”וְלִירוּשָׁלַֽיִם עִירְ֒ךָ בְּרַחֲמִים תָּשׁוּב
וְתִשְׁכּוֹן בְּתוֹכָהּ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ
וּבְנֵה אוֹתָהּ בְּקָרוֹב בְּיָמֵֽינוּ בִּנְיַן עוֹלָם…“

“And to Jerusalem Your city return in mercy,
and dwell therein as You have said;
build it soon, in our days, in a lasting structure…”

As I head Eastward,
Holy One,
and pause for prayer in an airport chapel,
one of several earthly portals
into awareness of You,
I wonder:
|
|
|
Have we been capitalizing certain words to our own detriment?
Perhaps the reflective act of prayer might one day
render this Jerusalem paragraph entirely lowercase, human,
claiming as our own the obligation
too often outsourced to You:
|
|
|
to the heart of jerusalem
you must return
with a merciful heart.
when you arrive,
build something eternally worthy,
as you always say you will.
do it today.
