El, the compassionate one who does greatness beyond understanding and miracles and wonders without measure.[1] Maariv, first blessing before the Shema (nusaḥ Ashkenaz). Cf. Job 9:10 We come now to bless and sanctify the month of Nisan, in which month, dear God, you did many miracles and great wonders for us. Bless this month that we merit to be redeemed from all oppression. Just as you redeemed your nation Yisra’el from Mitsrayim, and split the sea for them, and the Jews sang to you, so too, Master of the Cosmos, redeem us so that we can sing to you of the miracles and wonders that you will do with us. May we, indeed, sing a new song to you, Hallelu-Yah! |

Open your eyes and see, dear God, with what effort your dear nation observes your mitsvot which you commanded them to do in this month of Nisan: To clean out the ḥamets from their house and to eat matsot all seven days of Pesaḥ. Though it is difficult to run their household with their incomes, they nevertheless uphold your desires and observe your mitsvot. Therefore, dear God, send abundance and blessing to all the Jews, and protect us with your holiness, so that we not stumble over prohibited ḥamets on Pesaḥ. Let the sacred holiday of Pesaḥ come easily to us. Let us not, God forbid, be beholden to human beings for life sustaining gifts.[2] literally, gifts of flesh and blood Help us be able and willing to support needy householders so that they too have what is necessary to celebrate the sacred holiday. Master of the Cosmos, we now bless the month of Nisan, during which we observe the festival of Passover, so called because you, God, passed over the houses of Yisra’el, when you passed through the land of Mitsrayim to put to death all their firstborn. The Jews smeared the blood of the Korban Pesaḥ as mezuzot on the lintel of the doorpost, so that the Destroyer (mashḥit) would not have permission to go into the home of Jews. Thus, may you scold all destroyers (mashḥitim), that they not come to the doors of our houses to do evil to us Jews, to our children our grandchildren. Save our entire household from all evil and redeem us this month, as you promised us, “Behold I have redeemed you [in later times as in earlier times to be for you Elohim]”,[3] Shabbat Musaf, Ḳedushah — Shema Yisrael speedily in our days. Amen. |
To the best of my ability, this is a faithful transcription of the תְּחִנָה לְשַׁבָּת מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חוֺדֶשׁ נִיסָן (“Tkhine for Shabbat Mevorkhim Rosh Ḥodesh Nisan”) which appeared in תחנות מקרא קודש (Teḥinot Miqra Ḳodesh, Widow and Brothers Romm, Vilna 1877) before its adaptation in Shas Tkhine Ḥadashe (Ben-Tsiyon Alfes 1910), the source from which this translation was made. English translation adapted slightly from Techinas: A Voice from the Heart “As Only A Woman Can Pray” by Rivka Zakutinsky (Aura Press, 1992). –A.N. Varady
