of Sigd as being the acceptance of the Torah — not the giving, but the receiving of it. Sigd is a holiday of the continuation of the covenant. No matter the persecution that the Beta Esrael suffered (and hoo boy, did they suffer), Sigd announced that they would preserve their Judaism through it all.
In the morning of Sigd, the community goes out to a mountain with the sacred Orit (the Pentateuch, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth) and recites prayers, after which several texts from the Orit and elsewhere in the Gəʿəz Bible are read. The four readings here include:
- the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19-20),
- the rededication ceremony described in Neḥemiah 9 and considered to be the source for the majority the holiday’s observances,
- the blessings and curses of the mountains (Deuteronomy 27),
- and Psalms 122.[2] Nota bene: in the Masoretic text used by most of the world’s Jews, this psalm is numbered Psalm 122. The Ethiopian Gəʿəz text for Psalms uses a different enumeration system, in which it is Psalm 121. In context this psalm is generally not read as part of the Biblical reading service, but rather as a part of the prayers preceding it, specifically, surrounding the text of Menabērtē Bēytē Dawid. The first verses are read, then the full text of Menabērtē Bēytē Dawid (which includes the verse ‘Jerusalem, built up like a city knit together’ within it) is inserted, followed by the rest of the psalm read at the end.

וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ לִשְׁמֹ֗עַ וְלֹא־זָכְר֤וּ נִפְלְאֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֣יתָ עִמָּהֶ֔ם וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ אֶת־עׇרְפָּ֔ם וַיִּתְּנוּ־רֹ֛אשׁ לָשׁ֥וּב לְעַבְדֻתָ֖ם בְּמִרְיָ֑ם וְאַתָּה֩ אֱל֨וֹהַּ סְלִיח֜וֹת חַנּ֧וּן וְרַח֛וּם אֶֽרֶךְ־אַפַּ֥יִם וְרַב־חֶ֖סֶד וחסד וְלֹ֥א עֲזַבְתָּֽם׃ |
And they refused to listen and did not remember Your miracles that You did with them, and they stiffened their napes and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in their bitterness. But You, God of Forgiveness, Merciful and Compassionate, Long-Suffering and Great in Kindness, did not leave them. |

Wäʽadi gäbəru lomu lahəmä zäsəbəkä wäyəbelu ʾəmunətu ʾämaləkətinä ʾəla ʾäwəṣ́əʾunä ʾəmənä Gəbəṣə wäfädəfadä ʾäməʽəʽukä. |

You, in Your great compassion, did not leave them in the desert; the pillar of cloud did not turn from them in the day to guide them on the way, nor the pillar of fire at night to illuminate them on the way they would go upon. |
Wäʾänətä ʾəsəmä bəzuḫə məḥərätəka ʾigädäfəkəmu bägädamə mäbälətäni ʾiyaʽəsäləkä ʽamədä dämäna ʾəmənehomu bäzäbotu märaḥəkomu wälelitäni säʽamədä ʾəsatə ʾäbərahəkä lomu wäʾärəʾäyəkomu fənotä ʾənətä bati yäḥäwəru. |
וְרוּחֲךָ֙ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה נָתַ֖תָּ לְהַשְׂכִּילָ֑ם וּמַנְךָ֙ לֹא־מָנַ֣עְתָּ מִפִּיהֶ֔ם וּמַ֛יִם נָתַ֥תָּה לָהֶ֖ם לִצְמָאָֽם׃ |
With Your good spirit you gave them to teach them, and Your manna You did not withhold from their mouths, and water You gave them for their thirst. |

Wäʾäbəzaḫəkä wəludomu kämäbä sämayə wäʾäbaʾəkomu mədərä ʾənətä təbelomu läʾäbäwihomu wäwäräsəwa. |
וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ הַבָּנִים֙ וַיִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתַּכְנַ֨ע לִפְנֵיהֶ֜ם אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֤י הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ הַכְּנַ֣עֲנִ֔ים וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיָדָ֑ם וְאֶת־מַלְכֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־עַֽמְמֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת בָּהֶ֖ם כִּרְצוֹנָֽם׃ |
And the children came and inherited the land, and You subdued before them all the residents of the land, the Canaanites, and you gave them into their hand, their kings and the peoples of the land, do to with them as willed. |

וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ עָרִ֣ים בְּצוּרֹת֮ וַאֲדָמָ֣ה שְׁמֵנָה֒ וַיִּֽירְשׁ֡וּ בָּתִּ֣ים מְלֵֽאִים־כׇּל־ט֠וּב בֹּר֨וֹת חֲצוּבִ֜ים כְּרָמִ֧ים וְזֵיתִ֛ים וְעֵ֥ץ מַאֲכָ֖ל לָרֹ֑ב וַיֹּאכְל֤וּ וַֽיִּשְׂבְּעוּ֙ וַיַּשְׁמִ֔ינוּ וַיִּֽתְעַדְּנ֖וּ בְּטוּבְךָ֥ הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ |
And they captured walled cities and rich land, and possessed houses full of goodness, hewn wells, vineyards, olive trees, a great many food trees; and they ate and were satisfied and grew fat and pampered in Your great goodness. |
Wänäśəʾu ʾahəgurä ʽäbäyətä wäwäräsu ʾäbəyatä zäməluʾə kʷəlo bäräkätä wäʾezäḳətä wəḳəro wäʽäṣädä wäyənə wäzäḳəbəʾə wäkʷəlo ʽəṣ́äwä ḳäməʽa zäyətəbälaʽə. Wäbäləbu wäṣägəbu wäsəbəḥä wäfägəhu bäbäräkätəkə ʽäbiyə. |
וַיַּמְר֨וּ וַֽיִּמְרְד֜וּ בָּ֗ךְ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤כוּ אֶת־תּוֹרָֽתְךָ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י גַוָּ֔ם וְאֶת־נְבִיאֶ֣יךָ הָרָ֔גוּ אֲשֶׁר־הֵעִ֥ידוּ בָ֖ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֵלֶ֑יךָ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ נֶאָצ֖וֹת גְּדוֹלֹֽת׃ |
And they rebelled and revolted against you and threw Your Teaching behind them and killed Your prophets who testified to them to return to You, and did great blasphemies. |
Wäʽäläwukä wäḫədägʷəkä wägədäfu ḥəgäsə wäʾägəbəʾəwo dəḫərä zäbanomu wäḳätälu näbiyatika ʾəlä śäṣəwomu wäʾäsəməʽu laʽəlehomu kämä yəgəbəʾu ḫäbekä wäbəzuḫa fädəfadä ʾaməʽərakä. |
וַֽתִּתְּנֵם֙ בְּיַ֣ד צָֽרֵיהֶ֔ם וַיָּצֵ֖רוּ לָהֶ֑ם וּבְעֵ֤ת צָֽרָתָם֙ יִצְעֲק֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּה֙ מִשָּׁמַ֣יִם תִּשְׁמָ֔ע וּֽכְרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ הָֽרַבִּ֗ים תִּתֵּ֤ן לָהֶם֙ מֽוֹשִׁיעִ֔ים וְיוֹשִׁיע֖וּם מִיַּ֥ד צָרֵיהֶֽם׃ |
And you gave them over to their oppressors’ hands, and they oppressed them, and at the time of their oppression they would call to You and You would hear them from heaven, and by Your great compassion You would give them deliverers who would deliver them from the hand of their oppressors. |
Wäʾägəbaʾəkomu wəsətä ʾədä ʾəlä yaśaḳəyəwomu:wäʾäḥəmäməwomu. Wäsobä tämänədäsu gäna ḫäbekä wäʾänətäni ʽəmaʽəkämu ʾəməsämayə wäbäʽäbiyə məḥərätəkä wähäbəkomu mädəḫənitä wäʾadəḫanəkomu ʾəməʾədə ʾəlä yəśaḳəyəwomu. |
וּכְנ֣וֹחַ לָהֶ֔ם יָשׁ֕וּבוּ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רַ֖ע לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַתַּֽעַזְבֵ֞ם בְּיַ֤ד אֹֽיְבֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּרְדּ֣וּ בָהֶ֔ם וַיָּשׁ֙וּבוּ֙ וַיִּזְעָק֔וּךָ וְאַתָּ֞ה מִשָּׁמַ֧יִם תִּשְׁמַ֛ע וְתַצִּילֵ֥ם כְּֽרַחֲמֶ֖יךָ רַבּ֥וֹת עִתִּֽים׃ |
And when they were at rest they returned to do evil before You, and You abandoned them to the hand of enemies who subjugated them, and they cried out to You, and You would hear them from heaven and save them by Your compassion time and again. |
Wäsobä ʾäʽəräfu tämäyəṭu wägäbəru ʾəkuyä bäḳədəmekä wäḫädägomu wəsətä ʾədä ṣ́äromu:wäḳäyəwomu wäkaʽəbä gäbäru ḫəbekä wäsämaʽəkomu ʾəməsämayə wäʾädəḫanəkomu bäbəzuḫə məḥərätəkä. |
וַתָּ֨עַד בָּהֶ֜ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֶל־תּוֹרָתֶ֗ךָ וְהֵ֨מָּה הֵזִ֜ידוּ וְלֹא־שָׁמְע֤וּ לְמִצְוֺתֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְמִשְׁפָּטֶ֣יךָ חָֽטְאוּ־בָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אָדָ֖ם וְחָיָ֣ה בָהֶ֑ם וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ כָתֵף֙ סוֹרֶ֔רֶת וְעׇרְפָּ֥ם הִקְשׁ֖וּ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ |
And You testified to them to return to Your Teaching, and they were arrogant and did not listen to Your commandments and sinned regarding Your rules by which a person does and lives by, and they turned a stubborn shoulder and their necks stiffened and they did not listen. |
Wäʾəsəmaʽəkä laʽəlehomu kämä yətəmäyäṭu wəsətä ḥəgəkä wäʾisäməṣ́ukä wäʾäbäsu bätəʾəzazəkä wäbäkʷənänekä zägäbärəkä läʾəgwalä ʾəmäḥəyawə bähäbotu yäḥäyəwu wämäṭäwuzäbanomu wäʽäläwukä wäʾägəzäfu kəsadomu wäʾäbäyukä. |
וַתִּמְשֹׁ֤ךְ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ שָׁנִ֣ים רַבּ֔וֹת וַתָּ֨עַד בָּ֧ם בְּרוּחֲךָ֛ בְּיַד־נְבִיאֶ֖יךָ וְלֹ֣א הֶאֱזִ֑ינוּ וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד עַמֵּ֥י הָאֲרָצֹֽת׃ |
And you dealt with them many a year, and testified to them in Your spirit by Your prophets, and they did not listen, and You gave them over to the peoples of the land. |
Wätäʽagäśəkomu ʽamätatə bəzuḫa wäʾäsəmaʽəkä laʽəlehomu bämänəfäsəka bäʾədä näbiyatikä wäʾiyaṣäməʾukä wäʾägəbaʾəkomu wəsətä ʾäḥəzabä mədərə. |
וּֽבְרַחֲמֶ֧יךָ הָרַבִּ֛ים לֹֽא־עֲשִׂיתָ֥ם כָּלָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א עֲזַבְתָּ֑ם כִּ֛י אֵֽל־חַנּ֥וּן וְרַח֖וּם אָֽתָּה׃ |
And in Your great mercy You did not end them nor leave them, for a merciful and compassionate God are You. |
Wäʾänətäsä bäbəzuḫə məḥərätəkä ʾigäbärəkä laʽəlehomu bäzätaṭäfəʾomu ʾəsəmä ḫayalə ʾänətä mäḥäri wämäsətäśahələ. |
וְעַתָּ֣ה אֱ֠לֹהֵ֠ינוּ הָאֵ֨ל הַגָּד֜וֹל הַגִּבּ֣וֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא֮ שׁוֹמֵ֣ר הַבְּרִ֣ית וְהַחֶ֒סֶד֒ אַל־יִמְעַ֣ט לְפָנֶ֡יךָ אֵ֣ת כׇּל־הַתְּלָאָ֣ה אֲֽשֶׁר־מְ֠צָאַ֠תְנוּ לִמְלָכֵ֨ינוּ לְשָׂרֵ֧ינוּ וּלְכֹהֲנֵ֛ינוּ וְלִנְבִיאֵ֥ינוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ וּלְכׇל־עַמֶּ֑ךָ מִימֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י אַשּׁ֔וּר עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ |
And now, our God, great, mighty and awesome God, Guardian of the covenant and the compassion, do not treat as minute before You all the suffering that has found us, our kings, our nobles and our priests and our prophets and our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the king of Assyria to this day. |
Wäyəʾəzeni ʾäməlakənä ṣənuʽə wäḫayalə wäč̣əbäyə wägəmə zäyäʽaḳəbə kidano wäməḥəräto ʾiyəkunə ḫədaṭä bäḳədəmekä zulu zati ḥəmamənə ʾənətä räkäbätänä wälänägäśətənä wälämälaʾəkətinä wäläkahənati wälänäbiyatinä wäläʾäbäwinä wäläkʷəlu ḥəzəbənä ʾəməʾämä mäwaʽəlihomu länägäśətä ʾäsurə ʾəsəkä yomə ʾəsəkä zati ʽəlätə. |
וְאַתָּ֣ה צַדִּ֔יק עַ֖ל כׇּל־הַבָּ֣א עָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־אֱמֶ֥ת עָשִׂ֖יתָ וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ׃ |
And You are righteous for all who come to You, for You do truth and we have been evil. |
Wäʾänətä ṣadəḳə bäkʷəlu zäʾäməṣaʾəka laʽəlenä ʾəsəmä rətuʽə gəbərəkä. |
וְאֶת־מְלָכֵ֤ינוּ שָׂרֵ֙ינוּ֙ כֹּהֲנֵ֣ינוּ וַאֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ לֹ֥א עָשׂ֖וּ תּוֹרָתֶ֑ךָ וְלֹ֤א הִקְשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ אֶל־מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ וּלְעֵ֣דְוֺתֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַעִידֹ֖תָ בָּהֶֽם׃ |
And our kings, our nobles, our priests, and our ancestors did not do Your Teaching, and did not heed Your commandments and Your testimonies that You testified to them. |
Nəḥənäni wänägäśətənäni wämälaʾəkətinäni wäkahənatinäni wäʾäbäwinäni ʾigäbəru ḥəgäkä wäʾiyaṣəməʾu təʾəzazäkə wäsəməʽaka zäʾäsəmaʽəkä laʽəlehomu. |
וְהֵ֣ם בְּמַלְכוּתָם֩ וּבְטוּבְךָ֨ הָרָ֜ב אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּ לָהֶ֗ם וּבְאֶ֨רֶץ הָרְחָבָ֧ה וְהַשְּׁמֵנָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּ לִפְנֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֣א עֲבָד֑וּךָ וְֽלֹא־שָׁ֔בוּ מִמַּֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעִֽים׃ |
And they in their kingdom in the great goodness that You gave to them, and in the wide and rich land that You gave before them, they did not serve You, and did not return from their evil deeds. |
Wäʾəmunətuni ʾəlä wähäbəkomu bämänəgəśətəkä wäbäbəzəḫa nirutəkä mədərä bäḫäbä səbəḥətä wähäbəkomu ḳədəmehomu wäʾitäḳänəyu läkä wäʾitämäyəṭu ʾəməʾəkäyä məgəbaromu. |
הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ הַיּ֖וֹם עֲבָדִ֑ים וְהָאָ֜רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּה לַאֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת־פִּרְיָהּ֙ וְאֶת־טוּבָ֔הּ הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ עֲבָדִ֖ים עָלֶֽיהָ׃ |
Hey, we are slaves today, and the land that You gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and its goodness, hey, we are slaves upon it! |

And its great produce goes to kings whom You set over us for our sins. And over our bodies they rule and over our animals as they will, and we are in great distress! |
