This is a faithful transcription of the תחינה פון ראש חודש בענטשן (“Tkhine for the Rosh Ḥodesh Blessing”) which first appeared in סידור קרבן מנחה (Siddur Korban Minḥah), 1844. Translation adapted from Rivka Zakutinsky as found in Techinas: A Voice from the Heart, “As Only A Woman Can Pray” (New York: Aura Press, 1992), p.46-61. There the tkhine is attributed to Leah Horowitz, but this attribution can only be considered pseudepigraphic. –A.N. Varady

The Teḥina for the blessing of the new moon is said each Shabbat Mevorkhim, addition to the specific Teḥinah for that month. The prayer is recited when the Aron HaḲodesh is opened, signifying the opening of the Heavenly gates of mercy (an especially propitious time to pray for health, livelihood, and all good).

When the wicked Nimrod arose against him, you sent your help to cool the fire of the furnace, that Avraham be saved. The second misfortune that happened in this month is that on the 10th day Nebukhadnezzar, King of Babylon, laid siege with his soldiers to our capital city, Jerusalem! Woe is to us and woe is to our years, that our crown has been taken from our head. Every year we fast on this day, so that Hashem, may their name be blessed, have mercy upon us and return us to our land.

He enacted harsh decrees upon the Jews, and did not allow them to circumcise their children or to observe the Shabbat or Kashrut. They placed into the Holy Temple a likeness of their gods and defiled the holy vessels and the oil of the sanctuary. It was dark and bitter for the Jews, but you with your great mercy, came to their aid and gave the heroes of Antiokhus’s camp into the hands of the Jews, who were weakened from not eating even a spoon of fleishig broth for a long time (as they didn’t want to eat any non-kosher food). After the 24th day of Kislev the Jews went into the Holy Temple and threw out the idols and all the impurities and cleansed everything and started the daily services in holiness. When they came to light the menorah that night they found no pure olive oil. Only one small cruse still had the seal of the Kohen Gadol, enough for only one night. You performed a miracle from that small cruse of oil for it became as a well and gave oil for eight days till pure oil could be brought from afar.

Dear Father, I remember the kind of love to which your children became bound to your Torah in this month, because their eyes saw that through their pilgrimages, they were blessed with your divine guidance. Every family coming home suffered no loss and found all their possessions just as they left them. No flocks of sheep, no wolf bothered them, birds flew in the house and around the gardens, no migrant birds tore them up. Stores of produce, cupboards with silver and gold were not touched, even though there were bad neighbors surrounding the land of Yisra’el who sharpened their teeth on Jewish wealth and land. When Jews went away to Yisra’el for the pilgrimage, the neighbors had an opportunity to seize everything and to take a whole city and to settle in it because no Jews remained in their houses. So who watched over them? Your supervision watched over them, as you promised, “No man will lust after your land or your wealth when you will be seen before the Creator of the world in the Holy Temple” (Exodus 34:24). In this month all the Jews, both great and small, saw with their own eyes that the Torah is from Heaven. How beloved became your Torah and your Holy Name. We greatly desire to feel this too. I beg your mercy, that you send us the Righteous Redeemer to lead us with pride to our homeland. Build for us the Third Holy Temple with your own hands, so that it should stand forever. There we will serve you in holiness, with great love the way we long to do.

In the month of Marḥeshvan, another significant thing happened. On the 11th day, our mother Raḥel bore her son Binyamin, and because it was a difficult delivery, she passed away from this world. We beg, “Stand up, devoted mother Raḥel from your grave, and open the doors of mercy, and awaken the compassion of our Almighty God that they fulfill that which they promised you.” When the Jews were taken into exile, not far from the gravesite of our mother Raḥel, the Jews begged of the enemy that they be allowed to go to her grave, and when they came to the grave, they began to cry bitterly: “Mother, Mother! How can you watch this, that they lead us into exile, and they make us suffer.” Our mother Raḥel went up to Hashem with a bitter cry and said: “Master of the Universe, your mercy is greater than the mercy of a human being. I had pity on my sister Leah, when my father exchanged me for her and gave her to my husband Yaakov. Only out of pity for her did I give her the signs that my husband gave me, so that he could think that it was I. This was especially difficult for me. You, God, are Merciful, therefore certainly you should have mercy upon my children.” Then a voice from Heaven answered, “You are right. I will redeem your children from all their troubles and I will take them out of their pain and help them always.”’ So, too, awake yourself now, Mother Raḥel, and arise from your grave, and stand in front of the Resplendent Throne, and beg for your children. They are compared to lambs who wander in the desert amongst the wild animals, beg YHVH to have pity on them and bless the month of Marḥeshvan for blessing and success. Amen.

Awaken Binyamin, son of Yaakov our father. Stand at the right hand of your mother Raḥel and help her plead before the Lord of Mercy, this month of Marḥeshvan, in which you were born. Ask that your merit assist us during this month. When the accuser arises against the Jews over the sin of “the sale of Yosef,” when he was sold by his brothers as a servant, because the Satan still follows us to this very day, causing enmity between one brother and the other, and so to nullify the promise that Hashem made us swear to them, that we should love one another. We suffer for not keeping this. In the month of Marḥeshvan, Tsidkiyahu was punished because he broke a promise and Nebuchadnezzar slaughtered his children in front of his eyes. Thereafter Nebuchadnezzar made him blind. And at a later time 12,000 Jews were martyred for your Holy Name. On the 26th of Marḥeshvan, Jews were banished from England and on the same day, out of France. All of this is due to the sin of sinat ḥinam (baseless hatred) that still rules us. Let Hashem remember the merit of Binyamin, that he was not part of the scheme of selling Yosef. He bore a large portion of our father Yaakov’s pain and suffering, and gave his children names symbolic of the troubles of his brother Yosef. May his merit shield us, so that we throw away jealousy and hatred, and because of this, we will be saved from our troubles, and this month of Marḥeshvan will be sanctified for us and for all Yisra’el for life, and health and sustenance with everything good, Amen.

װען אַ לײבּ שרײַט װער זאָל זיך ניט פאָרכטן? דער װאָרט ארי״ה בּאטײַט (די אל״ף מאכט) אֶלוּל, (די רי״ש מאכט) רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, (די יו״ד מאכט) יוֹם כִּפּוּר, (די ה״א מאכט) הוֹשַׁעֲנָא רַבָּה, דאָס הײסט װען עס קומען די דאָזיגע הײליגע און פאָרכטיגע טעג, װער זאָל זיך ניט פאָרכטן? Dear God, remember us in the merit of our having received your Holy Torah, and of having become your beloved nation. When you [first] went to Yishma’el and Esav, they didn’t want to accept your Torah. Therefore, in this merit remember favorably and bless us. Enlighten our children’s eyes to Torah, that they should keep your mitsvot. Be merciful over us for we are likened to a woman whose husband has gone on a long journey and left her in poverty and pain. She hopes every day that her husband will come and that her fortune will be raised. So, too, is your nation Yisra’el. You have distanced yourself from us, we are likened to a living widow. [But] we hope in you, dear God, that you will turn toward us, and will again talk to us “mouth to mouth,” the way you spoke to us on Mt. Sinai. Rebuild your crown city, the beloved Yerushalayim, quickly and soon, and may the beauty of your nation, the Holy Temple, be built for us so that we can serve you as we did in previous years. Amen. Torah, Torah! Go up in heaven and be an intercessor for your children, Yisra’el. Remind the Master of the Cosmos how much blood has been spilled on your behalf in the month of Sivan. How many righteous ones were martyred for the sanctification of your Name and how much blood of small children killed at their mother’s breast? It is impossible to imagine the suffering that we had in those times, because they did not want to desecrate your Holy Covenant of the Torah, nor to mar her laws. Therefore, it is fitting for you to recall this merit before the Holy Throne. This blood should be likened to the blood of the sacrificial offerings that were sprinkled on the altar. Do it for the sake of the small school children that learn your Holy Torah. Bless us this month of Sivan, that we should merit to have good children and be able to raise them in your beloved Torah, to good deeds. We say Amen.

Remember us now, beloved God, in her merit, for she sang with the women when the Jews went out of the Sea of Reeds, as it states, “Miriam the prophet, the sister of Aharon, took the drum in her hand, and all the women went out after her with drums and instruments, and Miriam sang, ‘Sing to the beloved YHVH, for (haShem) has done great miracles; the horse and the rider (haShem) has cast into the depths of the sea.’”^[3] Exodus 15:20-21 So should we merit to sing with all the righteous women and righteous men when Moshiaḥ comes. To the best of my ability, this is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָה לְשַׁבָּת מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חוֺדֶשׁ נִיסָן (“Tkhine for Shabbat Mevorkhim Rosh Ḥodesh Nisan”) which appeared in תחנות מקרא קודש (Teḥinot Miqra Ḳodesh, Widow and Brothers Romm, Vilna 1877) before its adaptation in Shas Tkhine Ḥadashe (Ben-Tsiyon Alfes 1910), the source from which this translation was made. English translation adapted slightly from Techinas: A Voice from the Heart “As Only A Woman Can Pray” by Rivka Zakutinsky (Aura Press, 1992). –A.N. Varady
