Because tonight we cannot join together with our extended family, friends and community in celebration. This night is different because, as we tell the story of our people from slavery to freedom from Egypt to the Promised Land, we must also tell about our own time, about our own plagues and immediate needs.

The mystics taught us that Egypt was not only a historical place of enslavement, but as the Hebrew word for Egypt, Mitsrayim, suggests it is any state of narrowness, loneliness and fear a person experiences — a feeling many of us, and those we love, know too well during this COVID-19 pandemic. The Passover story is also about our individual and collective efforts to leave whatever narrow place we are in.

This night is different because we are not only remembering and reliving our shared history, but we are deeply mindful of our current crisis, and the urgency of learning about and speaking out about the impact of this plague — and many other plagues — happening around the globe to Jews and all people.

But each of us, and every Jew around the world, though we are more physically separated than ever, is strengthened because of our sense of Peoplehood. Despite all the ways in which we are separated, by distance; by the differences between our various movements, and our personal, national and religious identities; today — more than ever — we sense our connectedness and our mutual responsibility. Especially now, this Passover, we can commit ourselves to our shared future, to our common destiny.

Our Common Destiny is a new global initiative that gathers us together as one people, and we offer this addition, a new ‘kavvanah’ or additional reading for your Seder Table. You can also say it whenever and wherever you eat matsah this Passover. This insert was created by Our Common Destiny, which aims to strengthen global Jewry by linking Jewish communities worldwide to a shared set of values, shaped by the input of our diverse global community. You can add your voice here.

In the profound opening of the Haggadah, there is a Jewish message with universal reach: we need each other, and we need to be sure that, as it says in the Haggadah, “let all who are hungry enter and eat; and all who are in need come and celebrate.” May all of humanity hear the response of the Jewish people: We will uphold our collective responsibility for each other and for the world.

This is the meaning of the Passover Matsah this year. While we are a generation who has been divided, we must now come together to imagine a new future, a common destiny based on shared values and respond to the needs of all.

	This is the Bread of Our Affliction, HaLakhma Anya, This is our shared story of suffering and freedom.
	As we hold the matsah this year, whether with our families or completely alone, May we experience our connection to the story of the Jewish people; to our values and to our shared future.
	As we partake in this bread of memory and hope, may we never forget our Exodus story and our promise to ourselves that even in our new, more limited freedom, we will not stand by when others are suffering. Let all who are in need, know that we are with them. As we ready ourselves to eat this hard bread of affliction, let us also prepare ourselves to respond to the suffering and isolation all around the globe.
	May all who are suffering, whether they are sick, afraid, hungry, suffering from domestic violence or any other plague, know that we see you, we hear you, and we will work together to respond to you.
	May all who are mourning find comfort and may we collectively find ways to console them.
	May we continue to support medical personnel, as well as all service workers who are responding with all their capacities, generosity, care and self-sacrifice.
	May all who are suffering now be healed quickly;
	May all who are in need, know that the Jewish people will respond with the best of ourselves.
	May we find new ways to learn about each other and to learn together, even virtually. Let us assure each other that we, the Jewish People, share a common destiny and we will create it together.
	May we look into the eyes of those around us and those who we see from afar, and assure each other that we are mutually responsible for one another, for the health and safety and spiritual well-being of ourselves, our communities, and for all of humanity today, as we were then.
	This year, we are here. We are broken apart, but next year may we find new beginnings, a new commitment to each other, a new wholeness, and a new common destiny.

	Just for a Moment
	A good story gives us a hint of the happy ending but then whisks it away with a giant or a curse or a virus or a fire.
	After all, ever after isn’t forever. Not in a real story. It just means time.
	But, Dear God, our story has had too much of fiery sky and flooded ground, and the hint of the happy is washed and burned, feels so very faded, and we need more rainbow skies and dewy ground, to remind us of the happy.
	So, Holy One, just for a moment, please: let lovers find each other, let friends forgive, let our souls heal, let love be the loudest sound our hearts make. Just for a moment.
	Remind us of the promise of a world reborn.
	Or, perhaps, You’re the One who’s waiting to be reminded.

	Our God, and God of all Life, We call you Oséh — Maker^[1] Job 25:2. Yotsér — Crafter^[2] Genesis 2:7. Poél — Worker.^[3] Exodus 15:17. You, Who labored to build this world in which we live Who calls us to be Po’alei Tsedek, workers of justice^[4] Psalms 15:2. — We call to you.
	Be with all those who labor in the midst of this global pandemic. Shelter those who grow our food in the field. Guard those who bring healing in lab and clinic, in hospital and pharmacy. Guide in peace those who deliver basic needs by road, track, and air. Uplift those bent low bearing loads in manufacturing and sanitation. Send love to those who connect us through wire, wave, and cable.
	Provide companionship to those who work in solitude, ease to those who work in anguish, safety to those who step into harm’s way, dignity to all whose labor benefits us.
	As they raise up their souls to grant us all life^[5] Deuteronomy 24:15. may we repay them in fairness and righteousness. May our lawmakers and employers assure them a living wage, health care and sick leave education, documentation, citizenship and the right to organize.
	All the rights, human and Divine due to all beings created in Your image.
	And let us say: Amen.

בְּחִיל וּרְעָדָה, בְּהוֹדָיה וּבִפְלִיאָה, הֲרֵנִי מְקַבֵּל עֲלֵי אֶת מִצְווַת הַבּוֹרֵא ”וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאוֹד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵכֶם“. (דברים ד:טו)	With fear and trembling, ^[1] cf. The Viddui serves as a final prayer of atonement for a dying person, and a final at-one-ment; the traditional liturgy places the soul of the dying in God’s hands. According to Jewish law, Viddui is said when death seems imminent, and may be spoken by the dying person, their family members, or a rabbi.

Below is a Viddui written for Jews who are losing a beloved to a plague, and who may not be able to be physically present or close to their loved one.

	Take a cup of water in your left hand, pour it over your entire right hand, covering up to the wrist. Take the cup in your right hand, and pour it over your entire left hand, covering up to the wrist. Feel your feet connected to the floor. And breathe.
	God Nowhere and Everywhere, God of grounding and water and air, God Who still hears the echoes of my ancestors and their prayers: Hear mine now.
	Hear my heartbreak as my words reach up to You, Angry and agonized and afraid.
	See how my arms are empty when all I need is to hold my loved one __________(name) in the moments before their death.
	I am not reconciled to their loss. There is no part of me that rises up to bless You now.
	And still, I know that You are with me: You are the Source; You are the ground and the water and the air; You are the filaments that link me to every other mourner in this moment. You are the rope that binds me to my loved one, __________(name), and reminds me that my life, my memories, and my soul are bound up with theirs.
	(name)__________ has been my ground and my water and my air. To be sharing none of these with them at this time, as they leave this world, is beyond what I should bear. And still I bless and acknowledge the Source of All, Who granted me the gift of growing with them, knowing them, and loving them up to and through this moment.
	Their lives were full. My heart is full. And my heart is breaking.
	I know that their life and their death is in Your hands. May they be blessed with life, O God. And if they will die, when they die, shelter them in Your arms and carry them gently into the wideness of All That Is To Come.
שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהוָ֥ה ׀ אֶחָֽד׃ (דברים ו:ד)	Hear me now, as I cry out to You: Shma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Eḥad.^[1] Deuteronomy 6:4. הָאֵל הָעוֹנֶה בְּעֵת צָרָה וּמוֹשִׁיעַ, הָרֹפֵא לִשְׁבוּרֵי לֵב וּמְחַבֵּשׁ לְעַצְּבוֹתָם (תהלים קמז:ג), שֶׁחָלַק מֵחָכְמָתוֹ לְבָשָׂר וָדָם אֲשֶׁר הֵבִיאוּ לִיצִירַת חִסּוּן זֶה.	El who answers in times of distress and saves, “Healer of broken hearts who binds their wounds” (Psalm 147:3), who shares divine wisdom with flesh and blood that has resulted in the creation of this vaccine:

אָבִינוּ שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם	Heavenly Father, We turn to You at this time of deep global concern, to bestow Your mercy upon all the inhabitants of our vulnerable world, which is now so seriously afflicted.
כִּי אַעֲלֶה אֲרֻכָה לָךְ וּמִמַּכּוֹתַיִךְ אֶרְפָּאֵךְ נְאֻם־ה׳ (ירמיה ל:יז)	Almighty God, who sustains the living with lovingkindness, supports the fallen and heals the sick, grant consolation to the bereaved families and send a speedy and complete recovery to all who have contracted the virus, as the Prophet Jeremiah declared: “For I will restore health unto you, and I will heal you of your wounds, says the Lord”.^[1] Jeremiah 30:17.
	Bless with strength those who are suffering. Bless with resilience those in isolation. Bless with hope those who are despondent. Bless with wisdom all those who seek a cure and bless with compassion all those who offer comfort.

Pitum haḲetoret (the compounding of the incense): balm, onycha, galbanum, frankincense (70 maneh); myrrh, cassia, spikenard, saffron (16 maneh); costus (12 maneh), aromatic bark (3 maneh), cinnamon (9 maneh), [Added to the spices were] nine ḳab of Karsina lye. Three se’ah and three ḳab of Cyprus wine — if Cyprus wine could not be obtained, strong white wine might be substituted for it — a fourth of a ḳab of Sodom salt, and a minute quantity of ma’aleh ashan [a smoke-producing ingredient]. It was taught in a baraita: Rebbi Natan says: A minute quantity of Jordan amber was also required. If one added honey to the mixture, he rendered the incense unfit for sacred use; and if he left out one of its required ingredients, he was subject to the penalty of death. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: The balm required for the incense is a resin exuding from the balsam trees. Why was Karsina lye used? To refine the onycha. Why was Cyprus wine employed? To steep the onycha in it so as to make it more pungent. Though urine might have been suitable for that purpose, it was not decent to bring it into the Temple.

May God who blessed our distant ancestors, Adam and Ḥavah, Noaḥ and his family, bless and heal those stricken with the coronavirus and the plague that has afflicted China and threatens the entire world. May the blessed Holy One be overcome by mercy for them, so as to heal, restore, strengthen and revive them. Send them complete healing from heaven, to both body and soul, together with all who are ill.

Hoshana Rabbah is a time for prayer, where we call out to God one final time, a last vestige of the Yamim Noraim, asking for Divine salvation. We recite a litany of Hoshana prayers, asking God to “Save Us” in the new year.

This year we need salvation more than ever, with all the challenges the world is facing. I hope people find this new Hoshana text helpful in formulating our requests this year.

There I was with my sleeve up, eyes sealed, heart open, as the nurse busily prepared the dose. I took a deep inhale and realized I needed some sort of prayer handy for this awesome occasion. The go-to-prayer for awe’some occasions – Ana b’Khoaḥ – naturally jumped to my lips. It’s a liturgical beauty, with the 42 letters of God’s name encrypted in its terse seven lines. It’s a Ḳabbalistic gem. I figured I couldn’t go wrong with that and that the nurse was probably used to prayerful mumblings at moments like this….so I started my recitation. And then, as if divinely choreographed (well, of course it was divinely choreographed), at that fateful long-awaited moment of contact between needle and flesh, I arrived at line 5: “חסין קדוש ברב טובך, נהל עדתֶך” (“Holy Protector in your great goodness, guide your community”). — I recited this line like never before as I realized the poignancy of that very poetry at that very moment. I realized that the term ‘Ḥasin Ḳadosh’ means ‘Sacred Vaccinator’. Just like the Hebrew word for vaccine is ḥisun חיסון.

Right there encoded into this ḳabbalistic prayer, we call out to the Divine Vaccinator. I said it with all my heart and then some, realizing so palpably that the Divine Innoculator was right there in the sterile Meuḥedet Hall, gifting me with healing, gifting our world with healing, in tandem with the myriad doctors, scientists, health professionals and eager recipients the globe over.

I felt an affirmative rush of Yes, we are being gifted a ‘ḥasin ḳadosh‘ a most holy Innoculation…so holy and yet so earthly and mundane.

But that prayer was not just one of thanks and recognition, it was even more a prayer of deep begging. Begging for that great protective Force to ‘nahel adatekha’ – to guide our edah, our community. The Jewish community is so direly in need of guidance in this pandemic; guidance precisely around the contested issue of this vaccine and its rightness.

We so direly need leaders…we need THE Leader.

So, yes, please Holy Vaccinator, steer us, usher us forward in the direction of highest goodness and health. May we be guided from on high and from down below too.

	Thank you, human diligence, for generations of curiosity and endless care.
	Thank you, scientists, for your striving minds, for your daring to dare.
	Thank you for the accumulated wisdom of the ages,
	Thank you to all of medical histories’ unsung sages.
	Thank you for every lab coat and And every last microscope that gives us hope against the natural foes of disease, worry, and woe.
	And for those who fear this God-given, humanly-written, remedy of a vaccine… I beg You, Sacred Innoculator, in Your abundant mercy guide them in the direction of immediate healing and relief.

	Holy Healing One, May the vaccine I’m about to receive be a sign that healing is arriving once again in our world, for all Your worried children.
	May my body’s temporary discomfort sensitize me to the needs of this fragile world that remain invisible to the eye.
	May my body’s pent-up tension, held back during an unfathomable year of constriction and stress, be channeled in a healthy way for those around me.
	May the scientists and doctors and nurses who have served as your angels and saved our world be granted restoration of soul and healing of mind.

	Master of the Universe: You who grant wisdom to researchers, doctors, nurses, and all those involved in healing ~ support them and give them strength to continue their life-preserving work.
	May I, with You, protect my children from all harm. And, when I can’t, may they rely on those around them. Shelter them in Your wings, and sustain them, invigorate them, keep them safe in body and spirit. May we merit to raise these children to adulthood, instilling in them a love of community, care for their world, and engagement with what is right.

	INTRODUCTION (may be read. For safety reasons, it is obviously envisaged that everybody will use their own items rather than sharing communal ones. Out of respect for those whose energy levels may be sapped, it is suggested the ceremony be kept short.)
	Havdallah marks division. One moment, it is still Shabbat; the next, a new week begins. Yet we know that, in our own lives, division is rarely absolute. One moment blends into the next, just as the sun sets gradually. Those who still suffer the pains and anxiety of covid, long after the height of their infection has passed, recognise this: there has not been a single turning-point, but rather a gradual process, with ups and downs.
	Havdallah also marks cycles, and these are more familiar to us. Every week it rolls around again. Sometimes it will come at the end of a week which has been brimming with positive experiences; other times, it closes a trying week of woe.
	Either way, we celebrate havdallah, that astonishing ceremony which marks the moment that everything changes, and the way that nothing changes. We think of all those whose week has not been what it might have been, who have not yet had the separation, the division, between illness and health. Our senses have been flummoxed by the virus. We may not all be able to taste the wine of a traditional havdallah, but water serves us all equally. So, now, we feel the cool freshness of life-giving water, we use our lungs to breathe in the sweetness of the pomander – whether we smell it or not – and our eyes to yearn towards the light of the candle.
	And we use our voices to recognise the pain amongst us and to ask for healing.
	An opening psalm.
עוּרָה לָמָּה תִישַׁן אֲדֹנָי הָקִיצָה אַל־תִּזְנַח לָנֶצַח׃ לָמָּה־פָנֶיךָ תַסְתִּיר תִּשְׁכַּח עׇנְיֵנוּ וְלַחֲצֵנוּ׃ כִּי שָׁחָה לֶעָפָר נַפְשֵׁנוּ דָּבְקָה לָאָרֶץ בִּטְנֵנוּ׃ קוּמָה עֶזְרָתָה לָּנוּ וּפְדֵנוּ לְמַעַן חַסְדֶּךָ׃ (תהלים מד:כד-כז)	Rouse Yourself; why do You sleep, O Sovereign? King Solomon doubted the minister would be able to find such a thing. Still, the intrepid minister set out. He travelled the kingdom, but to no avail. Returning to Jerusalem, he found himself in a shabby neighbourhood where there was a market. He noticed a merchant selling some odd pieces of jewelry spread out on a threadbare rug. Desperate, the minister explained to the merchant what he was seeking – a ring that could turn a happy person sad, and a sad person happy.
