Eternal God,
whose deeds are righteous
and who acts for the oppressed (Psalms 103:6),
we give thanks before You
for the European Court of Human Rights.
|
|
|
After the horrors of the Shoah
and the bloodshed of the Second World War,
European leaders gathered together
and resolved, once and for all,
to let right be done by every human being.
In recognition of the Divine spark in each one of us,
they agreed laws and appointed judges,
and for over six decades the institutions they created
have upheld and defended Your teachings of justice and mercy.

Life
Dignity
Freedom
Liberty

of the judges of the European Court of Human Rights,
be present in their courtrooms,
and bless their work.
Teach national leaders to exercise their powers for good,
and grant them the courage to do what is right,
not what is easy.

Bio: Gabriel Kanter-Webber is rabbi of Brighton and Hove Progressive Synagogue, Sussex, UK. He was born in Kingston-on-Thames. After studying Politics & International Relations at Sussex University, he spent a year as a youth worker for LJY-Netzer, the youth movement of Liberal Judaism, before entering Leo Baeck College to study for the rabbinate. He has served in many congregations as a student, including three years with the York Liberal Jewish Community.
