So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom. (Psalms 90:12) |
Herr des Lebens, der du ordnest der Zeiten Lauf und Gang, du hast sie eingetheilt in kleine und große Abschnitte, in Jahre, Monate und Tage. Durch den Wechsel dieser Perioden werden wir inne, wie im raschen Flug die Zeit unaufhaltsam dahinrauscht, und uns mit jedem Flügelschlage dem Endziele alles irdischen Seins, der Ewigkeit näher bringt, und wie sie, die flüchtige Zeit, ist sie einmal dahingezogen, niemals wieder zurückkehrt, und all unser Wünschen und Sehnen nach ihrer Wiederkehr ein vergebliches ist. Drum sollen wir sie nützen, so lange sie unser ist, keinen Punkt von ihr vergeuden, keine Stunde verlieren in müßigem Tändeln und Träumen, in eitlem, unnützem Thun und Treiben; denn einst wirst du uns, o Herr, für jeden Augenblick unseres Lebens zur Rechenschaft ziehen! – Wir müssen die That vollbringen, so lange die Zeit sie uns darbeut, wenn wir erst viel bedenken und zögern, so führt sie uns der Zeitenstrom davon, und uns bleibt nur das leere Nachsehen und Bedauern. Lord of life, who regulatest the course of time,—Thou hast divided it into great and small periods, into years, months, and days. This change of periods teaches us, how time rusheth hence in swift, uninterrupted flight and, with every onward movement, carries us nearer unto the end of all earthly existence, unto eternity; and that fleeting time, when once passed away, will never come back, despite all our wishes and ardent desires for its return. Therefore, we should employ it as long as we may yet call it ours, not waste even the least tittle thereof, lose no hour by idle sports or trifling, by useless deed and practice: for Thou, O Lord! wilt, on some future day, call us to account for every moment of our life! |

O All-good Father, who hast thus far guided and shielded me, continue to grant Thy gracious protection unto me and mine; may the coming month be unto me a month of peace and joy,—preserve our health and lives, soften and lighten our grief,—increase our pleasure in life,—bless the works of our hands and our industry, and vouchsafe unto us, from the fullness of Thy grace, all that of which we may stand in need, and which may be beneficial to us — Amen. |
This is the prayer for Rosh Ḥodesh (the day of the New Moon, and first day of the month in the Jewish calendar) included by Fanny Schmiedl Neuda in her collection of teḥinot in vernacular German, Stunden der Andacht (1855). Fanny Neuda likely either composed or translated this teḥinah into German (from Yiddish) while performing in the capacity of firzogerin (precentress) of the weibershul (women’s gallery) in her husband’s synagogue in Loštice, Bohemia. The adaptation in English was made by Moritz Mayer in his abridged translation of Neuda’s collection, Hours of Devotion (1866).
Transcription of Stunden der Andacht (second edition, 1858) was begun by Aharon Varady and and proofreading completed on German Wikisource.
