Gebet einer Braut vor der Trauung.
Prayer of a bride before the wedding ceremony.
All-Good God, infinite source of blessing! While the tumultuous, festive noise surrounds me, my anxious heart longs for a quiet devotion, for an outpouring of the heart, before you, All-Good One, guide of human destiny. For the most important step of my life I want to implore your assistance; only through you can every project succeed, our steps are pre-measured by you, you show us the paths that lead to happiness.
Father in heaven! My future lies dark before me, new duties, unknown circumstances await me. From the circle of my beloved ones, where I lived so harmlessly, where the few good things I practiced were lovingly received, and my mistakes were forgiven with loving tenderness, today I step into a new circle and take on new duties that are difficult to fulfill. As my duties increase, so my actions find a stricter judge than in my (former) house.
The love of parents and brothers and sisters is founded in the most sacred feelings; the love of the husband we are to acquire and maintain by our conduct; therefore, Father in heaven! hear my fervent supplication in this solemn hour, decisive for the happiness of my life! Grant me strength to fulfill these new duties faithfully; let me succeed in retaining my husband’s love through gentleness, a pleasing manner, and the faithful performance of my domestic duties, so that he may always remain devoted to me with the feelings with which he now awaits me under the nuptial sky. Protect me from that sullen nature, from a capricious behavior, by which one so easily turns away the love of men.
You, Lord, instituted the marriage state with the words: “I will create a helpmeet for a man, and she will be around him” (Genesis 2:18). Let me always be the helpmate of my spouse in all the circumstances of life. Give me strength to bear the inconveniences of my new state and to live always in such a way as to retain the esteem of my husband and his. “Vain is grace, deceitful is beauty; a godly woman is praised” (Proverbs 31:30). In the fear of God let me walk, O God, and I will not depart a hand’s breadth from my duty.
Amen.
Bless our all-wise, all-good covenant, which you have made, so that my soul may thank you for and for the kind guidance of my destiny. Oh, that I may always remember this day with a happy heart, and that my beloved relatives may never regret having tied my life’s happiness to the fate of this my husband, may they have found in him a son, a loving, faithful relative! — Lord, bless my exit from my (former) house, and my entrance into the house which I am now to adorn and make happy by my little qualities. Your blessings upon us all. Amen.
