📜 פָּרָשַׁת תְּצַוֶּה | Parashat T’tsavveh (Exodus 27:20-30:10), color-coded according to its narrative layers

According to the poetry of the Midrash Tanḥuma, Bereshit 1:1, the words of the Torah were inscribed “black fire on white fire.” For many years, I’ve wanted to look deeply into the black fire and visualize the full spectrum of the Torah’s sources, hidden within the black fire but revealed through a critical analysis of its layers of redaction. Below, I’ve set the text of the Torah portion in the annual Torah reading cycle, using color-coding to distinguish the stratigraphic layers forming the composition of the Masoretic text according to the Supplementary Hypothesis presented by Tsemaḥ Yoreh in his Kernel to Canon series of books (2013-2017) and his website, the Sources of Biblical Narrative. As Dr. Yoreh explains,

The Supplementary Hypothesis asserts that the Pentateuch was composed by several different writers. This reflects an overwhelming academic consensus on Biblical authorship, even among scholars who do not subscribe to the Supplementary Hypothesis in particular.[….] According to the Supplementary Hypothesis, Biblical narrative is layered. No editor took a blowtorch to the parts of the Bible he disagreed with and destroyed them; if he had, we would not find these repetitions and contradictions. Instead, Biblical narrative began with a coherent, foundational bedrock, which over time accreted more and more storylines. Unlike geological processes, though, this process of addition was deliberate. What happened if one author disagreed with his predecessor’s storyline or worldview? He did not simply take an axe to the narrative; instead, he attempted to bury his predecessor’s point of view by repeating his own over and over again, thus skewing our understanding of the story in new ways. Every generation of readers sees the world differently, and thus every generation of writers seeks to adapt their predecessors’ cultural heritage to their own situation. We are not meant simply to dismiss earlier stories; rather, the intention of later writers is to transform our understanding of those stories via their additions.

Legend

⬛ The kernel of biblical text upon which all other narratives were laid is thought to have been composed in the mid- to late eighth century BCE toward the end of the heyday of the northern Kingdom of Ephraim (one of the two kingdoms that occupied Biblical Israel). This layer, commonly referred to as ‘E’, is indicated with INDIGO text. The first parashah containing text of this layer was parashat Vayera in Sefer Bereshit.

⬛ The next oldest layer is thought to have been composed in the late 8th or early 7th century BCE in the southern Kingdom of Judah. This layer, commonly known as ‘J’, is indicated with a BLUE text.

⬛ This strata, thought to have been composed during the exilic to early post-exilic period (571–486 BCE) is, as Dr. Yoreh explains, “responsible for supplementing the ‘J’ narrative with dates, names, and numbers, thus ‘ordering’ and authenticating ‘J’s account.” This layer, commonly referred to as ‘P’ (for ‘Priestly’) appears here in GREEN text.

⬛ The next strata popularized Kohanite law for the remnant of Judah after the Temple was destroyed, and functioned as an intermediary between Kohanite lists and laws and the surrounding narrative. This layer, which Dr. Yoreh calls ‘H’ (for the ‘Holiness Code’) appears here in LIME-GREEN text.

⬛ The most recent layer of text, is a post-exilic (pre-3rd century BCE) text that Dr. Yoreh refers to as the “Bridger” which supplements earlier strata with genealogies and popular myths, providing narrative bridges between distant story cycles. This ‘B’ layer is presented here in FUCHSIA.

The kernel of biblical text ‘E,’ its early supplemental layer ‘J’, and its later supplement ‘B,’ are absent from this parashah.

Parashat T’tsavveh (Exodus 27:20-30:10) in the annual Torah reading cycle, is read on the second shabbat of the month of Adar (or Adar Alef in a Jewish leap year). The parashah is preceded by parashat Terumah (Exodus 25:1-27:19); parashat Ki Tissa (Exodus 30:11-34:35) follows it.

27 20 Now you, command the Children of Yisrael, that they may fetch you oil of olives, clear, beaten, for the light, to draw up a lampwick/Ner, regularly (tamid). 21 In the Tent of Appointment/Ohel Mo’ed, outside the Parokhet that is over the Testimony, Aharon and his sons are to arrange it, from sunset until daybreak before the presence of YHVH — a law for the ages, throughout your generations, on the part of the Children of Yisrael.[1] The construction of the tabernacle was concluded in 27:19. 27:20-21, which detail the construction of an additional vessel, are out of place, since the description of the vessels was concluded in Chapter 25. Moreover vs. 21 alludes to the future investment of Aharon and his sons as priests which will only occur in Chapter 28 (these verses serve as kind of a bridge between the construction of the Tabernacle and the investment of Aharon and his sons). Finally, the idea of an eternal statute is H’s. H takes priestly laws that were for a specific time and specific group and makes them relevant for the larger community in perpetuity.

28 1 Now you: have come-near to you Aharon your brother[2] The command to bring Aharon did not originally include his sons, as is evident from the continuation of the verse which is phrased in the singular.  and his sons with him,[3] H adds Aharon’s sons in order to solidify their standing in the hereditary priesthood. Their clothes and their role in the investment of Aharon is an H elaboration.  from amidst the Children of Yisrael, to be-priests for me;[4] See initial comment on this verse (Exodus 28:1). Note the singular which refers only to Aharon.  Aharon, Nadav and Avihu, Elazar and Itamar, the sons of Aharon.[5] See previous comments.  2 You are to make garments of holiness for Aharon your brother, for glory and for splendor.[6] Note that the command to make the garments is also in the singular addressed to Moses. Subsequent commands in the plural to unknown craftsmen are a sign of editorial intervention.  3 So you, speak to each who is wise of mind whom I have filled with the spirit of practical-wisdom, that they may make Aharon’s garments, to hallow him, to be-priest for me. 4 And these are the garments that they are to make: breastpiece/ḥoshen and éfōd and tunic, braided coat, wound-turban and sash. So they are to make garments of holiness for Aharon your brother and for his sons, to be-priests for me. 5 And they, they are to take gold, blue-violet, purple, worm-scarlet and byssus.[7] The singular command to weave the garments is qualified here. H involves multiple unknown craftsmen in the project, making the endeavor more democratic. Many of the commands to manufacture the garments are still in the singular.

Aharon is to bear their names before the presence of YHVH on his two shoulders, for remembrance.

15 You are to make the Breastpiece of Judgment/Ḥoshen Mishpat of designer’s making, like the making of the éfōd are you to make it, of gold, of blue-violet, of purple, of worm-scarlet and of twisted byssus are you to make it. 16 Square it is to be, doubled-over, a span its length and a span its width. 17 You are to set-it-full with a setting of stones, four rows of stones — a row of carnelian, topaz and sparkling-emerald, the first row, 18 the second row: ruby, sapphire, and hard-onyx, 19 the third row: jacinth, agate, and amethyst, 20 the fourth row: beryl, onyx, and jasper. Braided with gold are they to be in their settings. 21 And the stones are to be with the names of the Children of Yisrael, twelve with their names, (with) signet engravings, each-one with its name, are they to be, for the twelve tribes. 22 You are to make, on the Ḥoshen, laced chains, of rope making, of pure gold; 23 and you are to make, on the Ḥoshen, two rings of gold; you are to put the two rings on the two ends of the Ḥoshen. 24 And you are to put the two ropes of gold on the two rings at the ends of the Ḥoshen; 25 and the two ends of the two ropes, you are to put on the two braids and you are to put them on the shoulder-piece of the éfōd, facing frontward. 26 You are to make two rings of gold, and are to place them on the two ends of the Ḥoshen, on its edge, which is across from the éfōd, inward, 27 and you are to make two rings of gold, and are to put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the éfōd, below, facing frontward, parallel to its joint, above the designed-band of the éfōd. 28 They are to tie the Ḥoshen from its rings to the rings of the éfōd with a thread of blue-violet, to be (fixed) on the designed-band of the éfōd; the Ḥoshen is not to slip from the éfōd. 29 So Aharon is to bear the names of the Children of Yisrael on the Ḥoshen Mishpat over his heart, whenever he comes into the Holy-shrine for remembrance, before the presence of YHVH, regularly.[10] There is disagreement between P and H, with regard to the cultic objects upon the Ephod. According to P, in vss. 30-32, the urim and thumim, two divination stones, were placed there. Whereas according to H, twelve precious stones were placed on the breast plate in four rows (vss. 16-29).  30 And you are to put in the Ḥoshen Mishpat the Urim and the Tummim, that they may be over Aharon’s heart, whenever he comes before the presence of YHVH. So Aharon is to bear the Ḥoshen Mishpat for the Children of Yisrael over his heart before the presence of YHVH, regularly.

An allusion is made to Aharon’s job as collector of all holy gifts, a theme which is elaborated upon in H’s Leviticus 27.

So Aharon is to bear the iniquity of the holy-offerings that the Children of Yisrael offer-as-holy, all their gifts of holiness; it is to be on his brow regularly, for (receiving) favor for them, before the presence of YHVH. 39 You are to braid the coat with byssus; you are to make a turban of byssus, and a sash you are to make, of embroiderer’s making.[13] Note that Aharon’s clothes are described succinctly in P, but are more elaborate in the canonical text which includes H.

40 And for the sons of Aharon, you are to make coats, you are to make them sashes and caps you are to make for them, for glory and for splendor. 41 You are to clothe in them Aharon your brother, and his sons with him, you are to anoint them, you are to give-mandate to them, and you are to hallow them, that they may be-priests for me. 42 You are to make them breeches of linen to cover the flesh of nakedness; from the hips to the thighs are they to extend. 43 They are to be on Aharon and on his sons, whenever they come into the Ohel Mo’ed or whenever they approach the Mizbe’aḥ to attend at the Holy-shrine, that they do not bear iniquity and die — a law for the ages, for him and for his seed after him.[14] Once again Aharon’s sons are included in the investment, so as to entrench their hereditary hierarchy in the Pentateuch.

29 1 Now this is the ceremony that you are to make for them to hallow them, to be-priests for me: Take a bull, a young-one of the herd, and rams, two, wholly-sound, 2 and bread of matsah and flat cakes of matsah, mixed with oil, and wafers of matsah, dipped in oil, of wheat flour are you to make them. 3 You are to put them in one basket and are to bring-them-near in the basket, along with the bull and along with the two rams. 4 And Aharon and his two sons you are to bring-near to the entrance of the Ohel Mo’ed and are to wash them with water. 5 You are to take the garments and are to clothe Aharon — in the coat, in the tunic of the éfōd, in the éfōd and in the Ḥoshen; you are to invest him in the designed-band of the éfōd, 6 you are to place the turban on his head, and are to put the sacred-diadem of holiness on the turban. 7 You are to take the oil for anointing and are to pour it on his head, anointing him. 8 And his sons, you are to bring-near and are to clothe them in coats; 9 you are to gird them with a sash, Aharon and his sons, and are to wind caps for them. It shall be for them as priestly-right, a law for the ages. So you are to give-mandate to Aharon and to his sons:

26 You are to take the breast from the ram of giving-mandate that is Aharon’s, and you are to elevate it as an elevation-offering, in the presence of YHVH, that it may be an allotment for you. 27 So you are to hallow the breast for the elevation-offering, and the thigh of the raised-contribution, that is elevated, that is raised from the ram of giving-mandate, from what is Aharon’s and from what is his sons’. 28 It is to be Aharon’s and his sons’, a fixed-allocation for the ages, on the part of the Children of Yisrael, for it is a contribution, and a contribution is it to be on the part of the Children of Yisrael, from their slaughter-offerings of shalom, their raised-contribution for YHVH.[15] The whole sacrificial ritual which serves to invest Aharon and his sons’ priesthood (repeated almost word for word in Leviticus 8-9) is H’s very lengthy elaboration of the simple Priestly command in vss. 29-30, which legislates that Aharon’s clothes shall be transferred to his children after a seven day ritual. H’s elaboration involving Aharon’s sons serves to entrench the Aharonite priesthood in the Pentateuch (Aharon is consecrated on his own according to P). Note also that sacrifices are not legislated until Leviticus 1-7, and so the sacrificial element of this ritual is out of place.

29 Now the garments of holiness that are Aharon’s are to belong to his sons after him, to anoint them in them and to give-them-mandate in them. 30 For seven days is the one of his sons that acts-as-priest in his stead to be clothed in them, the one who comes into the Ohel Mo’ed to attend at the Holy-shrine.[16] See previous comment. In an abrupt shift from the sacrifices of the previous section, these two verses focus on the transfer of the Priestly clothes and are the precursor to the elaborate ritual constructed by H in this chapter.  31 And the ram for giving-mandate you are to take and are to boil its flesh in the Holy-shrine. 32 Aharon and his sons are to eat the flesh of the ram, along with the bread that is in the basket, at the entrance of the Ohel Mo’ed. 33 They are to eat them — those who are purged by them, to give-them-mandate, to hallow them; an outsider is not to eat (them), for they are holiness. 34 Now if there be anything left over of the flesh of giving-mandate or of the bread in the morning, you are to burn what is left by fire, it is not to be eaten, for it is holiness.

35 You are to make (thus) for Aharon and for his sons, according to all that I have commanded you, for seven days, you are to give-them-mandate. 36 A bull for the ḥattat-offering, you are to make-ready for each day, concerning the purging, that you may decontaminate the Mizbe’aḥ, by your purging it, and you are to anoint it, to hallow it. 37 For seven days you are to purge the Mizbe’aḥ, that you may hallow it. Thus the Mizbe’aḥ will become holiest holiness; whatever touches the Mizbe’aḥ shall become-holy.

38 And this is what you are to sacrifice on the Mizbe’aḥ: year-old lambs, two for each day, regularly. 39 The first lamb you are to sacrifice at daybreak, and the second lamb you are to sacrifice between the setting-times. 40 A tenth-measure of fine-meal, mixed with beaten oil, a quarter of a hin, and (as) poured-offering, a quarter of a hin of wine — for the first lamb. 41 And the second lamb you are to sacrifice between the setting-times, like the grain-gift of morning, and like its poured-offering, (that) you make-ready for it, for a soothing savor, a fire-offering for YHVH; 42 a regular offering-up, throughout your generations, at the entrance to the Ohel Mo’ed, before the presence of YHVH; for I will appoint-meeting with you there, to speak to you there. 43 So I will appoint-meeting there with the Children of Yisrael, and it will be hallowed by my Kavod. 44 I will hallow the Ohel Mo’ed and the altar, and Aharon and his sons I will hallow, to be-priests for me. 45 And I will dwell amidst the Children of Yisrael and I will be an elohim for them, 46 that they may know that I am YHVH their elo’ah who brought them out of the land of Mitsrayim to dwell, myself, in their midst, I am YHVH their elo’ah.[17] The final verses of the chapter are a complete non-sequitor to the investment, and focus on daily sacrifices, legislation which is completely out of place. This section does, however, function as a lead in for the construction of the incense altar at the beginning of Chapter 30. Note the use of H, linguistic / ideological markers, such as “I am YHVH their God” in vs. 46, and “throughout your generations” in vs. 42.

30 1 You are to make a Mizbe’aḥ, a smoking (site) for smoking-incense, of acacia wood are you to make it, 2 a cubit its length and a cubit its width; square is it to be, and two cubits its height, its horns from it. 3 You are to overlay it with pure gold — its roof, its walls all around, and its horns, and you are to make a rim of gold all around. 4 And two rings of gold you are to make for it, beneath its rim, on its two flanks, you are to make (them) on its two sides, that they may be for holders for poles, to carry it by (means of) them. 5 You are to make the poles of acacia wood and you are to overlay them with gold. 6 And you are to put it in front of the Parokhet that is over the Arōn of Testimony, in front of the Kaporet that is over the Testimony, where I will appoint-meeting with you. 7 And Aharon is to send-up-in-smoke, fragrant smoking-incense on it, in the morning, (every) morning; when he polishes the lamps, he is to send-it-up-in-smoke. 8 And when Aharon draws up the lampwicks, between the setting-times, he is to send-it-up-in-smoke, a regular smoke-offering before the presence of YHVH, throughout your generations. 9 You are not to offer-up upon it any outsider’s smoking-incense, either as offering-up or as grain-gift, nor are you to pour out any poured-offering upon it. 10 Aharon is to do-the-purging upon its horns, once a year, with the decontaminating blood of purgation (atonement); once a year he is to do-the-purging upon it, throughout your generations, holiest holiness it is for YHVH.[18] The construction of this second incense altar is out of place. Most of the other cultic object were constructed in Chapter 25-26. It thus seems likely that this altar and the instructions in vss. 34-38 regarding the preparation of the incense, were inserted here by H. With this addition, H sets the stage for the drama enacted in Numbers 16, where Aharon alone is allowed to offer incense before the Lord, and Korach and his fellows conspirers die in a fire. The pans that Korach and his fellows used to burn incense were then melted and used as a coating for the altar, likely the same altar the Lord commands Aharon to build in this chapter.

The Masoretic text presented here is from Rabbi Dr. Seth (Avi) Kadish’s Miqra al pi ha-Mesorah. For the translation in English, I have adapted the translation of Everett Fox in the Schocken Bible (Everett Fox 1995), mostly to re-Hebraize divine names, place names, and personal names. As with the last parashah (Terumah), I have been careful to Hebraize the Mishkan and its main sacred objects. Aside from these, I have made minor punctuation changes. Notes
1The construction of the tabernacle was concluded in 27:19. 27:20-21, which detail the construction of an additional vessel, are out of place, since the description of the vessels was concluded in Chapter 25.
2The command to bring Aharon did not originally include his sons, as is evident from the continuation of the verse which is phrased in the singular.
3H adds Aharon’s sons in order to solidify their standing in the hereditary priesthood. Their clothes and their role in the investment of Aharon is an H elaboration.
4See initial comment on this verse (Exodus 28:1). Note the singular which refers only to Aharon.
5See previous comments.
6Note that the command to make the garments is also in the singular addressed to Moses. Subsequent commands in the plural to unknown craftsmen are a sign of editorial intervention.
7The singular command to weave the garments is qualified here. H involves multiple unknown craftsmen in the project, making the endeavor more democratic. Many of the commands to manufacture the garments are still in the singular.
8I believe that the plural marker of the first verb in this verse may be in error. The rest of the commands to construct the ephod are all in the singular.

10There is disagreement between P and H, with regard to the cultic objects upon the Ephod. According to P, in vss. 30-32, the urim and thumim, two divination stones, were placed there. Whereas according to H, twelve precious stones were placed on the breast plate in four rows (vss. 16-29).
11See previous comment.
12In this section, H warns of Aharon’s possible death if he comes before YHVH at the wrong time, a familiar trōp in H, and see the commentary to Chapter 30, regarding the duplication of the anointing oil and the incense. An allusion is made to Aharon’s job as collector of all holy gifts, a theme which is elaborated upon in H’s Leviticus 27.
13Note that Aharon’s clothes are described succinctly in P, but are more elaborate in the canonical text which includes H.
14Once again Aharon’s sons are included in the investment, so as to entrench their hereditary hierarchy in the Pentateuch.
15The whole sacrificial ritual which serves to invest Aharon and his sons’ priesthood (repeated almost word for word in Leviticus 8-9) is H’s very lengthy elaboration of the simple Priestly command in vss.
16See previous comment. In an abrupt shift from the sacrifices of the previous section, these two verses focus on the transfer of the Priestly clothes and are the precursor to the elaborate ritual constructed by H in this chapter.
17The final verses of the chapter are a complete non-sequitor to the investment, and focus on daily sacrifices, legislation which is completely out of place. This section does, however, function as a lead in for the construction of the incense altar at the beginning of Chapter 30. Note the use of H, linguistic / ideological markers, such as “I am YHVH their God” in vs. 46, and “throughout your generations” in vs. 42.
