גאָט דוא בישט הײליג אונ האשט גיהײליגט דײַן פאָלק יִשׂרָאֵל אונ האָשט גיהײַליגט דעם שַׁבָּת דוא בישט אלײן אונ אונזערע עלטערין האָשטו אױש דער וױילט אונטער אלע פעלקער צוא דײַן דינסט אלײן אונ צוא רוען האָשטו דער וױילט דעם שַׁבָּת אלײן צוא עהרין אונ זענפטיגען זיך צוא לײַכטין ליכט אונ צוא האָבין פרײד אונ לוסט אין דײַנעם דינשט הײַנט אין דײַנעם הײליגין שַׁבָּת װעלכין מיר זײַנען שולדיג צו האלטין מיט אלע זאכין אז אײַן חָתָן דיא כַּלָה נאָך רײַדין אונזרע חֲכָמִים דאָשׂ זײא האָבין גירופין דעם שַׁבָּת כַּלָה אונ איך האָב שױן אָן גיצונדין דיא ליכט נאָך גיבאָטין דײַנע חֲכָמִים דיא דא װײַשׂין דײַן הײליגע תּוֹרָה צוא לערנען אונ צוא הײליגין דײַן נאמען אין דײַן תּוֹרָה דוא	You, Holy God, have hallowed your people Yisrael and the Shabbes. You are the only God, and you have chosen only our ancestors – from among all peoples – to serve you. And you have chosen the Shabbes alone for rest, for honor, and for blessing, for lighting candles and for joy and delight in your service. Today is your Shabbes ḳodesh, which we are obliged to maintain with great care as a ḥosen cares for his kallah.^[1] Louis Ginzberg, Legends of the Jews, III, 99. See also the kabbalistic Sabbath hymn, “Lekha Dodi.” I repeat what our sages said when they called the Shabbes a kallah. I have already lit the candles according to the requirements of your sages who know your holy Torah and who know how to study it and hallow your Name and Your Torah.
אלמאכטיגער גאָט גיב מיר אונ מײַן מאן אונ מײַנע קינדער אונ מײַן הױז גיזינד דעם הײליגין שַׁבָּת צוא רוען צוא הײליקײַט אונ זעניפטיקײַט אונ באהיט אונז פאר אלע בײזע גישעכנש די דאָ פלעגין צו קומן הײנט פון װעגין דאשׂ מַזָל פון דעם בײזין שטערין. וױא איך טוא אָן צינדין ליכט דעם שַׁבָּת צו עהרין הער פון דער גאנצער װעלט גיב מיר קינדער דאָשׂ זײַא זאלן לײַכטין אין דער תּוֹרָה אונ שיק אונז די בְּרָכָה מיט דעם גוטין מַלְאָךְ דר דאָ גײַט בײַא דיא רעכטע האנט פון דעם מענטשין אונ דער בײזער מַלְאָךְ זאָל דרױף אָמֵן זאָגין אונ מיר זאָלין זוֹכֶה זײַן דאָשׂ דו זאָלשט אונז מאכין ארבין דעם טאָג װאָש איז גאָר שַׁבָּת דאָשׂ איז גימײנט אז מיר זאָלין דער לעבין דיא צײַט פון תְּחִייַת הַמֵתִים גילױבט בישטו גאָט דער דאָ לעבט אײביג אָמֵן׃	Almighty God, give me and my husband and my children and my household this Shabbes ḳodesh for rest, for holiness, and for blessedness. Protect us from all evil events which occur nowadays because of the unlucky conjunction of the planets. As I have lit the candles to honor the Shabbes, Lord of the whole universe, give me children who will shine in the light of the Torah. Send us a blessing with the good angel who walks at a person’s right hand, and may the evil angel respond “amen.” May we merit that You cause us to inherit that day which is wholly Shabbes,^[2] Midrash Tamid 7.4. which means: May we live until the time of the resurrection of the dead. Praised be You, God, who lives forever. Amen.

I have transcribed it without any changes from The Merit of Our Mothers בזכות אמהות A Bilingual Anthology of Jewish Women’s Prayers, compiled by Rabbi Tracy Guren Klirs, Cincinnati: Hebrew Union College Press, 1992. shgiyot mi yavin, ministarot nakeni. Tracy Guren Klirs (translation)

Rabbi Tracy Guren Klirs received her B.A. in Yiddish literature at the University of Chicago and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1977. She was ordained as a rabbi from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 1984. Her book, The Merit of Our Mothers: A Bilingual Anthology of Jewish Women’s Prayers, was published by HUC Press in 1992. She serves as the rabbi of Temple Kol Tikvah in Davidson, North Carolina.
