Ruth, chapter 1

And it was, in the days the judges judged, there was a famine in the land, and a man went from Bethlehem[1] house of bread  in Judah, to stay in the fields of Moab,[2] from the father  him and his wife and his two sons. And the man’s name was Elimelekh,[3] my God is sovereign  and his wife’s name was Naʿomi,[4] my sweetness  and his two sons were named Maḥlon[5] sickness  and Khilyon,[6] destruction  Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah, and they came to the fields of Moab and were there. And Elimelekh Naʿomi’s husband[7] The word translated as ”husband” is equivalent to the word translated as ”man” depending on the context.  died, and she remained with her two sons. And they took Moabite wives — one named ʿOrpah[8] her nape  and the other named Ruth,[9] girlfriend  and they stayed there around ten years. And the two of them also died, Maḥlon and Khilyon, and the woman remained without her two sons and her husband. And she got up with her daughters-in-law and returned from the fields of Moab, because she heard in the fields of Moab that the Cause accounted for Their people to give them bread. And she left the place that she had been, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. And Naʿomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return, each woman to her father’s house. Let the Cause do kindness to you just as you did with the dead and me. May the Cause grant you that you find rest, each woman in her husband’s house.” And she kissed them and they raised their voice and cried. And they said to her, “But with you we will return to your people!” And Naʿomi said, “Return, my daughters! Why would you go with me? Do I still have sons in my innards that you would have as husbands? Return, my daughters, go! For I am too old to have a husband, for if I had said I had hope, if I had a husband tonight and bore children, would you wait until they grew? Would you cloister yourself rather than having a husband? No, my daughters! For I am far bitterer than you, for the Cause’s hand went out against me.” And they raised their voices and cried more, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stuck with her. And she said, “Hey, your sister-in-law returned to her people and her god. Return after your sister-in-law!” And Ruth said, “Do not entreat me to leave you, to return from after you; for where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge, your people is my people, and your God is my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried; thus and more will the Cause do to me and if death separates me from you!” And she saw that she obstinately went with her, and refrained from speaking to her. And the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem, and it was when they came to Bethlehem that all the city murmered about it and said, “Is that Naʿomi!?” And she said to them, “Don’t call me Naʿomi! Call me Mara,[10] bitter  for Shaddai has embittered me greatly. I went full and the Cause returned me empty; why would you call me Naʿomi, when the Cause afflicted me and Shaddai harmed me?” And Naʿomi returned, with Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law, returning from the fields of Moab, and they came to Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest.

Ruth, chapter 2

And Naʿomi had a known relative on her husband’s side, quite a wealthy man from Elimelekh’s family, named Boʿaz.[11] inner strength  And Ruth the Moabite said to Naʿomi, “Please let me go to the field so I can gather in the grain, after someone in whose eyes I would find grace.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” And she went and came and gathered in the field after the harvesters, and what should happen but the portion of field was Boʿaz’s, from Elimelekh’s family! And hey, Boʿaz was coming from Bethlehem, and he said to the harvesters, ”The Cause be with you!” and they said to him, ”The Cause bless you!” And Boʿaz said to his guy overseeing the harvesters, ”Whose girl is this?” And the guy overseeing the harvesters answered and said, ”A Moabite girl is she, having returned with Naʿomi from the fields of Moab. And she said, ’Let me gather, please, and I will collect in the sheaves[12] Omers  after the harvesters,’ and she went and stood from the morning until now; barely any time has she sat in the hut.” And Boʿaz said to Ruth, ”Haven’t you heard, my daughter? Don’t go gather in another field, and don’t pass from here, but stick with my girls. Your eyes on the field they’re harvesting, and go after them; haven’t I ordered the guys not to harass you? And if you thirst, go to the jars and drink what the guys have drawn.” And she fell on her face and prostrated to the ground and said to him, ”Why have I found grace in your eyes, to recognize me though I am a foreigner?” And Boʿaz answered and said to her, ”It was told, told to me all that you did for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, that you left your father and mother and the land of your birth and went to a people that you did not know the day and days before. May the Cause repay your labor, and may your reward be complete with the Cause, God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge!” And she said, ”I have found grace in your eyes, milord, that you comforted me and spoke to the heart of your servant, though I am not even like one of your servants.” And Boʿaz said to ’er[13] Purposeful spelling, to reflect the lack of mappiq on the hei at suppertime, ”Come over here and eat fromt he bread and dip your pita in vinegar!” And she sat by the side of the harvesters, and he grabbed her some roasted grain and she ate and was sated and had leftovers. And she got up to gather, and Boʿaz commanded his guys, quote: ”Both let her gather among the sheaves without humiliating her, and pull out, pull out some from the bales and leave them for her to gather, and do not rebuke her.” And she gathered in the field until evening, and threshed what she had gathered, about an ephah[14] Around 40 liters — 10 omer  of barley. And she took and came to town and showed her mother-in-law what she had gathered and went out and gave her what was left over from her satiety. And her mother-in-law said to her, ”Where did you gather today, and to where did you work? May your recognizer be blessed!” And she told her mother-in-law what she did with him, and said, ”The name of the man with whom I worked today was Boʿaz.” And Naʿomi said to her daughter-in-law, ”Blessed be he to the Cause, who has not abandoned Their kindness to the living and the dead!” And then Naʿomi told her, ”A relative of ours is this man, from our redeemers is he!” And Ruth the Moabite said, ”Also, he said to me, ’stick with the guys that are with me, until they finish with all my harvest.’” And Naʿomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, ”It’s good, my daughter, that you go out with his girls, and not be harassed in another field.” And she stuck with Boʿaz’ girls to gather until the end of the barley-harvest and the wheat-harvest, and returned to her mother-in-law.

Ruth, chapter 3

And Naʿomi her mother-in-law said to her, ”My daughter, shouldn’t I find you rest that would be good for you? And now, isn’t Boʿaz, whose girls you were with, our known relative? And he’ll be winnowing at the barley threshing-floor tonight! So you’ll wash and make yourself up and put on your dress and go down to the threshing-floor — don’t make yourself known to the man until he’s done eating and drinking. And when he’s lying down, and you know the place where he is lying down, you’ll come and uncover his feet and lie there, and he will tell you what to do.” And she told her, ”All that you say to me[15] ”to me” is read but not written  I will do.” And she went down to the threshing-floor and did all that her mother-in-law commanded her. And Boʿaz ate and drank and felt good, and he went to sleep by the bale, and she went silently and uncovered his feet and slept. And it was at midnight, and the man shook awake and turned up,[16] A humorous translation of the hapax legomenon וַיִּלָּפֵ֑ת , which appears to have the same root as לֶפֶת (turnip).  and hey — a woman sleeping at his feet! And he said, ”Who are you?” And she said, ”I am Ruth your handmaid, and spread your cloak over your handmaid because you are a redeemer.” And he said, ”Blessed are you to the Cause, my daughter; your latest kindness is even better than your first, in not going after the young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, fear not; all that you have said I will do for you, for all my people’s gate knows that a valiant woman are you. And now, although I am[17] ”may be” is written.  a redeemer, there is also a closer redeemer than me. Lodge tonight, and come morning, if he will redeem you, good — let him redeem! But if he doesn’t want to redeem you, I myself will redeem you — as the Cause lives! Stay here until morning.” And she slept at his feet until morning, and got up before one man could recognize and other, and he said, ”Don’t let it be known that a woman came to the threshing-floor!” And he said, ”Proffer me that cloak on you, and hold it out,” and she held it out, and he measured six bits of barley, and he put it on her, and she came to the town. And she came to her mother-in-law and she said, ”Who are you? My daughter?” And she told her everything that the man did to her. And she said, ”These six bits of barley he gave me, because he said to me[18] ”to me” is read but not written  ’you shouldn’t return empty-handed to your mother-in-law.’” And she said, ”Sit, my daughter, until you know how the matter will fall, because that man will not be silent unless the matter ends today.”

Ruth, chapter 4

And Boʿaz was going up to the gate and sat there, and hey, the redeemer whom Boʿaz spoke of was passing by, and he said, ”Turn around, sit here, Ploni Almoni!”[19] So-and-so, John Doe  and he turned around and sat. And he took ten men from the town elders and said, ”Sit here,” and they sat. And he said to the redeemer, ”The portion of the field that was our brother Elimelekh’s, Naʿomi who came back from the fields of Moab is selling. And I had thought I should reveal to your ear, to say, acquire it facing the seated and facing the elders of my people. If you will redeem, redeem! But if one will not redeem, please tell me so I can know,[20] Written: ”and I will know”  because none but you can redeem and I after you,” And he said, ”I will redeem.” And Boʿaz said, ”On the day you acquire the field from Naʿomi, so too of Ruth the Moabite wife of the deceased you[21] Written: ”I”  will acquire, to raise the deceased’s name over his inheritance.” And the redeemer said, ”I cannot redeem for me, lest I ruin my inheritance. Redeem for yourself, you, my redemption, for I cannot redeem.” And this was done back then in Israel for redeeming and exchange, to fulfill any matter: a man remʿOved his shoe and gave it to his fellow, and thus was the validation in Israel. And the redeemer said to Boʿaz, ”Acquire it yourself, ” and he remʿOved his shoe. And Boʿaz said to the elders and all the people, ”Witnesses are you today that I acquired all that was Elimelekh’s and all that was Khilyon and Maḥlon’s from Naʿomi. And so too Ruth the Moabite the wife of Maḥlon I have acquired for myself as a wife, to raise the deceased’s name over his inheritance, and so the deceased’s name will not be cut off from his brothers and from the gates of his place — you are witnesses today!” And all the people in the gate and the elders said, ”We witness! May the Cause grant the wife coming into your house like Rachel and Leah who both built the house of Israel, and be mighty in Ephratha and of called name in Bethlehem! And may your house be like the house of Peretz who Tamar bore to Yehuda, from the seed that the Cause gives you from this girl!” And Boʿaz took Ruth and she was his wife, and he came onto her, and the Cause gave her pregnancy and she bore a son. And the women said to Naʿomi, ”Blessed be the Cause who has not withheld from you a redeemer today, and let his name be called in Israel! And let him renew your soul and fulfill your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you and is better to you than seven sons bore him!” And Naʿomi took the boy and held him in her lap, and became his nanny. And the neighborhood women called his name, saying, ”A son, born to Naʿomi!” and they called his name ʿOved,[22] servant  he was the father of Yishai,[23] I have  the father of David.
