	Wenn drei Erwachsene beisammen sind, so beginnt der Sprecher:
רַבּוֹתַי מיר וועלן בענטשן	Meine Herrn, wir wollen danken
	Und die andern antworten:
יְהִ֤י שֵׁ֣ם יְיָ מְבֹרָ֑ךְ מֵֽ֝עַתָּ֗ה וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם׃ (תהלים קיג:ב)	Sei Gottes Name gelobt von nun auf ewig.
	Darauf der Sprecher, nachdem er die Untwort wiederholt hat
בִּרְשׁוּת רַבּוֹתַי ∞ נְבָרֵךְ (אֱלֹהֵינוּ) שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ מִשֵּׁלוֹ.	Auf Beschluß der Herrn ∞ Wir wollen loben, aus des Vorrat wir gespeist.
	Und die andern
בָּרוּךְ (אֱלֹהֵינוּ) שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ מִשֵּׁלוֹ וּבְטוּבוֹ חָיִינוּ.	Lob ihm, aus des Vorrat wir gespeist Und von dessen Gut wir leben.
	Was der Sprecher wiederholt und fortfährt:
בָּרוּךְ הוּא וּבָרוּךְ שְׁמוֹ.	Lob Ihm, seinem Namen Lob.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם הַזָּן אֶת הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ בְּטוּבוֹ בְּחֵן בְּחֶֽסֶד וּבְרַחֲמִים הוּא נֹתֵ֣ן לֶ֭חֶם לְכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ (תהלים קלו:כה) וּבְטוּבוֹ הַגָּדוֹל תָּמִיד לֹא חָסַר לָֽנוּ וְאַל יֶחְסַר לָֽנוּ מָזוֹן לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד בַּעֲבוּר שְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹל: כִּי הוּא זָן וּמְפַרְנֵס לַכֹּל וּמֵטִיב לַכֹּל וּמֵכִין מָזוֹן לְכָל בְּרִיּוֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ הַזָּן אֶת הַכֹּל. Und aus seiner großen Güte Mangelte nimmer noch mangelt uns Speise zu jeglicher Zeit, Um seines Namens Größe. Denn er speist und pflegt alle Welt, Tut wohl aller Welte, Und richtet Speise allem Geschöpf, Das Er erschuf. Lob drum, ja Lob dir o Gott, der speist das All.
נוֹדֶה לְּךָ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ עַל שֶׁהִנְחַֽלְתָּ לַאֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ אֶֽרֶץ חֶמְדָה טוֹבָה וּרְחָבָה וְעַל שֶׁהוֹצֵאתָֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֵאֶֽרֶץ מִצְרַֽים וּפְדִיתָֽנוּ מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים וְעַל בְּרִיתְךָ שֶׁחָתַֽמְתָּ בִּבְשָׂרֵֽנוּ וְעַל תּוֹרָתְךָ שֶׁלִּמַּדְתָּֽנוּ וְעַל חֻקֵּֽיךָ שֶׁהוֹדַעְתָּֽנוּ וְעַל חַיִּים חֵן וָחֶֽסֶד שֶׁחוֹנַנְתָּֽנוּ וְעַל אֲכִילַת מָזוֹן שָׁאַתָּה זָן וּמְפַרְנֵס אוֹתָֽנוּ תָּמִיד בְּכָל יוֹם וּבְכָל עֵת וּבְכָל שָׁעָה.	So danken wir dir, Gott unser Gott, Daß du beschieden unsern Vätern Land schön, fruchtbar, weit, Und heraus uns geführt, Gott unser Gott, aus Agyptenland, Und uns erlöst aus dem Diensthaus, Und für den Bund, den ins Fleisch du uns prägtest, Und für dein Gesetz, das du uns lehrtest, Und für deine Ordnung, die du uns kundtatst, Und für dein Leben, deine Liebe, deine Güte, uns vergönnt, Und für den Tisch, den du uns deckst. Und bist unser Pfleger immerfort, Jeden Tag, allzeit, alle Stunde.
	An Chanukka und Purim fügt man hier ein:
וְעַל הַנִּסִּים וְעַל הַפֻּרְקָן וְעַל הַגְּבוּרוֹת וְעַל הַתְּשׁוּעוֹת וְעַל הַנֶּחָמוֹת שֶׁעָשִׂיתָ לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה׃	Und für die Zeichen Und für das Zeil und die großen Taten Und die Errettungen und die Schlachten Von dir gewirkt für unsre Väter In jenen Tagen um diese Zeit
	An Chanukka fährt man fort:
בִּימֵי מַתִּתְיָֽהוּ בֶּן יוֹחָנָן כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל, חַשְׁמֹנַי וּבָנָיו, כְּשֶׁעָמְדָה מַלְכוּת יָוָן הָרְשָׁעָה, עַל עַמְּךָ יִשְֹרָאֵל, לְהַשְׁכִּיחָם תּוֹרָתֶֽךָ וּלְהַעֲבִירָם מֵחֻקֵּי רְצוֹנֶֽךָ׃	In den Tagen Mattathias’, Sohn Jochhanans, Hohenpriesters, Hasmonders, und seiner Söhne, Als da stand das Reich der Griechen, das böse, wider dein Volk Israel, Es vergessen zu machen deiner Lehre und es zu verführen von der Sazung, der du hold bißt.
וְאַתָּה בְּרַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים, עָמַדְתָּ לָהֶם בְּעֵת צָרָתָם. רַֽבְתָּ אֶת רִיבָם, דַֽנְתָּ אֶת דִּינָם, נָקַֽמְתָּ אֶת נִקְמָתָם׃ מָסַֽרְתָּ גִבּוֹרִים בְּיַד חַלָּשִׁים, וְרַבִּים בְּיַד מְעַטִּים, וּטְמֵאִים בְּיַד טְהוֹרִים, וּרְשָׁעִים בְּיַד צַדִּיקִים, וְזֵדִים בְּיַד עוֹסְקֵי תוֹרָתֶֽךָ׃ וּלְךָ עָשִֹֽיתָ שֵׁם גָּדוֹל וְקָדוֹשׁ בְּעוֹלָמֶֽךָ, וּלְעַמְּךָ יִשְֹרָאֵל עָשִֹֽיתָ תְּשׁוּעָה גְדוֹלָה וּפֻרְקָן כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה: וְאַֽחַר כַּךְ בָּֽאוּ בָנֶֽיךָ לִדְבִיר בֵּיתֶֽךָ, וּפִנּוּ אֶת הֵיכָלֶֽךָ, וְטִהֲרוּ אֶת מִקְדָּשֶֽׁךָ, וְהִדְלִֽיקוּ נֵרוֹת בְּחַצְרוֹת קָדְשֶֽׁךָ. וְקָבְעוּ שְׁמוֺנַת יְמֵי חֲנֻכָּה אֵֽלּוּ, לְהוֹדוֹת לְהַלֵּל לְשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל.	Aber du in deiner Liebe, der großen, du standest bei ihnen zur Zeit ihrer Not, Strittest ihren Streit, sprachest ihren Spruch, vergaltst ihr Vergelten. Beugtest Gewaltige unter Schwache, Viele unter Wenige, Unreine unter Reine, Böse unter Gute, Frevler unter Wahrer deines Worts. Und machtest dir einen Namen groß und heilig in deiner Welt, Und deinem Volk Israel brachtest du großen Sieg und Erlösung auf diesen Tag. Und alsobald kamen deine Kinder vor das Innre deines hauses, Fegten deine Halle, reinigten dein Heiligtum, Entzündeten Lichter in den Höfen deines Tempels Und sezten diese acht Tage der Weihe Zu Dank und Lob deinem Viamen, dem großen.
	An Purim fährt man fort:
בִּימֵי מָרְדֳּכַי וְאֶסְתֵּר בְּשׁוּשַׁן הַבִּירָה, כְּשֶׁעָמַד עֲלֵיהֶם הָמָן הָרָשָׁע, בִּקֵּשׁ לְהַשְׁמִ֡יד לַֽהֲרֹ֣ג וּלְאַבֵּ֣ד אֶת־כָּל־הַ֠יְּהוּדִים מִנַּ֨עַר וְעַד־זָקֵ֨ן טַ֤ף וְנָשִׁים֙ בְּי֣וֹם אֶחָ֔ד בִּ‎שְׁלוֹשָׁ֥ה עָשָׂ֛ר לְחֹ֥דֶשׁ שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֖ר הוּא־חֹ֣דֶשׁ אֲדָ֑ר וּשְׁלָלָ֖ם לָבֽוֹז׃ (אסתר ג:יג)	In den Tagen Mardochais und Esthers, in Susa der Hauptstadt, Als da stand wider sie Haman der Böse, Trachtend zu vertilgen, zu morden, zu verderben alle Juden insgesamt, Von Jung bis Alt, Kinder und Frauen, an Einem Tag, Am dreizehnten im zwölften Monat, im Monat Adar, Und ihr Gut zu rauben.
וְאַתָּה בְּרַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים הֵפַֽרְתָּ אֶת עֲצָתוֹ, וְקִלְקַלְתָּ אֶת מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹ, וַהֲשֵׁבֽוֹתָ לּוֹ גְּמוּלוֹ בְרֹאשׁוֹ. וְתָלוּ אוֹתוֹ וְאֶת בָּנָיו עַל הָעֵץ.‏	Aber du in deiner Liebe, der großen, Zerrissest seinen Rat, Dutchkreuztest sein Rechnen, Rückwandtest sein Werk auf sein Haupt: Da hing er mit seinen Söhnen am Holz.
וְעַל הַכֹּל יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ אֲנַחְנוּ מוֹדִים לָךְ וּמְבָרֲכִים אוֹתָךְ יִתְבָּרַךְ שִׁמְךָ בְּפִי כָל חַי תָּמִיד לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד׃	Und für dies all, Gott unser Gott, Danken wir dir Und loben dich, Es lobt deinen Namen alles Lebens Mund, Immer immer auf ewig. * * *
כַּכָּתוּב: וְאָֽכַלְתָּ֖ וְשָׂבָ֑עְתָּ וּבֵֽרַכְתָּ֙ אֶת־יְיָ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ עַל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַטֹּבָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָֽתַן־לָֽךְ׃ (דברים ח:י) בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ עַל הָאָֽרֶץ וְעַל הַמָּזוֹן.	So steht es: „und wirst essen „und satt sein „und loben „den Herrn, deinen Gott, „um den guten Boden, den Er dir gab. Lob drum, ja Lob dir o Gott Um den Boden und um die Nabrung
רַחֵם יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל יִשְׂרָאֵל עַמֶּךָ וְעַל יְרוּשָׁלַֽםִ עִירֶֽךָ וְעַל צִיּוֹן מִשְׁכַּן כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ וְעַל מַלְכוּת בֵּית דָּוִד מְשִׁיחֶֽךָ וְעַל הַבַּֽיִת הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁנִּקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלָיו׃	So erbarm dich, Gott unser Gott, Ob deines Volkes Israel Und ob deiner Stadt Jerusalem Und ob Ẓions, Stätte deiner Herrlichkeit, Und ob Davids deines Gesalbten Keichs Und ob des Hauses, des großen, des heiligen, Darüber dein Name hinhallt.
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ אָבִֽינוּ רְעֵֽנוּ [בשבת: רוֹעֵנוּ] זוּנֵֽנוּ פַרְנְסֵֽנוּ וְכַלְכְּלֵֽנוּ וְהַרְוִיחֵֽנוּ וְהַרְוַח לָֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מְהֵרָה מִכָּל צָרוֹתֵֽינוּ	Unser Gott, unser Vater, du uns weide, du uns speise du uns pflege, du uns nähre, uns befreie — Ja mach frei uns, Gott unser Gott, Bald von all unsern Nöten.
וְנָא אַל תַּצְרִיכֵֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ לֹא לִידֵי מַתְּנַת בָּשָׂר וָדָם וְלֹא לִידֵי הַלְוָאָתָם כִּי אִם לְיָדְךָ הַמְּלֵאָה הַפְּתוּחָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה וְהָרְחָבָה שֶׁלֹּא נֵבוֹשׁ וְלֹא נִכָּלֵם לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד.	Und ach, laß uns nicht darben, Gott unser Gott, Nach Gabe aus Sänden von Fleich und Blut Und nicht nach borgenden Händen, Nein, allein nach der deinen, der gefüllten, der offnen der heil’gen, der reichen. So ersparst du uns das Zehren der Scham Immer, auf ewig.
	Am Sabbat schaltet man hier ein:
רְצֵה וְהַחֲלִיצֵֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ בְּמִצְוֺתֶֽיךָ וּבְמִצְוַת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי הַשַּׁבָּת הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה. כִּי יוֹם זֶה גָּדוֹל וְקָדוֹשׁ הוּא לְפָנֶֽיךָ לִשְׁבָּת בּוֹ וְלָנֽוּחַ בּוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה כְּמִצְוַת רְצוֹנֶךָ. בִּרְצוֹנְךָ הָנִֽיחַ לָֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ שֶׁלֹא תְהֵא צָרָה וְיָגוֹן וַאֲנָחָה בְּיוֹם מְנוּחָתֵֽנוּ וְהַרְאֵֽנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ בְּנֶחָמוֹת צִיּוֹן עִירֶֽךָ וּבְבִנְיַן יְרוּשָׁלַֽםִ עִיר קָדְשֶֽׁךָ כִּי אַתָּה הוּא בַּֽעַל הַיְשׁוּעוֹת וּבַֽעַל הַנֶּחָמוֹת.	Und mach uns stark und befrei uns, Gott unser Gott, durch deine Gebote Und das Gebot des siebenten Tags, Des Sabbats, des großen, des heil’gen heut. Denn heur ist Groß und heilig cin Tag in deinem Lichte, zu feiern heut und zu ruhen heut In Liebe nach deines Willens Richte. Und so wolle auch du uns Ruhe verleihn, Gott unser Gott, Daß kein Zagen sei, keine Not, kein Schrein Am Tag unsrer Ruhe. Und gönn uns die Schau, Gott unser Gott, Auf den Trost unsrer heiligen Stadt Und auf Ẓions, deines Heiligtums, Bau. Denn einzig bist Heiland Du und Tröster Du.
	An Neumonden und Feiertagen sagt man:
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ, יַעֲלֶה וְיָבֹא וְיַגִּיעַ וְיֵרָאֶה וְיֵרָצֶה וְיִשָּׁמַע וְיִפָּקֵד וְיִזָּכֵר זִכְרוֹנֵֽנוּ וּפִקְדּוֹנֵֽנוּ וְזִכְרוֹן אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ, וְזִכְרוֹן מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן דָּוִד עַבְדֶּֽךָ, וְזִכְרוֹן יְרוּשָׁלַםִ עִיר קָדְשֶֽׁךָ, וְזִכְרוֹן כָּל עַמְּךָ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל לְפָנֶיךָ, ‏לִפְלֵיטָה וּלְטוֹבָה וּלְחֵן וּלְחֶֽסֶד וּלְרַחֲמִים וּלְחַיִּים וּלְשָׁלוֹם בְּיוֹם … הַזֶּה׃	Unser Gott du und Gott unsrer Väter: Es steige auf und komme und trete her und sei bemerkt und vorgelassen und gehört und angenommen und bestimmt unsre Bestimmung und Annehmung und die Bestimmung unsrer Väter und die Bestimmung des Messias, Davids deines Knechtes Sproß, und die Bestimmung deiner heil’gen Stadt Jerusalem und die Bestimmung deines ganzen Volkes Israel Vor deinen Thron, Zu Freiheit und Freude, Zu Liebe, Güte, Milde, zum Leben und zum Frieden Am Tage des heutigen Fests.
זָכְרֵֽנּוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ בּוֹ לְטוֹבָה. (אָמֵן) וּפָקְדֵֽנוּ בוֹ לִבְרָכָה. (אָמֵן) וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ בוֹ לְחַיִּים טוֹבִים. (אָמֵן) וּבִדְבַר יְשׁוּעָה וְרַחֲמִים חוּס וְחָנֵּנוּ וְרַחֵם עָלֵֽינוּ וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ, כִּי אֵלֶֽיךָ עֵינֵֽינוּ, כִּי אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם אָֽתָּה.	Bestimm heut zur Gedeih uns, Un nimm heut zu deiner Weih’ uns, Und Hülfe leih uns heut zum Leben, Und im Zeichen des Heils und der Liebe sei hold und verzeih uns. Und weile bei uns Und mach frei uns. וּבְנֵה יְרוּשָׁלַֽםִ עִיר הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ בִּמְהֵרָה בְּיָמֵֽינוּ. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ בֹּֽנֶה בְרַחֲמָיו יְרוּשָׁלָֽםִ. אָמֵן.	Und bau die Stadt des Heiligtums Jerusalem Bald, in unsern Tagen. Lob drum, ja Lob dir o Gott, Baust in Barmherzigkeit Jerusalem. Amen.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם הָאֵל אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ אַדִּירֵֽנוּ בּוֹרְאֵֽנוּ גֹאֲלֵֽנוּ יוֹצְרֵֽנוּ קְדוֹשֵֽׁנוּ קְדוֹשׁ יַעֲקֹב רוֹעֵֽנוּ רוֹעֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמֶּֽלֶךְ הַטּוֹב וְהַמֵּטִיב לַכֹּל שֶׁבְּכָל יוֹם וָיוֹם הוּא הֵטִיב הוּא מֵטִיב הוּא יֵיטִיב לָֽנוּ: הוּא גְמָלָֽנוּ הוּא גוֹמְלֵנוּ הוּא יִגְמְלֵנוּ לָעַד לְחֵן לְחֶֽסֶד וּלְרַחֲמִים וּלְרֶֽוַח הַצָּלָה וְהַצְלָחָה בְּרָכָה וִישׁוּעָה נֶחָמָה פַּרְנָסָה וְכַלְכָּלָה וְרַחֲמִים וְחַיִּים וְשָׁלוֹם וְכָל טוֹב וּמִכָּל טוֹב אַל יְחַסְּרֵֽנוּ.	Lob nun, ja Lob dir o Gott, unser Gott und König des All du Er uns Vater und König und Held und Schöpfer und Erlöser und Meister, unser Heil’ger, du Heil’ger Jaakobs, unser Hirte, du Hirte Israels. Der Walter der Liebe, Er liebt das All. Und Tag um Tag Liebte und liebt er und wird uns lieben, Half uns, hilft uns und hilft uns fort, Mit Liebe, mit Güte, mit Milde, Mir Schutz und Schirm aller Enden, Mit Segen und Heil und Trost Und Pflege und Nahrung. Und lässer der Liebe, des Lebens, des Heils, Und all⸗allen Guts Nimmer uns mangeln.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵֽינוּ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד׃	Der gute Gott woll’ über uns walten immer auf ewig.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִתְבָּרַךְ בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם וּבָאָֽרֶץ׃	Der gute Gott ihm schalle Lob im Himmel und auf Erden.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִשְׁתַּבַּח לְדוֹר דּוֹרִים וְיִתְפָּֽאַר בָּֽנוּ לָעַד לָנֵֽצַח נְצָחִים וְיִתְהַדַּר בָּֽנוּ לָעַד וּלְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים׃	Der gute Gott ihm sollen singen Jahr um Jahr und Zeit um Zeit. Der gute Gott er wolle sich durch uns verklären Kraft in Kraft und Ewigkeit in Ewigkeit. Der gute Gott sein Strahl geh’ in uns auf von All zu All, von Reich zu Reich.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יְפַרְנְסֵֽנוּ בְּכָבוֹד׃	Der gute Gott er laß’ uns auskommen in Ehren.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִשְׁבּוֹר עֹל גָלוּת מֵעַל צַוָּארֵֽנוּ וְהוּא יוֹלִיכֵֽנוּ קוֹמֲמִיּוּת לְאַרְצֵֽנוּ׃	Der gute Gott er brech’ unser Joch von unserem Nacken und laß’ Haupt hoch uns einziehn in unser Land.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִשְׁלַח בְּרָכָה מְרֻבָּה בְּבַֽיִת הַזֶה וְעַל שֻׁלְחָן זֶה שֶׁאָכַֽלְנוּ עָלָיו׃	Der gute Gott woll’ uns schicken allerlei Segen in dieses Haus und an diesen Tisch, an dem wir aßen.
הָרַחֲמָן. הוּא יִשְׁלַח לָֽנוּ אֶת אֵלִיָּֽה הַנָּבִיא זָכוּר לַטּוֹב, וִיבַשֵּׂר לָנוּ בְּשׂוֹרוֹת טוֹבוֹת יְשׁוּעוֹת וְנֶחָמוֹת׃	Der gute Gott laß’ zu uns kommen den Elias, seinen Alten. Der entbeut uns Frohe Botschaft, Gewärt’ges Heil und Trostkraft.

This German translation of the Birkat haMazon by Franz Rosenzweig appears in a slim volume, Der Tischdank, volume 22 of Jüdische Bücherei published by the Berlin press of Verlag für Jüdische Kunst und Kultur (Fritz Gurlitt) in 1920. I have set the text of Rosenzweig’s translation side-by-side with the liturgical text of the Birkat haMazon in its Ashkenaz nusaḥ. The Cantors Assembly of America had the segment of Ha-Siddur Ha-Shalem (Birnbaum 1949) containing the Birkat ha-Mazon (Blessing [after] the Meal) published by itself as a bentsher titled Rabbotai Nevareḥ in 1954. Added to the bentsher were notes to the popular Ashkenazi tune of the birkat hamazon provided by Moshe Nathanson.

This bentsher is in the Public Domain in the United States due to the lack of copyright renewal by the copyright holder indicated in the work’s copyright notice, a condition required for works published in the US between 1923 and 1963.

Making digital images of these works available is the first step in our process of making the entire prayerbook, both Hebrew liturgy and English translation, machine-readable (copy-pastable and searchable). Foreword

The Cantors Assembly of America takes pride in presenting, for the first time, the entire Birkat Hamazon set to music. The traditional melodies, which are uni versally sung, have been retained and new melodies in keeping with our modes (Nuschaot) have been composed for those portions of grace which heretofore were not sung. Music for the special grace blessings for a Brith Milah, for weddings and also for the Sheva Brachot have been included. Much thought was given to the voice range and the singability of all of the melodies.

This publication will fulfill a need so often expressed by rabbis, educational directors, principals, teachers, Jewish camp directors, and especially cantors who are called upon to lead in grace after meals. It will help to standardize the singing of grace. Through this medium, the chanting of grace at all functions and occasions will be more meaningful, inspiring and will induce greater participation.

We wish to thank Reverend Moshe Nathanson for having generously given of his time and effort, for composing much of the new music, for editing, arranging and proofreading of this booklet. We are deeply grateful to Reverend David J. Putterman, our Executive Vice President, for his many valuable suggestions and constant collaboration with Reverend Nathanson. Thanks are due also to Reverend Charles Sudock, our Vice President, who suggested this publication.

סידור אבי חי תפילות וברכות לבית ולמשפחה is a comprehensive nusaḥ Sefaradi birkon containing liturgy for family celebrations (and for domestic use in general), published on behalf of the Avi Chai Foundation in 1999. (A companion volume contains the liturgy for Shabbat.) A lucid commentary by Dr. Avigdor Shinan supplements the liturgy.

Both volumes were contributed to the Open Siddur Project in 2009 following our public launch that year, ostensibly as a crucial resource for seeding our anticipated database of Jewish liturgy. Unfortunately, although digital editions of the siddurim were contributed, they had been rendered into PDF with digital fonts developed prior to the Unicode standard for addressing Hebrew characters, diacritics (niqqud, t’amamim), and punctuation. The result was such that neither edition could be used as a resource of digital text without a means of converting their contents into Unicode Hebrew. As with many non-digital, printed siddurim, the unique contents of this siddurim would need to either be manually transcribed or else wait until some automated method might be devised.

I am a humanist. I am a feminist. I am an environmentalist. I am a libertarian. I am a pacifist. I believe in democracy. I am an agnostic. Traditional Jewish prayer is not any of these “ists” or “ics”; it reflects the worldview of the rabbis 1500 years ago, who may have been quite sagacious but did not share many of my values. The minor and major edits, deletions, and additions to which liberal Jews of this day and age have treated their prayers have inserted some of these sentiments, but for the most part the macro structure of prayers has been preserved, making it difficult for people to engage with the prayer in a straightforward way. The composers of liberal prayer books understand this, and thus we find the phenomenon of alternative or additional English readings and/or very creative translations that bear little relationship to the original prayer. There is another way forward, though. We can compose new prayers and poetry in the original Hebrew that reflect our values and revitalize our canon. This is the way I chose.

Many of our best times are spent eating. Jewish liturgy, however, is sparing on its blessings before eating (focusing much of its energy on blessings after eating). The blessings before food are generic formulae, and except for very specific foods and drinks (such as wine, bread, and matzah), all foods lump into three or four categories (fruit, vegetables, grains, and everything else). As a foodie, I’d like to celebrate each and every distinct taste through the prism of Jewish experience, and thus have tried to compose as many short poems as possible in their honor.

This is a compact siddur for weekday Minḥa according to Nusaḥ Ereṣ Yisrael, as derived from rulings of the Jerusalem Talmud, fragments found in the Cairo Geniza and other historical documents.

Until the time of the First Crusade, the Jewish communities of the Land of Israel maintained the ancient traditions: they followed the Halakhic rulings of the Jerusalem Talmud (as opposed to its Babylonian counterpart) and prayed according to the liturgy used in Ereṣ Yisrael from time immemorial. Even outside the Land, certain communities, notably Egypt, used the Land of Israel’s liturgy and followed the ancient customs of Ereṣ Yisrael as recently as two generations ago! But, in the Jewish world in general, the nusaḥ of Ereṣ Yisrael had receded into the mist of history.

Today, old realities of Jewish life in the Exile, a time of decline and decay, are clearly not the same as the realities we are experiencing during our period of national and spiritual rebirth. Today, nearly 50% of the Jewish nation lives in Ereṣ Yisrael, its ancestral homeland. The Return of Jews to Ereṣ Yisrael should be complemented by a return to the authentic teachings and religious practices of Ereṣ Yisrael in order to “renew our days as of old.”

The Siddur Ereṣ Yisrael project is a significant milestone in this process for all Jews, whether they still live in the Exile or already live in Ereṣ Yisrael. The driving force behind the revival of this ancient nusaḥ is Rabbi David Bar-Hayim of Machon Shilo in Jerusalem.

This siddur also includes Birkat HaMazon (Grace After Meals) and Tefillat HaDerekh (Travelers’ Prayer). Modern additions to the ancient prayers include ʿAl Hannissim for Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Liberation Day) and Yom HaAṣmaut (Israeli Independence Day), additions which keep the nusaḥ at once uniquely ancient, yet thoroughly connected to our modern reality here in the Land Of Israel.

Lara Chausow and Lauren Weiss live in Washington, DC. They met at Tikkun Leil Shabbat in 2015 and married at Adas Israel in 2018, and they still attend multiple shuls. Lara is a data analyst for the government, and Lauren is a lobbyist for an association of family planning health centers. They write,

כׇּל יֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל Kol Yoshvei Tevel^[1] ”All inhabitants of Earth,” Isaiah 18:3 partial. Also Psalms 33:8 and Lamentations 4:12. is a bentsher that my wife and I made for our same-sex wedding, designed by Hillel Smith, based on a base text by José and Josh Portuondo-Dember. It is: fully egalitarian, has full transliteration, has non-gendered language for G-d, and has full option of wife/husband/spouse pairings for sheva brachot. The PDF (linked above) is for anyone to use (it has a couple of errors, sorry about that), and if you want, you can download the IDML file to edit and create your own bentsher!

This book of prayers for the home — commonly referred to as a bentsher in Yiddish — contains the blessings that many Jews invoke after meals, during the Sabbath (Shabbat) and holidays, and in honor of weddings.

We hope that this bentsher will provide our guests with a valued memento from our wedding. As with our entire wedding, we strove to create a bentsher that represented our values, both as individuals and as a couple. The title of this bentsher, “Kol Yoshvei Tevel,” translates to “all who dwell on Earth.” This is a phrase that many add to prayers for peace that traditionally are for “us” (those saying the prayer) and “for all of the people of Yisrael” (Jews everywhere). By expanding the prayers, we are not only wishing for peace for all people, but also stating that we are part of, and cannot be separated from, all of humanity.

Additionally, this bentsher uses gender-neutral words for God and for humanity, includes our foremothers as equals to our forefathers, and normalizes both same-sex and different-sex couples.^[3] In keeping with our understanding of the gendered nature of Hebrew, we have provided options for brides and grooms. We welcome you to use additional terms for spouses as you feel best meets your and your spouse’s gender identity. We have included transliterations, translations, and explanatory notes in hopes that the text is accessible to all, no matter one’s level of familiarity with these prayers or fluency in Hebrew. As we could not find an existing bentsher that met these needs, we decided to make our own. We are deeply indebted to José and Josh Portuondo-Dember, who gave us the files for the bentsher they created, and to Hillel Smith, who designed this bentsher. Ḥesed uMishpat Ashirah Lekha is a nusaḥ Ashkenaz bentsher (birkon) containing the birkat hamazon (blessing after meals) with sheva b’rakhot and child welcoming additions, ḳiddush for Shabbat and holidays, Shabbat songs, and other songs. The Sheva B’rakhot includes options for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. It is fully transliterated and translated into English, taking care to avoid gendered pronouns: “they” pronouns are used for people, and pronouns are not used for God.

The bentsher is based on the “כל יושבי תבל” (Kol Yoshvei Tevel) L&L bentsher compiled by Lara Chausow amd Lauren Weiss, and designed by Hillel Smith.

📖 סִימָן לְבָנִים | Siman l’Vanim: a birkon celebrating the wedding of Honi Sanders and Simona Dalin (2019)

Siman L’vanim (“a sign to the children“) is a birkon/bentsher (blessing-book) prepared in celebration of the wedding of Honi Sanders and Simona Dalin on July 7th, 2019. The birkon contains versions of the birkat hamazon common to both Sefaradi and Ashkenazi communities. The translation and transliteration of the Sefaradi nusaḥ follows that of Hazzan Isaac Azose. The translation and transliteration of the Ashkenazi nusaḥ was prepared by Aharon Varady of Dimus Parrhessia Press who also designed the bentsher.

The birkon also contains translations of zemirot by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, z”l, from his Tehillat Hashem Yedaber Pi sabbath supplement, new translations by Honi and Akiva Sanders, and translations adapted by Aharon Varady from his Siddur Livnat haSapir (Dimus Parrhesia Press 2017).
