Master of all Worlds and Ruler of all rulers! We come before you now to bless and sanctify the month of Tammuz. On the second day of Rosh Ḥodesh our mother Raḥel gave birth to her dear son Yosef the Righteous. May it be your will, Hashem our god, to awaken for us the merit of our mother Raḥel. You heard her pleas when she suffered great anguish because she didn’t have any children, and you gave her her treasured son Yosef. So too listen to the pleas of all those who don’t have any children. They should be remembered to have good children just like Yosef the Righteous. Let our children not be taken from us and let us see much greatness from them just as our father Yaakov saw, in the end, the greatness of his son Yosef the Righteous. Let their greatness not be impaired. |

Holy God! Yosef the Righteous withstood the great test of the enticements of the wife of his master. Even though he was young, living in the hot climate of Mitsrayim and far from his family, with no one there to be embarrassed from, still he overruled the impulses of immorality and remained pure and spotless, because he was ashamed to do such a disgraceful thing before you. So dear God, help our sons and daughters and especially those that are torn from their home; they should have shame before you because you see everything. Let them not be soiled with the transgression of immorality and let them remain till the end of their lives clean and spotless in the merit of Yosef the Righteous, who was blessed by his father Yaakov with abundant blessings, and by Moshe who, with great exuberance, blessed Yosef’s portion in the Erets Yisra’el. So too bless us in this month, that the produce of the fields not be burned by the heat, nor eaten by locusts. Master of the World, “Fill our storehouses with plenty” from your blessed hand. Let there not be hunger nor scarcity, God forbid. Your blessing should be fulfilled in us, “I will give rain in its time and the earth will give her produce and all the trees, even the trees of the forest, will give fruit,”[1] Leviticus 26:4 so that we can serve you in peace with love. Amen. |
This is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָה לְשַׁבָּת מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חוֺדֶשׁ תַּמוּז (“Tkhine for Shabbat Mevorkhim Rosh Ḥodesh Tamuz”) which appeared in תחנות מקרא קודש (Teḥinot Miqra Ḳodesh, Widow and Brothers Romm, Vilna 1877) before its adaptation in Shas Tkhine Ḥadashe (Ben-Tsiyon Alfes 1910), the source from which this translation was made. English translation adapted slightly from Techinas: A Voice from the Heart “As Only A Woman Can Pray” by Rivka Zakutinsky (Aura Press, 1992). –A.N. Varady
