נְאֻֽם־פֶּ֣שַׁע לָ֭רָשָׁע בְּקֶ֣רֶב לִבִּ֑י אֵֽין־פַּ֥חַד אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָֽיו׃	Transgression speaks to the wicked, methinks— There is no fear of Elohim before their eyes.
כִּֽי־הֶחֱלִ֣יק אֵלָ֣יו בְּעֵינָ֑יו לִמְצֹ֖א עֲוֺנ֣וֹ לִשְׂנֹֽא׃	For it flatters them in their eyes, Until their iniquity is found, and they be hated.
דִּבְרֵי־פִ֭יו אָ֣וֶן וּמִרְמָ֑ה חָדַ֖ל לְהַשְׂכִּ֣יל לְהֵיטִֽיב׃	The words of their mouth are iniquity and deceit; They have put off to be wise, to do good.
אָ֤וֶן ׀ יַחְשֹׁ֗ב עַֽל־מִשְׁכָּ֫ב֥וֹ יִ֭תְיַצֵּב עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ לֹא־ט֑וֹב רָ֝֗ע לֹ֣א יִמְאָֽס׃	They devise iniquity upon their bed; They set themselves in a way that is not good; They abhor not evil.
יְ֭הוָה בְּהַשָּׁמַ֣יִם חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ אֱ֝מֽוּנָתְךָ֗ עַד־שְׁחָקִֽים׃	Your lovingkindness, YHVH, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches unto the skies.
צִדְקָֽתְךָ֨ ׀ כְּֽהַרְרֵי־אֵ֗ל מִ֭שְׁפָּטֶךָ תְּה֣וֹם רַבָּ֑ה אָ֤דָֽם־וּבְהֵמָ֖ה תוֹשִׁ֣יעַ יְהוָֽה׃	Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains; Your judgments are like the great deep; Adam and behemah you preserve, YHVH.
מַה־יָּקָ֥ר חַסְדְּךָ֗ אֱלֹ֫הִ֥ים וּבְנֵ֥י אָדָ֑ם בְּצֵ֥ל כְּ֝נָפֶ֗יךָ יֶחֱסָיֽוּן׃	How precious is your lovingkindness, Elohim! And the children of Adam take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
יִ֭רְוְיֻן מִדֶּ֣שֶׁן בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ וְנַ֖חַל עֲדָנֶ֣יךָ תַשְׁקֵֽם׃	They are abundantly satisfied with the fatness of your house; And you make them drink of the river of your pleasures.
כִּֽי־עִ֭מְּךָ מְק֣וֹר חַיִּ֑ים בְּ֝אוֹרְךָ֗ נִרְאֶה־אֽוֹר׃	For with you is the fountain of life; In your light do we see light.
מְשֹׁ֣ךְ חַ֭סְדְּךָ לְיֹדְעֶ֑יךָ וְ֝צִדְקָֽתְךָ֗ לְיִשְׁרֵי־לֵֽב׃	O continue your lovingkindness unto them that know you; And your righteousness to the upright in heart.
אַל־תְּ֭בוֹאֵנִי רֶ֣גֶל גַּאֲוָ֑ה וְיַד־רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים אַל־תְּנִדֵֽנִי׃	Let not the foot of pride overtake me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
שָׁ֣ם נָ֭פְלוּ פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן דֹּ֝ח֗וּ וְלֹא־יָ֥כְלוּ קֽוּם׃	There are the workers of iniquity fallen; They are thrust down, and are not able to rise.

^ב אֲרוֹמִמְךָ֣ יְ֭הוָה כִּ֣י דִלִּיתָ֑נִי וְלֹא־שִׂמַּ֖חְתָּ אֹיְבַ֣י לִֽי׃ ^ג יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָ֑י שִׁוַּ֥עְתִּי אֵ֝לֶ֗יךָ וַתִּרְפָּאֵֽנִי׃ ^ד יְֽהוָ֗ה הֶֽעֱלִ֣יתָ מִן־שְׁא֣וֹל נַפְשִׁ֑י חִ֝יִּיתַ֗נִי מיורדי־[מִיָּֽרְדִי־] בֽוֹר׃	² I acclaim You, my God. You set me free So that my foes Could not gloat at my troubles. ³ Yah, my God, I pleaded with You. This English translation of Psalms 30 by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi z”l, was first published in his Siddur Tehillat Hashem Yidaber Pi (2009). Versification by Aharon Varady.

Psalms 30 is the psalm for the days of Ḥanukkah. In the daily prayers, this psalm is often recited in the morning prayers just before the Pesukei Dezimra, appearing in siddurim in the context of messianic aspirations during the 17th century. Psalms 30:12 is found in the prayers recited following Motsei Shabbat Maariv. Psalms 30:13 is part of the prayer, “Uva Letzion.”

Avi Dolgin’s translation of תהלים כט (Psalm 29) interweaves between the original Hebrew (הָב֣וּ לַֽ֭יהוָה בְּנֵ֣י אֵלִ֑ים | havu l’YHVH b’nei eilim) and an English language interpretation. The interpretation, while faithful to the original, leans heavily on environmental concerns, especially as seen from a North American West Coast perspective. בִּקְרֹב עָלַי מְרֵעִים לֶאֱכֹל אֶת בְּשָׂרִי, צָרַי וְאֹיְבַי לִי, הֵמָּה כָשְׁלוּ וְנָפָלוּ׃ אִם תַּחֲנֶה עָלַי מַחֲנֶה לֹא יִירָא לִבִּי, אִם תָּקוּם עָלַי מִלְחָמָה בְּזֹאת אֲנִי בוֹטֵחַ׃	When evildoers draw near to devour me, foes threaten Yet they stumble and fall. In most Masoretic manuscripts לולא is written surrounded by dots – the only ‘dots below’ in the entire Tanakh. I personally feel like many translations completely miss the point by using phrases like “If I had not believed” (OJPS) or “Had I not the assurance” (NJPS) or “Had I not trusted” (Artscroll), making the verse into a blanket declaration of blind faith. It’s not that – it’s a declaration of doubt. לולא is grammatically always a counterfactual – “if only, but it isn’t true.” The psalmist, in a rare moment of doubt, admits he cannot be sure that God will do justice for him. He then comforts himself, telling himself to have hope, just as I might say “Calm down, Isaac,” when troubled. It’s one of the greatest moments of pathos in all 150 psalms.

“The All-Cause” is used to translate the Divine Name, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.”

“They” and “Their” is used as a singular pronoun to refer to God. This is not just for anti-sexist reasons, but also because the standard word for “God” is אלהים, which looks like a plural. Just as a queen says “we” to refer to herself, the “plural of majesty” is appropriate when referring to the multitudes that stem from God.

Concerning Psalms 27:13, RaShI writes, “The word “Lulei” has dots on it to expound that which our Rabbis expounded: I know that You give reward to righteous in the world to come, but I don’t know if I have a portion with them or not.” (Cf. Berakhot 4a)

While the virtues of Psalms 27 are extolled in a general way by others, Moshe Ḥalamish writes that the earliest plausible source for saying Psalms 27 during Elul Zman is the Sefer Shem Tov Katan of R. Binyamin Beineish ha-Cohen (“the Ba’al Shem of Kratshin”) at the end of the 17th century, after which it appears in Ḥemdat ha-Yamim, Yamim Noraim 4, 14d. Psalms 27 is recited twice daily from Rosh Ḥodesh Elul till Shemini Atzeret. Psalms 27:7 is found in the repetition of the Shaḥarit Amidah during Rosh Hashanah. Psalms 27:13 is found in the Musaf Amidah on Rosh Hashanah. Psalms 27:14 is one of the verses recited before the piyyut, “Ein Keloheinu.”

Psalms №27 has a very tight thematic structure, with a set of word plays around שיר–מישור–שוררי (straight lines of verse, path, those that line up against me/opponents), צור–צרי–צרי (Rock, those that trap/trouble me, dire straits), and the consonance between צוררי–שוררי. We also get the heavy parallelism and light chiastic structure in the framing, repeated call backs to images and phrases (My Salvation, raising, no fear, God’s Face, being forsook), word play (parents forsake so God is my הורני – the one who instructs me as a parent). There is also the contrasting image of God’s prolonged angry snort vs the shallow exhalation of violence of the lying witnesses. Note too that this is an early example of “words as violence”. The penultimate verse calls back to verse 4, looking upon God’s delightful goodness, and life or the land of the living is compared to the Temple. There is also a fascinating external reference to Moses (and Elijah) being hidden in the cleft of the Rock and from there seeking to see God’s Face. Finally, there is a rather intriguing question about what it means for God to keep us on the straight and narrow path for the sake of those that line up against us. Is God acting on their behalf? Thru them? Is this the classic “antisemitism aids in Jewish unity” argument from three millennia ago or do we walk this path in order to actually save even our opponents in some way. Perhaps צוררי–שוררי is about opponents vs adversaries and praying God will draw a fine line between them from which we will not cross over or stray into.

The Hebrew language is a zip line from a time-bound, place-bound, and English-bound experience to an ancient civilization’s continually unfolding encounter with the Divine. Hebrew has a unique ability to engage our senses and our rational minds while gently slipping underneath them. To think and pray in Hebrew is to dwell inside nuance and potentiality, to immerse in a sea of words that are few in number but teem with hyperlinks to mystical-imaginal realms and hundreds of centuries of transcendent experience. Psalm 23 is among the best known and most loved of the 150 beautiful poems that we think date back to about the sixth through third centuries BCE. For many, this particular psalm has been a source of great strength in the face of danger and hardship.

My hope is that the combination of breathing and singing at a time when most of us are also fasting will induce a shift in perspective, an attunement to higher realms of perception, and an understanding that even at our darkest moments, we are never alone.

In the mid 1960s, Avraham Yaari reviewed the copies of the Schauffler Bible in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Library and determined that the translation was actually a copy of a previous 1744 translation by Rabbi Avraham Assa in Constantinople, with the exception of certain words mistranslated to fit into William Gottlieb Schauffler‘s Christian philosophy. Steinberg-Caudill explains, “Here is a place where we can easily see a Christian translation interpolated in this text. ‘For dogs have already surrounded me; a company of evil-doers has enclosed me, like lions (they are) at my hands and feet.’ The Hebrew phrase in question here is; כארי ידי ורגלי (kaari yaday veraglay) Our traditional Ladino has, ‘Como el leon, mis manos y mis pies’ (as lions they are at my hands and feet). Schauffler translates the word כארי as ‘they pierced.'”

Psalms 22 is traditionally recited on the Fast of Esther. This psalm is recited during synagogue services on Purim by various groups. Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews say Psalms 22 at the beginning of the evening service on Purim night. Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews, as well as Ashkenazi Jews who follow the custom of the Vilna Gaon, recite Psalm 22 as the Song of the Day in the Purim morning service.

Psalms 22:4 is part of the opening paragraph of Uva letzion. Psalms 22:12 is recited during Selichot. Psalms 22:26 is found in the repetition of the Amidah in the Rosh Hashanah morning service. Psalms 22:29 is a part of the Song of the Sea, which is recited during Pesukei dezimra in the morning prayer. This verse is also said during Mussaf on Rosh Hashanah.

אֵלִי אֵלִי לָמָה עֲזַבְתָּנִי רָחוֹק מִישׁוּעָתִי דִּבְרֵי שַׁאֲגָתִי׃	O God, my God! Why have You abandoned me? My prayer is right here and Your Help is so distant.

יֹאכְלוּ עֲנָוִים וְיִשְׂבָּעוּ יְהַלְלוּ יְהֹוָה דֹּרְשָׁיו יְחִי לְבַבְכֶם לָעַד׃ יִזְכְּרוּ וְיָשֻׁבוּ אֶל־יְהֹוָה כׇּל־אַפְסֵי־אָרֶץ וְיִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לְפָנֶיךָ כׇּל־מִשְׁפְּחוֹת גּוֹיִם׃	The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek God will offer praise. Psalms 20 is traditionally recited in times of stress, especially during childbirth.

Psalms 20 is recited in its entirety as part of the daily shaḥarit service, between Ashrei and Uva Letziyon (at the end of shaḥarit). Psalms 20:2 and Psalms 20:10 are part of the opening paragraph of the long Tachanun recited on Mondays and Thursdays. Psalms 20:10 is also the 11th verse of V’hu Raḥum and the final verse of Yehi Kavod in Pesukei Dezimra; it is included in Uva Letzion; it is the second of two verses recited as an introduction at Maariv; and it is part of series of verses introducing the Havdalah for Shabbat.

עַתָּ֤ה יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּ֤י הוֹשִׁ֥יעַ ׀ יְהֹוָ֗ה מְשִׁ֫יח֥וֹ יַ֭עֲנֵהוּ מִשְּׁמֵ֣י קׇדְשׁ֑וֹ בִּ֝גְבֻר֗וֹת יֵ֣שַׁע יְמִינֽוֹ׃	Now I know that the Cause will save the anointed, will answer him from the heavens of the Holy with might, dexterous victory.
אֵ֣לֶּה בָ֭רֶכֶב וְאֵ֣לֶּה בַסּוּסִ֑ים וַאֲנַ֓חְנוּ ׀ בְּשֵׁם־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣ינוּ נַזְכִּֽיר׃	They call on chariots, they call on horses, but we call on the name of the Cause our God.
הֵ֭מָּה כָּרְע֣וּ וְנָפָ֑לוּ וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ קַּ֝֗מְנוּ וַנִּתְעוֹדָֽד׃	They collapse and fall, and we rise and gain strength.
יְהֹוָ֥ה הוֹשִׁ֑יעָה הַ֝מֶּ֗לֶךְ יַעֲנֵ֥נוּ בְיוֹם־קׇרְאֵֽנוּ׃	O Cause, save! May the Sovereign answer us on the day we call.

“The Cause” is used to translate the Divine Name YHVH, based on the philosophical idea of God as the Prime Mover and on the interpretation of the Name as a causative form of the copula – “causes to be.”

הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם מְֽסַפְּרִ֥ים כְּבֽוֹד־אֵ֑ל וּֽמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָ֝דָ֗יו מַגִּ֥יד הָרָקִֽיעַ׃	God! The Heavens manifest Your splendor, the sky, Your fingerprint— how eloquent its message!
י֣וֹם לְ֭יוֹם יַבִּ֣יעַֽ אֹ֑מֶר וְלַ֥יְלָה לְּ֝לַ֗יְלָה יְחַוֶּה־דָּֽעַת׃	Each day speaks to the one that follows and each night imparts what it knows to the next.
אֵֽין־אֹ֭מֶר וְאֵ֣ין דְּבָרִ֑ים בְּ֝לִ֗י נִשְׁמָ֥ע קוֹלָֽם׃	Not words, no speech; though nothing is heard, it has voice.
בְּכׇל־הָאָ֨רֶץ ׀ יָ֘צָ֤א קַוָּ֗ם וּבִקְצֵ֣ה תֵ֭בֵל מִלֵּיהֶ֑ם לַ֝שֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ שָֽׂם־אֹ֥הֶל בָּהֶֽם׃	Their messages encircle the globe; to the end of the universe they give word. The sun, he is at home in them.
וְה֗וּא כְּ֭חָתָן יֹצֵ֣א מֵחֻפָּת֑וֹ יָשִׂ֥ישׂ כְּ֝גִבּ֗וֹר לָר֥וּץ אֹֽרַח׃ מִקְצֵ֤ה הַשָּׁמַ֨יִם ׀ מֽוֹצָא֗וֹ וּתְקוּפָת֥וֹ עַל־קְצוֹתָ֑ם וְאֵ֥ין נִ֝סְתָּ֗ר מֵחַמָּתֽוֹ׃	And he—the Sun—like a proud lover who comes forth from his tryst, rejoices like a sprinter speeding on his track; from one end of the sky he dashes forth. and His circuit touches the entire rim. There is no hiding from his heat.
תּ֘וֹרַ֤ת יְהֹוָ֣ה תְּ֭מִימָה מְשִׁ֣יבַת נָ֑פֶשׁ	So is God’s teaching total; so does it invigorate the spirit.
עֵד֥וּת יְהֹוָ֥ה נֶ֝אֱמָנָ֗ה מַחְכִּ֥ימַת פֶּֽתִי׃	So trustworthy is God’s witness, making the confused wise.
פִּקּ֘וּדֵ֤י יְהֹוָ֣ה יְ֭שָׁרִים מְשַׂמְּחֵי־לֵ֑ב מִצְוַ֥ת יְהֹוָ֥ה בָּ֝רָ֗ה מְאִירַ֥ת עֵינָֽיִם׃ יִרְאַ֤ת יְהֹוָ֨ה ׀ טְהוֹרָה֮ עוֹמֶ֢דֶת לָ֫עַ֥ד מִֽשְׁפְּטֵי־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱמֶ֑ת צָֽדְק֥וּ יַחְדָּֽו׃	So are God’s ventures direct; so hearts are at bliss. Awe of God brings purity, lasting through all changes. God’s determination makes for Truth, in which all are made right.
הַֽנֶּחֱמָדִ֗ים מִ֭זָּהָב וּמִפַּ֣ז רָ֑ב וּמְתוּקִ֥ים מִ֝דְּבַ֗שׁ וְנֹ֣פֶת צוּפִֽים׃	God’s ways are more attractive than gold, more than heaps of jewels, more pleasurable than honey and delicate sweets.
גַּֽם־עַ֭בְדְּךָ נִזְהָ֣ר בָּהֶ֑ם בְּ֝שׇׁמְרָ֗ם עֵ֣קֶב רָֽב׃	I am devoted to You, I want to grow in Your service; in its practice I find refuge.
שְׁגִיא֥וֹת מִֽי־יָבִ֑ין מִֽנִּסְתָּר֥וֹת נַקֵּֽנִי׃	Who can apprehend one’s own errors? Please clear me from what I am unaware.
גַּ֤ם מִזֵּדִ֨ים ׀ חֲשֹׂ֬ךְ עַבְדֶּ֗ךָ אַֽל־יִמְשְׁלוּ־בִ֣י	Also from wanton harming, protect me, who serves You; let evil not control me.
אָ֣ז אֵיתָ֑ם וְ֝נִקֵּ֗יתִי מִפֶּ֥שַֽׁע רָֽב׃	Then will I be made whole and I will be cleared from all guilt.

(The subtle difference in the pronunciation of this verse differentiates the weekday from the Shabbat/Yom Tov version in which 2 Samuel 22:41 is recited).

The special Ladino diacritic appearing over some of the letters (e.g., שﬞ) is called a varika.

וַתִּגְעַ֬שׁ וַתִּרְעַ֨שׁ ׀ הָאָ֗רֶץ וּמוֹסְדֵ֣י הָרִ֣ים יִרְגָּ֑זוּ וַ֝יִּתְגָּֽעֲשׁ֗וּ כִּי־חָ֥רָה לֽוֹ׃ עָ֘לָ֤ה עָשָׁ֨ן ׀ בְּאַפּ֗וֹ וְאֵשׁ־מִפִּ֥יו תֹּאכֵ֑ל גֶּ֝חָלִ֗ים בָּעֲר֥וּ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ וַיֵּ֣ט שָׁ֭מַיִם וַיֵּרַ֑ד וַ֝עֲרָפֶ֗ל תַּ֣חַת רַגְלָֽיו׃	[Then He showed me Her power in Nature.] The earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains moved and were shaken, because He was angry. וַיִּרְכַּ֣ב עַל־כְּ֭רוּב וַיָּעֹ֑ף וַ֝יֵּ֗דֶא עַל־כַּנְפֵי־רֽוּחַ׃ יָ֤שֶׁת חֹ֨שֶׁךְ ׀ סִתְר֗וֹ סְבִֽיבוֹתָ֥יו סֻכָּת֑וֹ חֶשְׁכַת־מַ֝֗יִם עָבֵ֥י שְׁחָקִֽים׃	He rode on a Keruv, and flew; She soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness His secret place; His pavilion around Him was dark with waters and thick clouds of the skies.
מִנֹּ֗גַהּ נֶ֫גְדּ֥וֹ עָבָ֥יו עָבְר֑וּ בָּ֝רָ֗ד וְגַֽחֲלֵי־אֵֽשׁ׃ וַיַּרְעֵ֬ם בַּשָּׁמַ֨יִם ׀ יְֽהֹוָ֗ה וְ֭עֶלְיוֹן יִתֵּ֣ן קֹל֑וֹ בָּ֝רָ֗ד וְגַֽחֲלֵי־אֵֽשׁ׃	Out of the brightness that was before Her, His thick clouds passed— hail stones and coals of fire. YaH also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High One gave His voice— hail stones and coals of fire.
וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח חִ֭צָּיו וַיְפִיצֵ֑ם וּבְרָקִ֥ים רָ֝֗ב וַיְהֻמֵּֽם׃	He sent out his arrows, and scattered them and He shot out lightning bolts, and confounded them.
וַיֵּ֤רָא֨וּ ׀ אֲפִ֥יקֵי מַ֗יִם וַֽיִּגָּלוּ֮ מוֹסְד֢וֹת תֵּ֫בֵ֥ל מִגַּעֲרָ֣תְךָ֣ יְהֹוָ֑ה מִ֝נִּשְׁמַ֗ת ר֣וּחַ אַפֶּֽךָ׃	Then flashfloods were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at Your rebuke, O YaH, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.
יִשְׁלַ֣ח מִ֭מָּרוֹם יִקָּחֵ֑נִי יַֽ֝מְשֵׁ֗נִי מִמַּ֥יִם רַבִּֽים׃ יַצִּילֵ֗נִי מֵאֹיְבִ֥י עָ֑ז וּ֝מִשֹּׂנְאַ֗י כִּֽי־אָמְצ֥וּ מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ יְקַדְּמ֥וּנִי בְיוֹם־אֵידִ֑י וַֽיְהִי־יְהֹוָ֖ה לְמִשְׁעָ֣ן לִֽי׃ וַיּוֹצִיאֵ֥נִי לַמֶּרְחָ֑ב יְ֝חַלְּצֵ֗נִי כִּ֘י חָ֥פֵֽץ בִּֽי׃	He, from above, took me up; He drew me out of the vast waters. She saved me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me. They were too strong for me; they ambushed me when I was most vulnerable. But YaH was my defender— He brought me forth into a safe place; She saved me, because She cares for me.
יִגְמְלֵ֣נִי יְהֹוָ֣ה כְּצִדְקִ֑י כְּבֹ֥ר יָ֝דַ֗י יָשִׁ֥יב לִֽי׃ כִּֽי־שָׁ֭מַרְתִּי דַּרְכֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־רָ֝שַׁ֗עְתִּי מֵאֱלֹהָֽי׃ כִּ֣י כׇל־מִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו לְנֶגְדִּ֑י וְ֝חֻקֹּתָ֗יו לֹא־אָסִ֥יר מֶֽנִּי׃ וָאֱהִ֣י תָמִ֣ים עִמּ֑וֹ	YaH rewards me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands, He recompenses me. This is because I have kept the ways of YaH and have not wickedly turned away from my God. All His just laws were before me and I did not abandon Her statutes; I was upright before Him,
וָ֝אֶשְׁתַּמֵּ֗ר מֵעֲוֺנִֽי׃ וַיָּֽשֶׁב־יְהֹוָ֣ה לִ֣י כְצִדְקִ֑י כְּבֹ֥ר יָ֝דַ֗י לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָֽיו׃	I kept myself from my iniquity; therefore, YaH deals with me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands, which He sees.
עִם־חָסִ֥יד תִּתְחַסָּ֑ד עִם־גְּבַ֥ר תָּ֝מִ֗ים תִּתַּמָּֽם׃ עִם־נָבָ֥ר תִּתְבָּרָ֑ר וְעִם־עִ֝קֵּ֗שׁ תִּתְפַּתָּֽל׃ כִּֽי־אַ֭תָּה עַם־עָנִ֣י תוֹשִׁ֑יעַ וְעֵינַ֖יִם רָמ֣וֹת תַּשְׁפִּֽיל׃	With a kind person, You will show yourself kind; with an upright one, You will show Yourself upright. With the pure, You will show yourself pure; but with the stubborn, You will show Yourself cunning, because You will save the people who are hurting, but will bring down the arrogant.
כִּֽי־אַ֭תָּה תָּאִ֣יר נֵרִ֑י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י יַגִּ֥יהַּ חׇשְׁכִּֽי׃ כִּֽי־בְ֭ךָ אָרֻ֣ץ גְּד֑וּד וּ֝בֵֽאלֹהַ֗י אֲדַלֶּג־שֽׁוּר׃	You will light my candle; YaH, my God, You will enlighten my darkness. With your help I can run the race; with your help, my God, I can leap over a wall.
הָאֵל֮ תָּמִ֢ים דַּ֫רְכּ֥וֹ אִמְרַֽת־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְרוּפָ֑ה מָגֵ֥ן ה֝֗וּא לְכֹ֤ל ׀ הַחֹסִ֬ים בּֽוֹ׃	Your way, God, is perfect: Your word, YaH, is proven. You are a shield to all those who trust in You.
כִּ֤י מִ֣י אֱ֭לוֹהַּ מִבַּלְעֲדֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וּמִ֥י צ֝֗וּר זוּלָתִ֥י אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ הָ֭אֵל הַמְאַזְּרֵ֣נִי חָ֑יִל וַיִּתֵּ֖ן תָּמִ֣ים דַּרְכִּֽי׃ מְשַׁוֶּ֣ה רַ֭גְלַי כָּאַיָּל֑וֹת וְעַ֥ל בָּ֝מֹתַ֗י יַעֲמִידֵֽנִי׃ מְלַמֵּ֣ד יָ֭דַי לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְֽנִחֲתָ֥ה קֶֽשֶׁת־נְ֝חוּשָׁ֗ה זְרוֹעֹתָֽי׃	For who is God but YaH? Who is a rock but our God? It is God, who girds me with strength, and makes my way perfect; She makes my feet fleet, like the feet of a gazelle, and makes me achieve my potential. He teaches my hands how to wage war, so that I can even draw a bow of bronze.

They have submitted to me, for You have girded me with strength to do battle; You have subdued them under me. You have also made my enemies run away from me.
וּ֝מְשַׂנְאַ֗י אַצְמִיתֵֽם׃ יְשַׁוְּע֥וּ וְאֵין־מוֹשִׁ֑יעַ עַל־יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה וְלֹ֣א עָנָֽם׃ וְֽאֶשְׁחָקֵ֗ם כְּעָפָ֥ר עַל־פְּנֵי־ר֑וּחַ כְּטִ֖יט חוּצ֣וֹת אֲרִיקֵֽם׃	I did disarm those who hate me. They cried, but there was none to save them; they cried to YaH, but He did not answer them. I crushed them as the dust before the wind; I cast them as the dirt in the streets.
תְּפַלְּטֵנִי֮ מֵרִ֢יבֵ֫י־עָ֥ם תְּ֭שִׂימֵנִי לְרֹ֣אשׁ גּוֹיִ֑ם	You have saved me from the plots of the rabble and You have made me the head of nations.
עַ֖ם לֹא־יָדַ֣עְתִּי יַֽעַבְדֽוּנִי׃ לְשֵׁ֣מַֽע אֹ֭זֶן יִשָּׁ֣מְעוּ לִ֑י בְּנֵֽי־נֵ֝כָ֗ר יְכַחֲשׁוּ־לִֽי׃ בְּנֵי־נֵכָ֥ר יִבֹּ֑לוּ וְ֝יַחְרְג֗וּ מִֽמִּסְגְּרֽוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃	Strange people shall become my subjects; as soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me. The strangers shall submit themselves to me; the strangers shall give up the resistance, and come trembling out of their hiding.

Psalms 16 is the first of ten Psalms recited in the Tikkun HaKlali of Rebbe Naḥman of Bratslav.

Psalms 16:8 contains the sourcetext for the significant mantra, “shiviti YHVH l’negdi tamid” (I place the tetragrammaton before me always).

מִכְתָּ֥ם לְדָוִ֑ד	David’s imprinted song
שׇֽׁמְרֵ֥נִי אֵ֝֗ל כִּֽי־חָסִ֥יתִי בָֽךְ׃	God! Keep me safe, for I have taken cover in You.
אָמַ֣רְתְּ לַֽ֭יהֹוָה אֲדֹנָ֣י אָ֑תָּה ט֝וֹבָתִ֗י בַּל־עָלֶֽיךָ׃	I have said to YaH, “You are my Lord; although I am of little worth, You are good to me—and kind.”
לִ֭קְדוֹשִׁים אֲשֶׁר־בָּאָ֣רֶץ הֵ֑מָּה וְ֝אַדִּירֵ֗י כׇּל־חֶפְצִי־בָֽם׃ יִרְבּ֥וּ עַצְּבוֹתָם֮ אַחֵ֢ר מָ֫הָ֥רוּ בַּל־אַסִּ֣יךְ נִסְכֵּיהֶ֣ם מִדָּ֑ם וּֽבַל־אֶשָּׂ֥א אֶת־שְׁ֝מוֹתָ֗ם עַל־שְׂפָתָֽי׃	Some who are earthbound think of the idols as sacred and mighty, falsely supposing that their desires will be fulfilled by them. Rushing after idols; their sorrows will increase. I will not make libations of blood to them; I will not put their names on my lips.
יְֽהֹוָ֗ה מְנָת־חֶלְקִ֥י וְכוֹסִ֑י אַ֝תָּ֗ה תּוֹמִ֥יךְ גּוֹרָלִֽי׃ חֲבָלִ֣ים נָֽפְלוּ־לִ֭י בַּנְּעִמִ֑ים אַף־נַ֝חֲלָ֗ת שָֽׁפְרָ֥ה עָלָֽי׃ אֲבָרֵ֗ךְ אֶת־יְ֭הֹוָה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְעָצָ֑נִי אַף־לֵ֝יל֗וֹת יִסְּר֥וּנִי כִלְיוֹתָֽי׃ שִׁוִּ֬יתִי יְהֹוָ֣ה לְנֶגְדִּ֣י תָמִ֑יד כִּ֥י מִֽ֝ימִינִ֗י בַּל־אֶמּֽוֹט׃	YaH! You are my chosen portion and my cup; You keep me in Your care. Your Providence is pleasing to me; What a good heritage is now mine. I will bless You, YaH, for Your counsels to me, how in dreams You give me wise guidance. I place myself constantly in Your Presence; I will not falter because You are at my side
לָכֵ֤ן ׀ שָׂמַ֣ח לִ֭בִּי וַיָּ֣גֶל כְּבוֹדִ֑י אַף־בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י יִשְׁכֹּ֥ן לָבֶֽטַח׃ כִּ֤י ׀ לֹא־תַעֲזֹ֣ב נַפְשִׁ֣י לִשְׁא֑וֹל לֹֽא־תִתֵּ֥ן חֲ֝סִידְךָ֗ לִרְא֥וֹת שָֽׁחַת׃	Therefore my heart is joyous, my guts feel delight. My body is serene, for You will not forsake my soul to torment, neither will You let down Your devotee.
תּֽוֹדִיעֵנִי֮ אֹ֤רַח חַ֫יִּ֥ים שֹׂ֣בַע שְׂ֭מָחוֹת אֶת־פָּנֶ֑יךָ נְעִמ֖וֹת בִּימִינְךָ֣ נֶֽצַח׃	Please! Make me know the path of life. My complete happiness is in Your presence; may I forever feel the pleasures of Your kindness.

מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד.	A Song of David.
יהוה, מִי יָגוּר בְּאָהֳלֶךָ, מִי יִשְׁכֹּן בְּהַר קָדְשֶׁךָ׃	YHVH, who may live in Your house? Who may dwell on Your holy mountain?
הוֹלֵךְ תָּמִים וּפֹעֵל צֶדֶק וְדֹבֵר אֱמֶת בִּלְבָבוֹ׃ לֹא־רָגַל עַל לְשֹׁנוֺ, לֹא־עָשָֹה לְרֵעֵהוּ רָעָה, וְחֶרְפָּה לֹא־נָשָֹא עַל קְרֹבוֹ׃ נִבְזֶה בְּעֵינָיו נִמְאָס וְאֶת־יִרְאֵי יהוה יְכַבֵּד, נִשְׁבַּע לְהָרַע וְלֹא יָמִר׃ כַּסְפּוֹ לֹא־נָתַן בְּנֶשֶׁךְ וְשֹׁחַד עַל־נָקִי לֹא לָקָח,	Those who are upright; who do justly; They speak the truth within their hearts. They do not slander others, or wrong them, Or bring shame upon them. They have contempt for the lawless, And honor those who revere the YHVH They give their word, and, do not retract. They do not exploit others, they never take bribes.
עֹשֵׂה־אֵלֶּה לֹא יִמּוֹט לְעוֹלם:	Those who act this way shall never be shaken.

This translation of Psalms 15 can be found in HaAvodah SheBaLev – the Service of the Heart (Kehilat Kol HaNeshama, Jerusalem, 2007). “Adonai” is used as a circumlocution for the Tetragrammaton in the English translation. I have replaced ‘Adonai’ with ‘YHVH.’ –Aharon Varady.
