מוֹדה אֲנִי | Returning the body to the soul: an adaptation of Modeh Ani by Moshe ibn Makhir

Modeh Ani first appeared as an addendum in Seder ha-Yom (1599) by Moshe ibn Makhir of Safed. A slightly different formula offers a deep insight into who and what has returned to one’s self upon waking.

Arise, my soul! with rapture rise! — a morning hymn of the Reformed Society of Israelites (Charleston, South Carolina, ca. 1825)

“Arise, my soul! with rapture rise!” is the incipit to Hymn №2 in Barnett A. Elzas’s The Sabbath Service and Miscellaneous Prayers (1916), an edited republication of “The Sabbath service and miscellaneous prayers, adopted by the Reformed society of Israelites, founded in Charleston, S. C., November 21, 1825.” The hymn appears on pages 55-56 without any additional attribution.

A Waking Prayer in the Morning, by Dinah Julia Levi (1900)

This untitled “morning mediation,” a waking prayer, was written by Dinah Julia Levi née Emanuel and included by her daughter, Annie Josephine Levi, in her anthology of teḥinot in English, Meditations of the Heart (1900), pp. 56-57.
