Note: “The CAUSE” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.” “God” is used to translate the divine name Elohim. “The Place” is a direct translation of the divine referent, ha-Maqom. This translation also uses the plural pronouns They/Their/Them to refer to God as a pluralis majestatis, and to avoid the implications of God being assigned a gender. (Find Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Genesis 1:1 for a discussion of the pluralis majestatis when referring to God.) All divine referents (pronouns, epithets, names) are rendered in unicase.
In the cantillated text provided here, blue text is read in the Eikhah melody and red text is read in the “entrances” melody (used in Ashkenaz for vaye’ehav hamelekh and a few other verses).

Translated into German from the scroll[1] Mr. Cantor Salomon Schrecker in Mladá Boleslav discovered this Megillah, which is of interest to the history of the Bumsla Jews, in the archives. found in the Bumsla community archive by Dr. Moritz Grünwald, rabbi in Mladá Boleslav.
Stufenlied David’s.
And not just a man, but a woman, wicked, bitterer than death, whose heart is full of traps and snares;[7] Eccl. 7:26 one good before God will be saved from her with the CAUSE’s help.
And behold I wrote this as to be preserved for generations upon generations, so that a future generation might know — children yet to be born — and arise and tell their children[9] Psalms 78:6 of the great miracle that the Blessed Holy One did from the misadventures that befell[10] Cf. Talmud Bavli, Rosh haShanah 17 me. |
What happened happened thus: on Thursday, the fourth of Shevat, in the year ‘491,[11] Written as the word tetsé — “you will go out.” Equivalent to 11 January 1731 Gregorian into my shop and vault came the bookbinder’s daughter. |
And she bought plum-jam for one groschen[14] Written as “Zal,” from the Latin solidus, meaning French sou (groschen/zloty). and three cents,[15] Written as “Wiener,” literally “Viennese,” short for “Wienerpfennig” — Viennese cents and when she came to her father’s house she made cakes which are called Buchtes in the German language.
And she said that at dinnertime the bookbinder and his household who were eating with him made emesis and vomited all they ate, |
and about this two witnesses testified — the first was a smith, new in town, and the second was a beltmaker — and they made a vow that when he was at dinnertime the aforementioned eating and vomiting occurred.
But none of his household had any harm done; only the bookbinder himself was lain out on his deathbed until the sabbath day, and on that very sabbath he passed on. |
And that aforementioned girl immediately and hurriedly went to the lord burgomaster (may his glory be raised) and libelously said that he had eaten plum-jam by itself, without any additives, before she made the cakes, and there was deadly poison in the aforementioned plum-jam and from that he had died. |
And immediately the burgomaster (may his glory be raised) sent three judges and a policeman to seal up the vault and the merchandise that I had and to take me and my wife and my son Mendl to the jailhouse.
But we did not know anything of this, for I and my sons were at the synagogue for morning prayers, and after taking out the Torah scroll my wife went home and found the judgment that they had sealed up the vault and also sought to take her to prison. |
And great terror fell upon her, saying “What is this that God has done to us?[24] Genesis 42:28 We are innocent!” |
She cried with great weeping to the judges, that they should come with her, alongside her to the lord burgomaster, to know on whose account you have brought this evil, for whom and what was this done; and out of mercy the judges did this thing and went with her. |
And the burgomaster said “Such and such you did; deadly poison was in the plum-jam, and from this the bookbinder died.” |
And she cried out bitterly that it was all a lie and deception, and libelously she came to us to say “You killed the bookbinder!” and she cried but none could save her. |
And by the mercy of the highest DEITY who granted grace in the eyes of the burgomaster (may his glory be raised) and he commanded not to take us to prison, only to raise two guarantors, enough that the guarantors act as guarantors of marking whensoever the council[28] Note that in the Hebrew adjectives applying to the word “council” are sometimes declined as if it were a plural noun, an example of the syntactic looseness characteristic of Hebrew prose of the time. (may its glory be raised) would desire to raise us to the place of judgment, that we be ready and trained to come. |
And thus came the head and chief rabbi Süsskind, our holy rabbi, and the head and chief rabbi Fischel, our holy rabbi, and they were guarantors for us, as aforementioned.
And in this we were free from prison, but our vault and the store was still sealed with the seal of judgment, as aforementioned. |
And that sabbath, at around noon, came the commission of the council (may its glory be raised) — three councillors, the honored masters Mr. Wagner and Mr. Scherkis and Mr. Böhm, the field-surgeon and the land-inspector and even the doctor (may his glory be raised), and Mr. Lipovsky the town clerk, experts in surgery, to cut open the bookbinder and see and check if he died from the force of any deadly poison or another ailment. |
And they checked with seven investigations and inquiries and found no sign of the poison; they only found one ruptured artery. |
And all the experts, the aforementioned doctor and barber-surgeon, agreed that he had some ailment of the lung, and from the force of the great and powerful vomiting that artery had ruptured, and from the force of this he died. |
And after this, at the time of afternoon prayers, the aforementioned commission, with the apothecary, and also sent after Rabbi Shmuel Borjes, scribe and judge here in Bumsla, at evening-time, that he would go with them to open my vault so they may be free of suspicion. |
And thus they searched all the caskets with spices that I had, and the rest of the merchandise, inquiry after inquiry, to search and see if they found there among the merchandise any deadly poison or not, and searched and found no poison whatsoever. |
And the aforementioned bookbinder’s daughter was also there, and the specific cast of plum-jam from which she bought still stood in the vault, and she testified before the aforementioned commission that that was the barrel from which she bought my plum-jam. |
And immediately and hurriedly before the aforementioned commission I and my son Rabbi Meir (God save him!) took and ate of the plum-jam, so they would see that this evil did not come out from with us.
And on Sunday, the day after the sabbath, I went by the lord burgomaster (may his glory be raised) and spoke with him heartfelt words, as he saw that we were right and true, and I asked to open our vault so as not to discriminate against our income and livelihood, |
and specifically that we had such good aforementioned guarantors, and all was given with guarantee, and the net should be spread, and the store be open, and the shopkeeper go on his rounds. |
Thus he ordered the judge that the aforementioned seal be undone. |

And when the aforementioned bookbinder’s daughter saw that her scheme would not come about — for she thought we would be forced to pay her a great sum for her aforementioned father, but such things were unheard of by the council (may its glory be raised) — |
thus the aforementioned bookbinder’s daughter went to Prague[57] In the German, but not the Hebrew, is added “on Tuesday, the ninth of Shevat, after her father’s funeral” and gave power of attorney to the lawyer Schabner that he should go and judge this matter by the court of appeals (may its glory be raised).
Dieser verfaßte ein Memorial an das Appellationsgericht, |
And the aforementioned lawyer gave a memorandum to the court of appeals (may its glory be raised), of which really nothing like it had ever been heard or seen before.
He thought to take life for life, as if we had purposely put poison in the aforementioned plum-jam. |
And not just that, but written in the aforementioned memorandum was that the bookbinder was not the first who died by our hands, but another one had already long since died by our hands on account of deadly poison. |
And he also wrote of the council (may its glory be raised) that they were lie-smearers and false-doctors[65] Job 13:4 and have withdrawn their hands from this matter so as not to do diligent justice.

And lo, the court of appeals (may its glory be raised) sent out a decree to the council (may its glory be raised): immediately and hurriedly upon seeing the writ they should take us to prison and close and seal the vault, and they also sent an examination to the council (may its glory be raised) of what they would investigate and seek out. |

Centralbl. 1888 S. 7982. |
David, the author of the megillah, probably received the name Brandeis from his birthplace. In Bohemia there are two places called Brandeis — one is Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav, and the second is Brandýs nad Orlicí. It is also possible that his wife came from a Brandeis family and that he subsequently took this name. We find a Levitical family of this name in Prague as early as the second half of the 16th century. Rabbi Meir son of Yosef Brandeis, community leader, died in 1600 (Galed p. 727). From this megillah we now learn that our David had two sons, one of whom was named Mendel and the second Meir; Mendl Brandeis had a son named Feysch (Phoebus) who, according to the meeting-book of the elders of Bumsla Jewish community from 1781 to 1785, was mayor of the Jewish community of the Bumsla district; Meir Brandeis had a son Loebl or Loeb B., who, according to the same meeting-book, was an inspector for Jewish tax matters in 1781.
Jungbunzlau, 19. October 1781. • Löbl Brandeis; Hereschel Porchig — Inspectores. • Abraham Korbin; Majer Aberham — als Koscheraten. • Abraham Levy — Contribuent. |
The following decree is communicated here: If, at the held meeting, the kosher slaughterers and butchers were appointed, and at that time no better ones who would provide a larger quantity were found, then one proceeded with Aberham Nordin and Meier Aberham as kosher butchers, so that they committed themselves to receive, for providing kosher meat from November 1, 1781, until the end of October 1782, the sum of 56 kreuzer. Mladá Boleslav, 19 October 1781. • Loebl Brandeis; Herschel Porchig — inspectors. • Abraham Korbin; Majer Aberham — kosher butchers. • Abraham Levy — contributor.
Loeb Brandeis, in turn, had a son named David Hirsch, who in 1811 gave the local community an ark-curtain that is still magnificent today and, three years later, an ark-valance. His wife was called Rela and was a daughter of R. Wolf Pick from Hořice-Ostroměř in Bohemia.
David Hirsch Brandeis was the last male descendant of this family, and until his death, this Megillah was read and celebrated annually on the 10th of Adar in the family home, with a banquet attended by all family members and the rabbi. The family’s historically verifiable lineage would be as follows:

The aforementioned Rabbi Süsskind was the son of Rabbi Jakob Primas, who in 1700 was the leader of the Jewish community of the Bumsla district. Rabbi Jakob Primas himself was the son of Rabbi Süsskind and in 1703 presented a mantle for a Torah scroll. The inscription reveals that Rabbi Jakob’s wife was named Serl, daughter of Rabbi Isserle. |
This megillah was transcribed as originally published in Magazin für die Wissenschaft des Judenthums, vol. 15, 1888, with unvocalized Hebrew (pp. 3-5) and German translation by Rabbi Moritz Grünwald (pp. 191-196). Vocalized and cantillated Hebrew, English translation, transcribers notes, and other annotation added by Isaac Gantwerk Mayer.
