This is a blessing which I originally wrote while working at the Leo Baeck Education Center, Haifa, for the International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2012. It is based on the 4th of the Seven Blessings in the Jewish wedding ceremony, with additional quotes from our tradition. This blessing is included in Tfilat HaAdam prayer book, 2021.

Blessed are you,
Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who created Humanity in God’s image, [in the image of the likeness of God’s pattern] male and female God created them,[1] Genesis 1:27, Genesis 5:2. blessed them and called them Adam, so we may learn that each soul in an entire world, each spirit is a divine candle,[2] Proverbs 20:27. we all come from one source, the One God created us all,[3] Malachi 2:10. our faces are different[4] Talmud Yerushalmi Berakhot 63b. and our thoughts are different,[5] Rav Quq, הראי״ה קוק, עין אי״ה על מסכת ברכות (Ayin Aya on Tractate Berakhot): ככל שנעמיק להתבונן במבנה האופי הפרטי של בני האדם, נתפלא יותר ויותר על השוני הרב הקיים ביניהם. שוני זה, מגזרת החכמה העליונה הוא בא. אילו היו כל בני האדם שווים זה לזה בהלך רוחם, לא היה כל אדם ואדם וכל חוג וחוג מושך לכיוונו בצורה קיצונית וקנאית כל־כך, ומתוך כך היה העולם נחסר דעות, כיוונים ורעיונות שונים ומפרים. (“The deeper we look into the structure of the private character of human beings, the more and more we will be surprised at the great difference between them. This difference derives from the region of Supernal Wisdom.
